wow, great work with the pix, Viros! we appreciate your words, as well. we sure enjoyed your company, as well as everyone else's, this weekend. the house is eerily quiet tonight (except for the Boston CD spinnin' in the garage...), and we miss the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm that all of you great folks brought to our little corner of paradise for the last three days.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!! :)

from Saturday's pre-game show:
-----------------------------------------
Oktoberfast
October 11-13, 2003
Ferrisville, California USA

Welcome Hooligans to the first annual (hopefully…) Oktoberfast! WOO frikkin’ HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’d like to thank Eric Barrows, aka EBear, for spearheading this little soirée here in the beautiful southern Sierra. I came up with the name (hold the applause, please), but the ride is all EBear’s idea, and he and his friend Cheryl have put a lot of effort into making this a reality.

And I’d like to thank all of you for being here this weekend. It means a lot to have you here as our guests at the fabulous yet intimate and oh-so-casual ThunderDome, and I hope this weekend is full of good rides, good times, and good friendship for us all.

Lastly, I’d like to thank my friend Denise, for putting up with all my shit. How she does it is beyond me, but I am NOT asking any questions!

Today’s ride will come in at about 200 miles, and will have us on some bitchin’ sportbike roads, in some of God’s Own Country. Shortly we’ll be riding at over 7,000 feet of elevation on a road that was originally plotted for last year’s All-Cal BRAG Rally but was snowed out the night before, and we’ll stop for a moment or two to get up close and personal with the largest living things on the planet (besides EBear, that is…), the giant Sequoias.

The route that we’re doing today, as well as for tomorrow’s and Monday’s rides if you’re lucky enough to be able to hang that long, has been chosen for several reasons, and should be unforgettable regardless whether you like to ride at a brisk pace or prefer, instead, to ride at a more leisurely “sightseeing” pace. There are plenty of photo opportunities along the way, each day, and you are encouraged to ride in a manner that allows you to see and sense all that this great country of ours has to offer.

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now then, the heavy stuff.

Oktoberfast is NOT a race, timed event, or competition, in spite of the name of this intimate little gathering of friends. The name was chosen because it’s “catchy”, nothing more, nothing less, and in no way, shape, or form should it be construed as anything more than that. Oktoberfast is, at its core, a motorcycle tour.

You are expected to ride safely and legally, and within your individual limits, at all times. There is no onus to ride at, or anywhere near, the limit of your particular abilities, and no one will think any less of you if you choose to ride at a pace that could be considered “slow” by dickwad’s lame-assed definition. That’s a promise from me.

We will wait and “collect the troops” whenever necessary, especially at any turns or forks which take us in a new direction, so there is no need for anyone to ride faster than their normal comfort level in order to "keep up". We will NOT lose you. We WILL wait for you. You do NOT have to "keep up".

If for some reason you DO become inexorably separated, you’ll have detailed route sheets and maps in your possession, along with some contact phone numbers, which we’ll be handing out in a moment.

We are all adults here, and it is expected that you will all ride so as to protect YOUR safety, as well as the safety of your fellow riders, as well as the safety of the general public.

Passing vehicles, especially, should be done in a safe and courteous manner. If you’re passing another motorcycle, PLEASE be sure they know you’re there before you go by them, and give them plenty of room. Nobody likes to be startled, especially a fellow rider.

No passing on the right, please, and no passing in corners.

You owe it to the folks on the road to keep tabs of what’s going on behind you. Check your mirrors often. If you’re holding someone up, it’s no big deal. Simply ease to the right of your lane and casually motion them by with your left hand. This lets them know that YOU know that they’re there, and lets them know they’ve got your “permission” to go by. So simple and easy even a child could do it.

I could go on and on (No, Ferris, no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), but you get the idea.

Ride to lean. Ride to live. Ride to laugh. Any effin’ questions? :)

Now then, the REAL heavy stuff.

This past weekend, at the BRAG Southwest Torque Fest in Arizona, there were two serious motorcycle crashes, one of which claimed the life of a fellow rider. From the accounts it appears that the first crash, on Friday, was alcohol-related. Impaired senses and excessive speed put this individual in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries, and several innocents were placed in mortal danger through no fault of their own.

The fatal crash on Saturday, according to the accounts, happened to an individual who was consistently riding at a pace that was troubling to his peers, and he paid the ultimate price. In the process he took out another rider, who fortunately was able to walk away from the crash, and left behind a grieving girlfriend and three heartbroken children.

As I’ve followed the posts on the internet this week regarding this tragedy, I have pondered at length what to say to you this morning. I love this sport and the people involved. I ask all of you to consider your safety, and the safety of those around you, as you ride this weekend. This stuff should be fun, not tragic.

With due respect to the fact that we’re all adults, I am asking several favors of you this morning.

First, I ask that you not pass me during any of the formal, “organized” riding that we do this weekend. This is for your safety. I know the roads we’ll be riding, and I will set a pace that hopefully everyone will enjoy.

Second, I ask that you consume no alcohol or illegal drugs during any of the riding that we do this weekend. There will be beer aplenty each day when we get back here to the ‘Dome, but I cannot, in good conscience, allow the consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs while we’re riding. There is too much at stake.

I’ve done this stuff since 1996, and have never before implemented rules like these. I hope you understand why I must now. If you don't understand, that’s okay. But if you don’t agree, you can’t ride with us.

Now then, the legal crap.

By signing your name and dating below, you:

1) Agree to agree to the “No Passing Ferris” and “No Drugs or Alcohol When We’re Riding” rules as stated previously.
2) Agree to ride legally, safely, and within your limits at all times.
3) Acknowledge that you’re an adult and aware of the inherent dangers and risks that we face as motorcycle riders, and acknowledge and accept that these risks will be present during Oktoberfast.

And…

4) You agree to hold harmless everybody involved in putting this shindig together -- whether that somebody is private, corporate, or otherwise -- for anything that may happen this weekend that might cause you pain, anguish, suffering, loss of income, hangover, or hemorrhoids.

Cool?

“Right on, Ferris, I agree!”

JB2, thanks for the kind words. you're one of the few people that i'd ride clear to across the country just to hang with for a couple of days, especially on a reluctant X1.

can't wait to hang with you a couple of more days (or weeks...)

had this been an ACTUAL emergency, you would have been directed to your nearest ThunderDome for further instructions (something along the lines of "Lean, twist, smile, repeat" ).

we now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Why not just have a NovemberFrost then? Followed by a DecemberFreeze where everyone must ride to the edge of the snow line. I can see this becoming a monthly event. Next thing you know you'll have your own Rider's Ranch sort of thing going down there.
Just a thought or two.

You may not like the results if I do. I've been known to ride 30 miles into Milwaukee without thermal underwear and without heated riding gear in sub_10°f weather just because the roads were clear of salt. And if you'll excuse the rudeness of this I had to stand in front of a grocery store bathroom handdrier for a few minutes with various portions of clothing opened just to enable myself to relieve myself.

But, okay, if November has a snowless saltless reasonably decent ridable day I'll see what I can come up with. With my schedule it might have to wait until December though. Maybe I'll just make it a Polar Bear ride and we can all ride down to the waterfront and watch the fools jump into Lake Michigan on January 1st instead.

wow Forger, at first i thought you said "choke" his chicken...

that's a pretty bitchin' panorama, my friend. i still think your idea of setting up a loudspeaker system, so i can make pronouncements to my minions, is an excellent idea. (Hey! You with the frikkin' barking dog!! Shut it the heck up or we're dumpin' hot oil on ya!!!)

oh, and we could also set up some sort of catapult deal. and a moat. hmmmm, i smell winter projects...

Mike, cool idea :)

CJ XB, thanks! imagine sitting out there at dusk, chicken on the BBQ, campfire all ablaze, with a dozen or so like-minded Hooligans hangin' around, swappin' lies and slammin' the brews, while a full moon slowly emerges above the mountains to the east.

dammit, i really DO miss Oktoberfast.

All I can say is that I've been reading about Octoberfast for a few weeks. I'm glad it's over - 'cause now I don't have to feel bad about giving it up. Instead, I now have to feel bad about missing it.

I'm glad it was such a good time for all involved. I'm probably gonna be out of action for a few more weeks as I try DESPERATELY to resist every normal impulse I have and be an adult for a bit.

Well, I suppose there is that one of Ferris airing up his patched rear (so to speak) with a bicycle pump. But if I post that one I probably won't even get invited for 2004. Hmmm....

FMJ, Yeah it's true. Gonna do a trip sometime next Summer. No dates yet. I want to avoid crowds, events and groups in hopes of putting together about three weeks of twisted roads in the company of some close west coast friends. Ferris has volunteered to be my guide for some of the trip. Your address is on my target list. Now When I have a date I'll ping you off board to see when we might hook up.

Now that I've seen all the pics from Octoberfast I might want to substitute FB for D. :)

Scott,

Try reading the posting "Advanced Image Editing/Thumbnail Techniques" located in the "Cool Buell Pics" menu. Basically, ya gotta compress your jpeg file to under 50KB before BadWeb will accept it. The posting will explain.

Good luck cuz we all want to see those bad boy pictures.
