hey EBear, sounds like fun, me 'n Denise will be there!

Dr. Steve will be gracing us with his presence, and spoke with Dino the other night and it looks like he 'n Pebbles may be showin' up on their new Beemster.

are you 'n Sparky comin' up ahead of time for some recon work?

sorry so quiet from my end lately, y'all, but a career change, the Big D, and moving are consuming mass quantities.

so, who wants to spend a three-day weekend terrorizing Ferrisville???

FB1, Id love to come but I can't.

If it's any consolation I was at the Gap this weekend. On one run back I was behind an old guy on an RGS1100 sporting Givis. Me'n the Viffer was sniffin' his tread while he threw the big dual sport out of one turn into the next. After nearly scraping the bags several times he finally relented and waved me past. I caught him walking across the parking lot at the bottom of the mountain, we grinned at each other, slapped each other on the back and without saying a word knew what each other was thinking. That was a great ride!

Stick a thought of me in your tank bag and I'll be there in spirit.

Yesterday I took the new Beemer up the mighty one-ninety to make sure that CalTrans had it in proper condition for OctoberFast. It's just been chip sealed (miles and miles of it) and the surface is grippy with just enough remaining loose gravel to be annoying. When I got home I had to epoxy the sole of my boot, at the toe, back on. Ferris will tell you that for me to catch a toe in a corner the asphalt must REALLY grippy.

Concerned that I may have missed some nuance of the road's condition yesterday, I took the Katana up today after work to try out the new Michelin Pilot Roads (nice). Yep, the road is still grippy...but I do hate the sound of stray gravel being thrown against the fairing.

Hope to see y'all soon. In the meantime I'll just keep wearing my fingers to the bone keeping track of the local road conditions.

Later,
Dino

JB2, it's truly great to see your name on here, Brother. i still grin when i think of your cell phone call during AfterGlow whilst i was sitting lakeside in Lassen Nat'l Park watching the sun come up.

great story from the Gap! i had a similar moment during FourPlay this year. Our little formation was getting ready to assault the last gnarly section of the Redwoods on 101 just before you get into Crescent City in northern California, but we were nervous that the two Beemers we'd just passed at a roadside cafe were CHP (Josh and Ponch, perhaps?), so's we were being gentle on the gas and mindful of the double-yellow, and it was seriously crampin' our style.

needn't have worried, it turns out, as it turns out they were just two like-minded Hooligans who happened to be riding Highway Patrol look-alikes, and the one dude whooshes by our fleet (my Viffer, a buncha Buells, Vik's 954, Greg's SV, etc.) like he's gonna show US a thing or two.

this was just when this road gets particularly convuluted, dodging a forest of Redwood trees as big as houses, and i gotta give this guy and his mondo BMW credit as he was layin' down sparks and hangin' off like his last name was Mladin.

i absolutely GLUED myself to his six o'clock, with the rest of my partners in crime tucked into the huge low-pressure zone we were creating, and we literally ripped this chunk of road a new backside, pretty much ignoring (and breaking) every traffic law ever created.

it was high-adrenaline adventure, all four or five minutes of it, every nerve ending at full erect, with not a neuron of brain matter devoted to anything other than the task at hand. we may have been illegal, but everyone in the group was professional, and fast, and definitely on the gas.

as we finally slowed and motored down the long, straight grade into the south side of Crescent City, i eased up on the the Road Panzer's right side and extended a gloved hand in salute of the hoot we'd just had. his hand met mine and we grinned giant grins at each other out our helmets, laughing out loud at ourselves and the world.

it was a moment i'll not forget, and one my favorite highlights on an entirely unforgettable 3700-mile odyssey.

like i said, Bro, good to hear your words. hope all is well in your world. i think of you often.

your friend,

Here is the List of local Motels in case there is an overload of attendeesThe First one is crawling distance from Ferris's but I've found out there is a Hot Rod convention that weekend so they are filling fast.If you are coming to stay at Ferris's bring a Sleeping bag if you can. There also is room to park about 20 bikes in his Garage so they WILL be safe and clean overnight!

Barewood Inn.....760-376-1910.....Laurie
Kernville Inn.....760-376-2206
Pinecone Inn.....760-376-6669.....Donna
Mountainlake Motel.....760-376-2307.....Rusty
Sierra Vista.....760-376-2250

I've reserved 2 rooms at the Pinecone and am on
the waiting list at the Barewood.I also know the
Mountainlake has at least 10 rooms still availiable. These are basically for overflow guest use since I plan on bringing my air mattress and hopefully sleep out on the deck with the 'Starview'YYAAAHHOOO!!

EBear and Cheryl, it was great having you guys up here this weekend to help with recon for OktoberFAST. me 'n D still can't believe how much beer YOU guys drank on Saturday night!!!

to all: the weather should be great for this gig, as the daytime temps are finally starting to abate somewhat. the Aspen trees up on the Western Divide are really starting to glow, and the air up there amongst the giant Sequoias is pretty intoxicating this time of year.

the Western Divide Highway and the Mighty 190 are two of the roads that we couldn't do on day three of the All-Cal BRAG ride last year due to the snowstorm that blew thru the night before. for anyone wanting to see and ride what we missed, this would be a great opportunity.

we game for having company here at the 'Dome anytime from Friday afternoon on, clear thru 'til Monday evening (it's a holiday weekend...)

the "main" ride will be on Saturday (about 200 miles) but we'll get in get in some tasty local stuff on the other days, as well.

y'all come.

EBear it was great to hear from you the other day.I am looking forward to riding with you,Ferris and Dr. Steve.
I sure hope Dr. Steve installs his new Harley Davidson Buell chome anchor before he shows up.
So we have some chance of keeping up the good Doc.
Ferris and Denise, I am glad you decided to have Octoberfast. It should be a Blast. Speaking about Blast,I think I am going to be able to get Arlene to ride up on her bike. I just purchase a 12R. This 12R is the Da S--T. I am having so much fun on this bike it's unreal.

Don, i think REGARDLESS of what the Doc hangs on his 'Bolt we stand damn little chance of even staying in the same zip code!

glad to hear you're comin' up for this, and i sure hope that Arlene rides up, too -- she will be made to feel very welcome and comfortable, both here at the 'Dome and up in the twisties.

a new 12, eh? you BASTARD!!!!!!!!!!!! i kinda new you'd be the first on the block to own one. damn, Don, i could barely hang with you BEFORE, now i don't stand ANY chance!!!!!!!!!!!!

so, in addition to Arlene's new personalized license plate "RLEAN", i think you should get one that reads "DA S--T" !

see you's soon,

OK Folks here are the directions I was promising to OKTOBERFAST...IE ..Ferris's and Denise's...

COMING FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

North on the 5 Freeway , over the Grapevine take the 99 towards Bakersfield.
Just before entering downtown Bakersfield get off on the 58 towards Tehachapi(east).
Follow this about 7 miles till you see the sign for the 'WeedPatch' Highway (Hwy 184).
Get off and go left under the bridge.
After about 3 miles you'll see the Racetrack and just past this you'll come to a TEE in the road. This is the 178 to lake Isabella.
Continue up this Incredible twisty along the river road about 35 or so miles to the town of Lake Isabella and you'll see signs that say Wofford Heights or Kernville ..Highway 155...go left here , you'll be running along the western flank of the lake.
In about 7 miles you'll come down a hill into Wofford Heights (small town)Keep looking on your left untill you see the BAREWOOD INN Hotel.
About 50 feet past it(on the same side)on the left is a road called Bristlecone road.Head up this road , it is two lanes. This will narrow down to one lane and right away you'll see a 'FOR SALE' sign on the right that says 'Sale Pending'
turn left across from sign and your there!! If you arrive after 5:00 on Friday there will be an orange construction cone both at Bristlecone on the 155 and where you turn up his Driveway. This is a tight turn and a semi-steep dirt driveway so take it easy.As in all first times these directions might sound difficult but its actually easy to find and well worth it once you arrive!
See ya'll there!!

As a Synopsis.......
North on 5
North on 99
East on 58
North on 184
NorthEast on 178
North on 155
West on Bristlecone
South on their driveway.

For those coming from the NORTH.............Going down to the 58 is an option but if you catch the 204 south out of OILDALE (north of Bakersfield)this crosses the 178 in 3 miles and just head East....

Now if you've got the time take the 155 just south of DELANO and after about 60 miles of Twisties turn left when you see the Lake and in a short distance you'll see the BareWood Inn.

Coming out of the Desert...................... head up the 58 from MOJAVE and turn Right at the 184 and then Right at the 178...(just past the Racetrack.

the "For Sale" sign (and cone :-) will be on your left as you come up Bristlecone, and you'll indeed turn hard left into the driveway thus marked.

WATCH FOR DOWNHILL TRAFFIC coming around the corner when Bristlecone suddenly narrows down nearly to nothing -- there are plenty of drivers around here who can't.

the first ones here get the best beer.

OktoberFAST...

our place is open to company anytime after noon this Friday. the beer starts when you get here (if you're thru riding for the day), and the new BBQ starts heating up about 5:30.

Saturday morning we launch at 0800, with breakfast at the Ponderosa (believe it or not, Hop Sing still works there...), 7200-feet high in the Sierras at about 10 ayem.

if you can't make Saturday's ride (it'll come in at about 225 miles, with approximately 4 gazillion corners), you're still welcome to live here Saturday night with us. the beer will still be flowing (i.y.t.r.f.t.d.) and the BBQ will be in full-honk.

Sunday's ride will be shorter, sorta, not really, on several of the roads that served as worthy backups for last year's partially snowed-out All-Cal BRAG route. for those of you needing to get back to the L.A. area on Sunday, the ride will end up with you pointed in the right direction and closer to home than when you started the day.

and for those who can hang another night (geez, get an effin' life), the back half of Sunday will have us back up in the Sierras on yet more of The Good Stuff, including a stint on the Lion's Trail, with (you guessed it) the BeerBQ awaiting back home (i.y.t.r....well, you get the idea.)

altho not etched yet in stone, i think Monday will find who ever is left pointed north again, maybe via California Hot Springs, so that i can get dr. Steve aimed in the right direction. who knows, might even make Sequioa and Kings Canyon on Monday...

it's really easy to say, when one is banging a ride drum like this, that it's all gonna be unforgettable.

well who knows, maybe it WILL be.

for anyone who might be runnin' late on Saturday, here's the first leg of the ride, to give you a decent chance of joining up with us.

i hesitate a little bit to post this, out of fear that if you ARE playin' catch up you'll ride in an unsafe manner doing do. please don't. it ain't worth it.

we're lauching from Wofford Heights, on the shimmering shores of Isabella Lake, at 0800, and hoping to hit Ponderosa for breakfast at about 1000. we should be in Springville (gas and good cell phone coverage) about 1130 or noon.

if you haven't acquired us by then, stop trying, and meet us back at Wofford Heights. Denise will be home all day, with phones close at hand. if something comes up, leave a message on my cell and EBear's cell (we'll be checking for messages when we can), AND call Denise and let her know what's up.

Hello Ferris and Denise,

Donald and I just got back from Octoberfast. We wanted to drop you two a note to say, "Thankyou". Thanks for the great hospitality, Denise you are an awsome host. You made us feel so welcome, and comfortable. You two own a piece of paradise. We are thankful you invited us to share it. Your home is the perfect setting for unwinding. We also want to thank E-Bear. Thankyou E-Bear for transporting the Blast. You were a God send, and thanks for following behind Donald and my slow ass. We really appreciate you doing that. We had such a great time with all who were there. Everyone was so nice and caring and considerate. We are looking forward to doing it again.

OktoberFAST was a hoot! The roads were awesome, The weather was perfect, and the scenery was unbelieveable. I'm going to have to go back up and impose on Ferris and Denise another time to ride those roads again! Meeting all you guys was great, I hope that we can ride together again.

I think I suprised a lot of people about the performance of the Blast, and really enjoyed the trip!

James

PS Ferris, Thank Denise for the great hospitality.

Ferris/Denise,

All I can say is .... THANKS!!!
Kudos to Ebear also.

Doing the Western Divide loop totally rocked. Saturday's ride definitely made for one of the best days I have had this year.
To celebrate, I am running out today to buy the Boston CD.
