The new Yankee Stadium . . I'm driving by one day and see something so unsafe it catches my eye, I stop to shoot pictures and send them to my staff telling them "this is an accident waiting to happen". The next week the guy drives the Bobcat loader off the roof and dies. Condo rehab in East Harlem. . . I tell my folks . . "anyone ever tells you that you "have to" work on a scaffold like that, tell them to go to hell and get a new job". Three days later, the scaffold collapses. By now my site guy tells me "if you ever tell me my tires look bad I'm walking home". So we're doing the demo of the old "Tuck-it-Away" storage warehouse and our guys are playing by the rules. I tell them . . . theres a perfect example of how NOT to perform demo work. Yep . . building collapsed about 10 minutes ago. Film at 11:00. Please work safely. As I was walking from class to get my camera from the car I spied all these folks with little earpieces. They didn't think I noticed but they were "locked on" me as I walked by with a camera about size of tomorrow. As I was walking up the steps to a high vantage point I thought back on my own two years with The White House (1983-1985) and thought "I'd never let that guy get more than 2' from me. As I turned to set the camera on the wall . . sure enough, less than 18" behind me was an agent. . "that's quite a camera". . "who's your principle?" I asked. . "The President of the Dominican Republic". I handed him my business card. . student ID and told him everywhere I intended to stand and shoot photos . . .he was cool with that. Butler Library is incredible. This is where I spend some (most is in Avery) of my time writing. The cool thing about Butler is the red,yellow, green zones and the sound isolated writing chambers . . what other Ivy League school serves you fair trade coffee and peanut butter cookies while you study? This is always open as I leave class. . . it's incredibly impressive. Looking in the side door (look closely at that door) into the Chapel I love the shapes in this picture A long shot looking at Butler Library Low Library is the photo most often associated with Columbia. It's no longer used as a library and houses executive offices and the most amazing public space and visitors area. . . .it is incredible inside. Columbia was producing scholars a loooooong time ago, eh? Shot hanging out the window, upside down, across from the World Trade Center The last 1/4 mile to the house. .. The study rooms in Butler, with each new one I encounter, are incredible. I am headed there now to complete the RS/RSS Chapter. I'd posted the pic of Meredith and I dancing to Chicago playing "Saturday in the Park" a while back . . .she is a genuinely nice person and proof that folks my age (she's exactly the same age I am) don't all *look* old . . .very cool stuff. They started lining up on the Plaza at 3:00AM this morning for Springsteen. They are expecting the biggest crowd ever . . since Ricky Martin overflowed Rock Center. These are from the drive home from School last night . . . Classmates bike I nearly took out parallel parking! Gorgeous Bike Monster "look" is timeless and this clutch is "art" The Manhattan Bridge - from the North The Manhattan Bridge - from the South Downtown - The city that never sleeps! I cranked the speed up and shot this out the window. Sparky   Court Posted on Wednesday, October 03, 2007 - 09:10 am:        Some of the best shots are straight out of the window after class. . . my late night drive, twice a week, takes me through the heart of Harlem, Central Park, from North to South Manhattan and through Brooklyn Heights. I lost, with the recent crash of my hard drive, two of the projects I was working on . . . an exhibit of "The Doors of Brooklyn" and "Laundromats". . . Sometime, when time permits, I shall some highlights from the current project on architecture. These area a couple of last nights "out the window specials". The FDR Ramp to the Brooklyn Bridge - Looking at Downtown Manhattan. . . it's a great city to be in the Electrical Construction business. These little parks are all over Brooklyn every couple of blocks - Manhattan has a lot of "private neighborhood parks" where the folks surrounding the parks are given keys. If you'll remind me I'll post some pictures of some of the "artsy" ones the neighbors have decorated. Basically the same shot as the first one, taken on the ramp, from the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge . . I liked the way the clouds worked, lit up by the city lights You never really get tired of looking at this thing. I'm sad to say that with the loss of the hard drive went my photos of Livi, the model, I recently shot out on the bridge and at city hall. I drive by this little hair salon every night . . there's just something about the glow in the neighborhood. . the fact that it is the sole business on a residential block of $3-4M homes, the plants and the soft lighting . . anyway . . I'll keep taking photos of it I suppose. I was in fine form trying to navigate whilst plying my parallel parking (don't let them fool you, it's easier from the sidewalk side than the street side) and in the middle of watching the fancy Duc, I hear a resounding two-man chorus of STOP . . . following by something akin to the cymbal crash Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 (generically known to Texicans as "Romeo and Juliet") . . . as the rear of the truck gracefully moved the Toyota into the position, in my opinion, it should have been in the first place. It took me years to develop these skills and I will be proud to have conferred upon me the first Ivy League advanced degree in remedial driving! Second place gets to sit and wait until the first one is moored before they can enter the port. There is a lot of money involved in a race between cargo ships. Bonuses for early delivery not withstanding. I even recall a couple of similar drag races with ship when I was in the Navy. Who wants to sit outside port and wait while another ship load of sailors is going on liberty? Being in the engine room with the ship's real throttles I remember getting some unusual bells rung up (the bridge's orders on how fast they want the props to turn) as early as the night before we pulled into port to try to get in before the other ships in the battle group.   Court Posted on Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 10:30 pm:        Well . . . a couple more from throughout my day. . . . . . could just be me but I dig a day that involves watching the leaves change on the golf course acccross the street. . the ships going by down the street. . . models scurrying from the agency in the rain and the sun breaking through the clouds on 100+ year old buildings. . . great day to be a construction worker.
