Jim, after my riding 400 miles today on my Lightning, my butt was about ready to fall off (WAY past numb). How's the seat comfort and also wind protection? What kind of average speed are you running?

Your "epic ride" has me thinking twice about the Uly as my next replacement, after ruling it out previously.

Jim, Google says it's about a push mileage-wise from Shoshone to Vegas going thru Pahrump or Tecopa HS/Old Spanish Trail.

i've ridden both, and it doesn't seem possible, but looking at the Google map i guess they could be right.

i'd post their map of that section but i can't figure out how to do so, so here's a link to the map if you're interested:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&tim e=&date=&ttype=&saddr=shoshone+ca&daddr=35.975783, -115.973053+to:las+vegas+nv&mra=dpe&mrcr=0,1&mrsp= 1&sz=10&sll=35.986896,-115.993652&sspn=0.507814,0. 925598&ie=UTF8&ll=36.026889,-115.944214&spn=0.5075 57,0.925598&z=10&om=1

taking 178/372 from Shoshone to Pahrump would be MUCH easier to navigate...

I've generally found that when it's easier to sleep during the day than it is at night then that's your body's way of telling you to take a day or two of rest. You did good by staying an extra day.

(and I think ol "Ferris" is trying to get you in trouble by re-enacting that pic. I suspect Ferris and Court are two people who could talk their way out of a bank robbery and get a free coffee cup in the process.)

It would be interesting, though, if you could duplicate that pic....

Toona - I'm running about 80, beyond that I'm skeered of the law. I don't have a lot of other bikes to compare the Uly comfort to. People do praise the Uly seat comfort, so it's probably pretty good. Probably more than the seat, the Uly is a tall bike, so your knees aren't as bent during the ride. My legs start to hurt after a while, and I find I can dangle them and they don't drag pavement (though I can't point my toes down.) That helps with distance. Still, after 800 miles my butt hurts. I've never owned a faired bike, so I don't know what it's like to have wind protection. : )

One thing I've found is that getting off the bike when you're starting to hurt and hanging out at a gas station for 20 minutes can make a big difference in how you feel, physically and emotionally, when you get back on. If you read my post on going through Kansas, I stopped half way through the state and called a few people. It made the ride through the rest of the state a lot more enjoyable even though I "wasted" half an hour.

Also, for whatever reason, these long distance runs seem to get easier with practice. My first was to Daytona in 2006. I think that was about 600 miles and it seemed like a big deal. Later that summer I got in the occasional habit of doing day runs to Deals Gap. Thats 750 miles. Then I did homecoming last July, and did a 940 coming back. One reason I did that was to see if it was feasible to do a cross country trip. Now I know I can do a 940 mile day. At the same time, you'll notice I didn't schedule any. I suspect my trip from Seattle to Mtnview was close to that. I was only supposed to be 800 something, but I managed to get lost a few times.

Anyone else notice a problem with the sign at Badwater Basin?

Like maybe they reversed the numbers for meters and feet?

Last time I looked 282 ft equals about 93 meters (give or take) But 282 meters does equal
about 855 ft.

I know, picky, picky, picky!

Yea, I noticed that too. I was wondering if there is a decimal point as in 85.5 M.

Jim - Are you planning on riding into the Sequoia National Forest. Looking at Jerry's map, I see its in the neighborhood. Well at least closer than here. Watch out of fatigue, you were smart to rest today. Anyway!!

Whoa!!! Sorry been away from the internet most of the day. Thanks for the PM Jerry!
And why do we remember there's premium at Furnace Creek and not Stovepipe Jerry?
PM me or call me Jim if you come through Bakersfield and want to meet up.
First rainy day of the season today and quite a change from the clear, high eighties of a few days ago.
Too bad you have to make time as there are some great roads with a view here that you'd love. But the canyon road (178) up to the lake and over the pass to the desert is almost as nice and the most direct from here. Good road and plenty of signage. You know Mt Whitney is just a short ways up 395? Whitney Portal has great hamburgers and a better view. Jerry dragged me from highest to lowest US points a couple of times.
Pretty sure it's supposed to be 282 ft and 85 point 5 meters Diablo!

Well the day didn't start the best! I told Jim to take the Buttonwillow exit and head east on 58/178. Well dumb me I forgot that riding down from the north on I5 there's a frontage road that starts out at Lost Hills and that offramp has a Buttonwillow sign. Twenty miles before Buttonwillow! I don't get out that way much but next time I do I need to burn that stupid sign! Anyway because of that Jim got to see a little bit of Central Valley Americana in the form of the towns of Wasco and Shafter before we could meet up. Jim, Kim, Kim's daughter Lona and I had a early lunch at Tina Marie's and then I rode with Jim up Kern Canyon and over Walker Pass as far as Ridgecrest. He's going to try to make it to Vegas tonite which will make for another long day. Great guy, I enjoyed meeting and riding with him. I kinda had this urge to keep going... going... but alas it was time to turn around.

Thanks for taking care of him, Unibear. He's having such a great time meeting so many badwebbers.

Just talked to The Boy. (start Elvis accent) He's in Vegas, baby. (end Elvis accent)

I'm happy to report that, contrary to its name, he did not die in Death Valley. He did say he could see that it as an occurrence that could happen pretty easily.

He sounds good and I suspect we may get a report directly from him this evening.

Kim took some pics too so I might be able to post some more later.
