Jim's in NC!!!

I'm tempted to duck out of work and head West to ride the last bit with him. I assume he's coming in on 40/85?

Glad you made it back safely Jim. I have followed you almost everyday since you left and have almost enjoyed it as much as when I was going cross country, but as you know now, I didn't have to worry about getting saddle sore. Thanks for sharing.

Jim, You Are The Man.

Hurray!

Glad to hear he's home safe and sound! It's been fun following and waiting for his calls each day.

Spike - work sucks doesn't it? Mikethebike72 had a fleeing thought about meeting you to meet Jim, then realized that work stood in his way as well.

Denise - technology is only great when it works! Glad I was home and able to help in the chain of communication. Hope your knee lets you get some rest tonight.

Can't wait for the rest of the story!

7,894 miles.

It's good to be home. I need to figure out if I can wash my riding gear or if I should just burn it. : )

Thanks to everyone who followed along, sent messages and so forth. It's flattering to know that people actually care. I'll post some more later. It's naptime now.

Congrats on making it home safe and sound Jim.

There have been a lot of us thinking about you and your trip in the past couple of weeks. I know,
I'm one of them.

Knowing you made it home safe and sound is the best part of the journey. Good job Jim!

I've been very pleased with my tires. My last set were Continental Contiforce, which I have found wear well. That tire has been superseded by the Continental Road Attack which I decided to try for this trip. I was somewhat hesitant to put on a tire I'd never tested before and take an 8,000 mile trip, but with a week of downtime in California, I assumed I could get new tires if needed.

The front practically looks brand new, you can still read "conti attack" that is molded into the rubber:

The rear shows more wear. They are flatspotted from all the interstate riding I did, but they still have tread left.

I'll definitely put another Road Attack on the bike.

Jim...thanks for the nice vicarious trip. For those who are jealous of Jim's trip, it was probably punishing as well as it was rewarding. Guess ya'll know that. Thank God your bike ran as well as you did. Looking forward to seeing some of you the 18th.

I never properly finished this ride report. Time for a belated conclusion.

There are many people I would like to thank. The Girl was great for giving me a reason to make this trip, for taking care of things while I was away, for dealing with my glasses hassle while she was on vacation, and for being understanding of my three week absence from life.

Kristi (Ulywife) graciously agreed to be the person I could call if I had problems. If you've every dealt with her, you know why I asked. It was awesome to have her help, and she always came through.

The company of those who fed, housed, rode and hung out with me during the trip was wonderful. It made the whole experience much more enjoyable.

Finally, thanks to those who followed along online. When I left I didn't know if anyone would be interested. It was quite flattering to see how many people did care. One of the highlights of my days were catching up on the posts and putting up pictures.

I enjoyed the trip. I'd do it over again. In fact I'll go so far as to say some day I will do it again. Hopefully I'll have more time then, but I'm glad I didn't wait till that nebulous point in the future when free time appears.

Several people have asked me "was it fun?" That's a difficult question to answer. It was hard. I knew it was going to be hard before I left, but I was still naive. The cold, rain, and wind in the northwest were more intense than I imagined. Also, since the schedule was tight, with predawn till after dark riding, I was constantly tired. But there is something very rewarding about doing hard things, particularly if they are things you have chosen to do.

Finally, if anyone is looking for advice about a trip like this, here is my one piece of wisdom. Always make time for the people who want to meet you along the way. They are what makes the trip worthwhile.
