I'm riding home at 10:00pm when I caught up with two other bikes. One guy is on some kind of GSXR and the other guy is definitely on a V-Strom 1000. They were taking turns revving their engines and showing off when I came up on their left. I passed in the left lane real slow and avoided eye contact cause I just wanted to go home... but these guys won't leave me alone. They start goading me into a race or something, but there's no way I'm doing that, at least not against the Gixxer. Then the Gix dude tries to wheelie, but it's a pitiful one. I start to get the idea these guys aren't so hot on their bikes.

The V-Strom dude pulls right next to me and starts revving his engine... so I look around... and then drop down a gear and clutch a wheelie up in 2nd. You know how when the front end comes up, you know right away when you got a good wheelie started? Well, this was a good one. It came right up to the balance point and I was able to stay with it until I passed the Gix and got to the next traffic light. The V-Strom hung with me for about 30 feet, but his front end came down and he sat the rest of my wheelie out (about 100 yds further).

Gixxer dude is out of the picture now - he backed way off as I wheelied by him, and now it's just me and the V-Strom. At the light, I look at V-Strom dude and shake my head - kids these days, what can you do? When the light turns green, he drapes his legs over the handlebars and tries to do a wheelie sitting on the tank. It's another pitiful one, only about 6 inches high and 10 feet long - embarassing is what it is. I point my finger at him with a 'you da man' attitude and now these guys don't want to play anymore. They sped off and pulled off into a Hooter's, of all places.

When I got home, I felt stupid but happy. It was foolish to stunt on public roads, but it felt great slapping these guys in the head (at 44 years old, I might add). I can't do the fancy fender grabs and such, but I can still hoick a decent minger when I have to.

I can barely remember what those guys or their bikes looked like, but I know one thing for sure... they remember me and they won't forget the sound of that Buell.

I hope I see them again. Maybe I should start going to that Hooter's...

Dan,
Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. Luckily no cops saw ya.
