Very pleased you're enjoying it, Lawrence. Why don't you bring one or two of those bikes down here to Calif and play in the Sierra with Jerry and me for a few days. Hey, how 'bout Oktoberfast? No, no...I was awake, but it can take years to perfect some of the more complex techniques. Hmmm, perhaps in the meantime I could take a shot of my thumb and paste it in using Photoshop! | ||

After spending all weekend doing "other stuff", I finally escaped late Sunday afternoon and took a run up Hwy 190 on the Beemer. Part of the reason for being there (as if I needed more reason than taking a run up 190 on a motorcycle) was to see if I could find any of those fantastic Yucca flowers that Ferris showed in his recent pics. Seems that I was a bit late for them at the elevations I was at, but I did get this one.  I liked the look of the younger yucca plants that were along the roadside and thought they looked kinda cool among the late blooming spring wildflowers. Here's a couple.   | ||

I thought that this rock face, adorned with yuccas and some wildflowers was interesting.  And these yellow flowers were all along the Hwy and were brilliant.  Among the late Spring flowers, there were also the remains of earlier blooming plants, picturesque in their own right.  | ||

On the ride up the mountain I noticed a series of small waterfalls I hadn't seen before. Here's the view from the Hwy.  I stopped on the ride back down the mountain and searched out the beginning of a trail that runs down the slope to the falls area. This is the type of trail where, when climbing back up, you can use your hands as well as your feet to climb. I really gotta get into better shape if I'm gonna do this kind of thing. Along the trail I found this cool image of a blooming Buckeye tree framed by a rather old and grizzled Manzanita.  Before getting all the way down to the river, I decided that I'd better head back up the mountain and get back to the Beemer before someone else did. One last shot down at the river, downstream at the top of the upper falls that you can see in the picture from the Hwy.  | ||

Yuccaless in Sequoia??? Damn near! I was wondering whether I was just too late to see 'em (you can see that the one I shot was about toast), or whether your pics were from the Kern. I've been up there before when those flower spikes were glowing all over the hillsides ... not this time! BTW, I was thinking of you and how much you'd have enjoyed the hike back up from the river. Oh, by the way, a note to any future Oktoberfasters: That view down to the river - that's what we call a run-off area for the curves on Hwy 190. Best not to use it. | ||

I have to admit that I've skewed the Porterville thread a little by always photographing excursions eastward into the foothills and the Sierra. I started thinking that I really ought to record the agricultural nature of the area on the west side of town as well. Looking out the window at a stack of hay just yesterday, I finally decided that it was time to start. So without further ado, we move from the lovely scenery of the foothills and mountains to the dusty equipment yards and fields of the valley. First the hay stack that started it all.  Here the sun sets (literally and figuratively) on a milking barn that is without doubt even older than I. A small diary these days will have a couple thousand cows. I'm guessing this one had fewer.  How to lose friends and ••••-off your neighbors...let thistles go wild on your fallowed fields.  (Message edited by dino on June 21, 2005) | ||

When I've looked thru the pics in Jerry's Isabella thread, I've noticed that we share a predilection for seeking images in old junk/stuff/equipment, whatever. Old dusty, rusty things that are just sitting around. I can't help looking for patterns and textures that make an interesting image...and there's no place better for finding dusty, rusty junk than an old farm or equipment yard. Just some little junk in these pictures - I'll have to look around for some big junk.    I couldn't find a particularly compelling image here, but this lone, windblown sunflower was making the best of it out in a mown hay field. I couldn't pass it up.  | ||

Bummer. really like the old milking barn. There were little milk barns like that all over Tulare County when I first moved here a little more than 25 years ago...already idle even then. They're rapidly disappearing. Woulda made an interesting photo essay. Seems like I had another pic of that one that I liked better, I'll have to take a look back. Dino, Awesome pics!!! Looks like your wheat fields are a few weeks ahead of the ones around here, everything is still green here. My favorite pic is the thistle patch, looks like an alien planet, way cool. And just what were those rusting spheres used for? The canyon and barn pictures are inspiring. May have to do a little local recon for the same, although I'm not sure I can compete with your photographic aptitude. | ||

How about some pictures of scenes that are actually in town. I happened to have a camera along today when I went to the post office, so I shot these scenes along the way. To steal a line from James Taylor, "Damn this traffic jam!"  One of two old, converted train stations. This one is a museum, the other is now part of a senior complex. There is a three weekend American motorcycle event at this museum, which benefits the museum. One weekend a bike show, another a "leather and lace" fashion show and the remaining weekend is a poker run. I've been to the bike show. The wife always takes me out of town on the "leather & lace" weekend.  A closer view of the old firehouse bell, for FMJ.  Hey, Ferris, the museum had junk that is even older than we are!    Just up the street is Zalud House, another museum.  | ||

"My favorite pic is the thistle patch, looks like an alien planet, way cool." Hey, Spud, how's it going? Yeah, I thought that the thistles looked pretty eerie, too. I had fun taking those shots, but spent about an hour pulling weed seeds out of my bootlaces when I was done. "And just what were those rusting spheres used for?" Fun shapes, aren't they? Those are bonnet type water meters for metering irrigation water deliveries. The "clock" is under the circular, hinged lid on the protrusion in the center of the dome. "I'm not sure I can compete with your photographic aptitude." Well, thanks, but I seem to remember some most excellent shots on your thread, bud. Like the canola field, just as one example. BTW, I really liked the shot of the Buell next to the flowering shrub. Very striking. I'll be watching for new installments. | ||

Dino, Very cools pics. The waterfalls reminded me a bit of Cunningham Falls SP WAY out in Md (for me anyway). Used to be the perfect getaway for a girlfriend and a picnic. I'd need a dirtbike to get there though...  | ||
