We stopped at the On post Guest quarters for Ferris and Gentlemen Jim (Jim A) to shower up and change, Also to speak with "The Captain". Spreadem had disappeared for a bit and returned with 4 foam coolers full of all manner of adult beverages..

Before we left the GQ we were introduced to Sgt Bill Dawty and invited over to his place for a "cookout".

What was just a little confusing was just how much food Bill had on the Grill and Kelly had carried in earlier.

it became Clear later that a bigger event was unfolding

Guns were produced and examined

We had to examine Bills Gixxer

Dear Erik I wanna 16,000 rpm tach on my new Buell next year

Then Ferris went and did it,
He took Bills' Gixer750 for a spin,
no safety equipment what so ever!
bare feet no helmet nada

Being a former Gixxer owner I had to see what had changed. Sides I had to "set a good example" too!
You know safety orange cap and some sort of shoes,
( We won't discuss Ferris having to push me back up the hill to avoid grounding Bills body work )

You should always wear head protection and never go bare foot, wear your sandals

My first day started late, so my wife could get a sunday nap after church to prepare for 4 kids and no spousal support for a few days. I was happy to let her get a jump, and appreciated being able to go on an adventure.

day1gps

I left around 3:30 pm, and only needed to make it from Lebanon (Cincinnati) to Knoxville. Back roads after dark are a bad idea, but I am less concerned about super-slabbing it. I just put a minivan a few hundred yards in front of me, and they become my "deer plow".

My route avoided interstate for the first couple hours. All I knew about the roads I plotted were that the GPS software showed they were wiggly. They turned out to be simply beautiful, only one creepy town, and it was not that bad.

Only one shot from that leg, I was trying to cover ground.

east of lexington 1485

I arrived at my cheap Knoxville hotel intact and before 11, it was old and unimpressive, but nothing smelled like pee, and they offered to let me park the bike right outside the lobby so they could keep an eye on it. Good enough for me!

It's amazing the voices in your head that try and talk you out of adventures. Fight them. Your children and wife want a man alive, not a broken or surly shell. Be responsible and meet your obligations, but be what God made you to be first. Be living out your passions, and don't live in fear.

Jumping on a motorcycle to meet a bunch of guys you only know from the internet going to a town you have never been in before heading into mountain riding alone into a rainstorm... it would be easy to make excuses on why you can't go. It's really fear speaking, you just rationalize it into pragmatic reasons for retreat.

I don't know how many perfectly valid reasons and opportunities I had to bail before I left. Getting out the door really meant something... for better or worse I was committed.

And so ended day one...

Day two started grey. I slept restlessly, but still lingered over coffee longer then I should have, and started out closer to 9 am. I should have been shooting for closer to 7, but I had plenty of time regardless. The delay cost me an extra run back and forth across the Cherohola, which is a significant loss.

And while it was grey all morning, the moment I drug all the gear out to pack onto the bike, the rain started falling. Again, the voices in my head were still there. You looser. You poser. You idiot. Standing in the rain getting ready to ride a motorcycle, while your wife is at home with 4 kids, and you have a work crises ready to explode at the office (my last estimate before I left was that 65,000 users could be impacted, by a project I championed). It would have been another easy moment to turn back.

It was actually a fairly spiritual moment when I finally left on the road. I go to a small little quirky nondenominational church outside Lebanon, and the teaching on Sunday before I left included a story encouraging us to play in the rain. The example was pointing out that we spend too much time putting ourselves in little boxes of isolation because God is too big for us, and we know we can control him. We put ourselves on leather seats in dry metal boxes behind airbags on all sides, turn on the radio before we have an honest and original thought, and set the temperature right where we want it. We think it's control, but it quickly becomes this tiny little prison.

Well there was no hiding here, very little control, and by GOD no prison. I am riding into the mountians, in the rain, on a motorcycle, with nothing but the sound of air and a pushrod 45 degree V twin to distract me. It feels powerful, it feels dangerous, and I feel free. And ironically, I probably feel more in control then I have in the last year.

It's only annoying until you get all the way soaked, then it's just a matter of riding slower and keeping bigger margins. So in many ways, its a more relaxing ride.

I only miss one turn (which you can see on the track log), and I arrive on US129, Deals Gap, the Dragon, and make the obligatory stop at the overlook.

1485

1487

1488

People are friendly on the Gap. I make 5 passes up and back, stopping at both ends each time and chatting with different people. At the overlook, I talk to a marine platoon leader, and we meander conversationally around until he is telling me what it feels like to be leading a group of marines when their Humvee hits an improvised explosive device, and he suddenly realizes it's his responsibility to deal with the situation and lead these men.

An S3 rider from Columbus talks to me back at the other end, at the gas station. I see on the news that the Crocodile Hunter was killed, and can't quite wrap my head around it. It's still raining on and off, and the roads stay completely wet.

On my first pass from the overlook down, I am almost immediately passed by some guy on a grey bike, it had F4I color schemes, but looked like a Ninja. They all look alike to me. He passes fairly quickly. I am much more interested in clean lines, good form, and adequete margins then I am in simply speed. I think that he is going about as fast as I think it would be possible to go on this road on these conditions, and wonder why he is hurrying. I make it about another mile before I see him standing off a ditch in an odd location, supporting the bike and collecting various broken signals and mirrors. Nothing serious, but it reminds me I am not just being paranoid.

(I will be buying the high res version of this photo soon, but they ship it on CD, so I have to put the proof here)

After 5 trips across the Gap in the rain, it is pushing 1 pm, and I decide I best be getting on towards Franklin to meet everyone else.

Just past the gas station at the end of the Gap, I go along the river, and the rain and heat have put a surreal fog over the river, it's beautiful and mysterious.

1489

1493

1496

1498

The roads past the gap proove to be every bit as much to handle as the gap itself, just without the spectator sport aspect of it. I have my only two "oh crap" moments of the whole trip on this day, neither particularly serious.

The first is a missed shift coming up on the place where killboy.com photographs (figures). I miss a downshift, pick up too much speed, and then accidently lock the rear for a moment on the wet ground. It took me closer to the center line then I wanted, but I don't think I ever touched it. And I don't think killboy was fast enough with the camera to get it on film, but he was *close*.

The second was on 28, and I don't remember how I found myself going too hot going towards a corner, but I was able to brake on the wet roads and basically come to a stop and line back up with plenty of asphalt left. It was headed to a fairly sheer dropoff, and there was no one anywhere to see me go off, so it would have been pretty bad. I would have just dropped off the face of the earth without a trace if I ended up injured badly enough to not be able to get myself back up that hill somehow. Again, it was sobering, and a time to think about how important it is to surround yourself with friends.

I arrived at the franklin Hotel, Ferris popping his head out to say hello as soon as he heard a Buell roll up. I immediately felt welcome, and Olddog offered to share his room with me (later refusing to take any money for it). Henrik rolls out shortly after that, as does JB2. It's awkward for about half a millisecond, and from then on feels like great times with old friends.

After cleaning up and unpacking, we walked from the Franklin Inn to Mike Breedlove's house. When we arrive, beer is already out, great home cooked food is everywhere, and everyone is friendly. It's good to be in the south. I have great conversations with people from just about every walk of life you can imagine.

1503

That is Ferris and JB2, Ferris's road king in back, Jims Victory up front. I would get used to seeing the back of those bikes during the course of the trip.

1505

Notice the equipment in the basement. When these folks schedule a party, they are NOT messing around.

1508

And the music starts...

1510

Half country music, half poetry (the good kind), and half sermon (also the good kind), everyone sits enrapt for song after song.

Except for the occasional photo...

1513

Where Ferris is obviously wondering to himself if he knows me well enough to flip me off yet.... Which since he has just given me a very nice cigar, he certianly could have, and I would not have been the least bit offended : )

1518

1526

1528

I have other pictures of everyone here, but I am not going to post them. People were lost in the music, as they should be, and the pictures can't do it justice.

The frame in the background is not a prop. You could still see the original lettering on the tank. It was probably a 1913 Harley Davidson, an amazing bit of history. Before I knew any of it's history, it was already speaking to me, of sitting outside an old garage and slowly and gracefully rusting away, after a life of adventure and exceitment stirring the souls of men. I got more of the story later, and found out that was not far from the truth.

And so ended day two.

Made it home in one piece. Had a fantastic time!!!!!

I'm beat so the short review in no particular order:

- 2300 miles
- bike burned less than a quart of oil
- only 3 minor issues with the bike: 1) rear brake light switch quit on me; 2) some overly enthusiastic throttle cable lubing shorted the right turn signal switch - thanks to Bill Reepicheep's excellent deduction we got it cleared out with compressed air. And thanks Jim Olddog for assistance 3) the choke knob slipped out of the clamp - easily fixed.
- we rode through some absolutely amazing areas; great roads, fantastic scenery. What a contrast to schlepp through Jersey and NYC at the end of the trip.
- people in the South sure are friendly and generous with their hospitality.
- I couldn't have asked for a better bunch of guys to ride with.

More, incl. pictures, later.

Hey Denise and Everyone else..

Just got off the phone with FB his own self and here's the lowdown. JB had something pop up on the home front and has headed back that way. Hope everything is going to be OK for him. Jim and Ferris are now alone on the ride. They were supposed to stop in Front Royal VA, but due to bad weather and no views, they just putted straight up without the expected rose smelling and hung a left.. They are in Romney WV now and were just getting around to a little beverage intake (of the more 'potent' kind I believe) and didn't realize that I and Jose were quite a way East of them now.

The travelers are still having a good time, however it would take us too long to hook up and they have a hope to make Grand Rapids before dark on Friday. This means waiting for us to catch up to them would force them to loose about half a day and that just wouldn't do. (Jose and I didn't want to hang them up that much)..

Ferris did say he wished Denise was along for the ride, perhaps next time?

Denise, thanks for the info and the heads up! Quick explanation as too why they couldn't use their cellulars: WV as yet doesn't have 'digital' cells. They would have to have and use analog phones. Sorry if it made contact difficult... But that's how it seems to go..

I'll check back in soon, and see what the latest update is. Just wish I'd have more to say and show.. Hopefully, we'll be able to get those miles together some other time soon.

Just in three hours ago. I parted as one of the last three riders ending the BRATPAC II portion of this little adventure yesterday afternoon. : ( What appeared to be fair conditions turned to severe storms within a few miles Romney, WV. My goal was to photograph all six Mail Pouch barns on this stretch of US50 but only two fell in a space where I was out of the rain for a short while. I rode on into the night thinking at some point I would ride out from under the system but the more I pushed the worse it got. Within a few miles of Marietta, OH the winds got stiff and there were numerous lightning strikes. It was time to get off the road. When I checked into the motel I surfed the Weather Channel to find I had stopped less than fifty miles from the western edge of the storm. It was time to stop anyway.

Didn't really want to part ways in the last leg of a ride but we are in the middle of a major remodel. The contractor who's installing our new heating system wanted to start work on Monday. I have a pretty big chore to play musical chairs with tons of stored items to give the guys room enough to haul the old and new units up and down the stairwell.

Many thanks is a huge understatement.

Oldog and Reep. Can't say enough how cool it it was to meet and ride with you all. Both partings became somber and bittersweet moments to watch you guys ride away with the majority of BRATPAC II lying ahead of us. I am so glad you joined us. New friendships were abundant on this trip. : )

Henrik. It was just a little harder to watch you ride away. Won't spoil the thought with words but I think you know what I mean, brother of the ride.

Mike and Sue Breedlove. Thank you both. You two are the truest and kindest and most generous kind of friends anyone could ever hope to have. Imagine their response when I called and said can I entertain a few biker friends of mine and oh, by-the-way, Lou and Carol Usher may show up to perform; would that be okay? They invited all of their riding friends and mayor of Franklin and various other citizens of their town. Mikey said it best late into the night when he exclaimed, "Looks like we got one of everybody!" He was right.

Many thanks to the Franklin gang for making our six-pack of Buell enthusiasts at home in your little piece of heaven.

Lou and Carol Usher. Twice you've performed at one of my rides. I am honored to be in your circle of friends and looking forward to someday returning the favors of friendship. Thank you so much.

Nutsosane. How cool to hook up with you by chance. I'll let FB1 tell the story but you folks are in for a good one. Hope your ride with your father went well and you return home without anymore redlights in your mirrors. ;)

Bob and Joanne. Should you find this post I want you to know that we really enjoyed your company and the chance to see adventuring through a couple's eyes. I believe I could set and listen to you for hours but the time we shared with you guys on Bluff Mountain will always bring a smile to my face. Thank you.

Thanks to Jose, Paul and Peter(Blublak) for trying to hook up with us. Responsibility called but it's seeds for a new trip.

Same to Alex, Matt and Spidey. Really tough to ride away yesterday but reality and responsibility called. Toss one back for me when Ferris and the Gentleman hit town. Seeds for another trip.

Thanks to Court for being there with us in spirit via the cell phones from the beginning to the end. For keeping us updated on the Bonneville results and for caring enough to check in last night. There's a reason why you are the leader of the Elves. : ) Thank you.

Thanks to Jim Corso for giving FB1 a new side trip other than sticking Spideys on anything that can't run from him. : ) I'll leave it at that for now but ping me when you know what I mean. ;)

Thanks to Erik for creating the machines the gave birth to PACBOG, BadWeB and BRATPAC. And thanks to Blake for the opportunity to conduct planning on this; the most multifaceted motorcycle board in the universe.

I'm saving my thanks to FB1 and Gentleman Jim in hopes that our adventure together only has a brief separation. If all goes to according to plan he and the Gentleman will overnight here Saturday and I will ride west with them Sunday before we part ways on this trip.

I have nearly three hundred frames to download, a ton of stuff to put away, knee-high grass that needs mowed and a remodel project that is demanding immediate attention. I'll post a few when I can but we'll leave the real story telling to FB1 when he gets home.

Ride Safe All, JB2

P.S. The Victory performed flawlessly. It's an absolute joy to ride. Has it's needs but none too complicated to change. It's one of the few bikes I could probably ride without modification for a long, long time. thumbsup

JB2,
I'll plan on seeing you in a few days, and I am sure that we can get a trip together to see Matt sometime this fall, even if we have to take something on 4 wheels. Glad to hear you got home safely, glad to hear you had a good trip.

Spidey,
I'll give you a call this evening with some details.

Ferris and Jim,
See you tomorrow afternoon!

Day 3

GPSDay3

Day Three was fine. OldDog did not snore, the food and fellowship from the following night lead to a fine sleep, and it was good to be among friends.

I slipped out early and shot some art shots of the various machines, all as different, unique, and as special as the people that rode them. It was quite the diverse bunch...

Name these bikes...

The hotel was beautiful, as you can see. It knew it's place and just let the flowers and the mountians be it's beauty. No polished marble or gold plating to try and compensate, it was happy and peaceful with what it was and where it sat.

Then we rode. And rode and rode and rode. Others took more pictures, but as it was raining quite a bit, I did not unpack my camera if they had theirs out.

Jim, Mike, and Ferris made those cruisers MOVE. Henrik was the model of smoothness and control, aggressively pursuing every last bit of a carefully selected and predefined envelope (6 or 7 tenths of ability perhaps).

Ferris made that Road King walk and talk... I hate to think how fast he would be on a sport bike.

OldDog, myself, and Gentlemen Jim followed up the rear, but not so far behind that anyone felt uncomfortable. I was worried about the pace, and it could not been better picked, and everyone riding was cutting perfect lines and smooth as can be (at least as far as I saw anyway).

After passing throug the gap (killboy picture links above), we crossed the Cherhola.

Up to this point all day, you could pretty much count on it... as soon as we stopped for whatever reason, the rain would trickle off. As soon as we got ready to get back on the bikes, the rain would come again. It slowed down speeds, but was otherwise a suprisingly insignificant issue.

But just in time for the Cherhola, things got dry, and the speed picked up. It's between that and the Blue Ridge parkway for the best ride around there... The parkway is prettier, the Cherhola is smooooooth and faaaaasssst.

Before passing through, we stopped at a great little restrauant for more food and fellowship. This was not the first time I heard the motto "ride to eat, eat to ride".

We retired back to the hotel, where a member of the group that will remain anonymous handed me a dixie cup of some of the best rum I have ever had. We changed, then lingered outside doing minor adjustments to the bike, while waiting for the pizza to arrive, which was delicious, but I ate WAY too much. When I drink beer, I eat too much pizza. When I eat pizza, I drink too much beer. It's a vicous little circle : )

And so ended day three.... which was pretty dissapointing to me, as it was an outstanding day and was really the only full day of riding I was going to get to do with the whole group : (

Reepicheep, Great pics and stories! It'll be interesting to see everyone's story unfold. I'm waiting with baited breath for your day three.

Just talked to FB1 and he and the Gentleman had a helluva an adventure today. No hints, y'all will have to wait but I think Mr. Bueller has found a weak spot in his heart for the southeast. More to come.

Sorry for the delay busy being responsible

After great chow and great folks , the group had the desire to check out other action in the area, Kelly had never rode a “B.O.B.” so FB1 hosted a short on post trip.

After arriving at where we expected for on post activities, We discovered that we would have to go into town for billiards and more beverages.

Fb2 was UP for some serious billiards, it just was not his night, …..
Hey Wade, You had to be glad I was along no one plays as BAD as I do ……

We hooked up with “Jenkins” and after a short walk we found a suitable establishment.

Wish you were here....

This young lady has a killer sense of humor.

The Crew..

FB2, FB1, Sgt Rush, Jamie, Ol Dog, Kelly, Sgt Dawty, JA stayed home and washed clothes.

Spreadem, Man You rock, let me know when you or Bill are comming to the beach..

I made it home a few hours ago, really cold, wet and tired. Thanks for a great time and thanks for showing Matt what a great community we are. More to come later, time for dinner and some relaxing time.

Well, that proverbial moment when your vacation is over has set in. This morning in the early a.m. we watched Alex and Gentleman Jim leave for the north and west together. At 3:00 p.m. FB1 sat sights on the south and west.

I got a few more thanks to add to my list now... Huge thanks to Alex Prior for coming this way with FB1 and the Gentleman. It was an honor to finally shake your hand. Your are welcome here anytime my friend when you're knocking back and forth between your hometown and your farm. Kim extends the same. You now have to help me get Matt off my target list. Let's cook up something in the next few weeks.

Dick Winger thanks for always taking in my friends and giving them the grand tour of your fine museum. It's an honor to call you a friend and to know that our motorcycling heritage is being preserved by caring folks like you.

Gentleman Jim. Thanks for opening up the door with Bob and Joanne. Absolutely one of the best "by chance" evenings ever spent. Thanks for the trip to Mayberry. Thanks for the offer that has me stoked into grasping for the Alaska ride again. Still don't know what to say beyond thanks and let's don't let the chance slip away. I'm sure the Captain and my Pop would approve. Kim does. : )

FB1. Sheesh where do I start? You're better with story so I'll let you tell it but I gotta say a few things you can't. Thanks for the best ten dollars ever spent on a trip. Thanks for the friendship and the adventurous spirit. We have two, really unique adventures under our belts. Each one a test of endurance and the elements and kicks dirt in the face of mundane. I'm almost tempted to leave on my next trip without a destination just to see what kind of magic it would bring.

Thanks to God for a safe trip and watch out for our brothers who'll still be on the road for 4 or 5 more days.

Over the road, motorcycle adventures. There's nothing that compares. It behooves explanation as to why each day seems that there could none better yet as each day unfolds they continue to rock. Name me one other medium that can compare.

Thanks dearest Kim for putting up with my lust for the road trip. It's tougher on you than most people could ever comprehend yet you support my passion. Thank you.

Pictures tomorrow...
