Where to start,
Not being very mechanical inclined but willing to learn and somewhat capable while being directed with a wrench I made the decision to upgrade my 98S3 with a 1250 kit.
The only reason that I chose to do this was an invite from a BADWEBBER,”Concretecarver” to come down to Ill. and have him do the lions share of the work while supervising me on what tasks were for me.
What an offer! stay with Ryan and his family get the bike upgraded with help from “Sjh”Seth then leave with a group of their friends to Elkhart and watch XBRR Buell race!

Upon teardown a couple of things were noticed right away, broken motor mount bolt in the head and front piston was missing an upper oil ring, also bent pushrods and some really mucked up heads, now I know why oil consumption was high. Next was removal of the cam cover,
To put 536 SE cams in, well every gear was crushed down, the pinion gear had broke the key and seized on the shaft. At this point everyone that had passed through was wondering how I had made the last 622 mile journey with out a major breakdown, luck I guess!

Without the skill and devotion of those involved I may have had to miss the races, they were not about to let that happen. With connections around town they sourced another
Pinion gear, a S&S gear. Buttoned it all back up and test rode it that evening, well there had to be another problem! When I pulled back up the bike was smoking and I had lost my lights, break, signal etc.well we found the problem after taking a look at all the electrical wiring, another very late night!

Next morning, we finished off the rest of the assembly while friends gathered to ride to Elkhart. The ride up was great my timing was adjusted along the way and the bike ran strong. Not a problem to be noticed until Sun morn,a strange noise from the front drive sprocket. It was then recommended that the bike should not be rode back but to transport it back in a P/U,lucky that one of the group had brought his!

Again some teardown, thanks to Seth for having a spare 29tooth sprocket, test ride-something didn’t seem right again, check compression and discover that there is none in the front cylinder, these guys are great there was no way that they were going to leave me stranded, tear down again to discover a bent exhaust valve, well you try and find a valve in a dealership when the valves part no. says its from a 1100cc.Another interesting thing is these thunderstorm heads being black but stamped with a 97 BUELL as a part no. Ryan had just happen to have some valves left over from a kit he had just installed the past week. After numerous measurements of said valve he said it would work!

And work it did! Back home again and really just digesting all that happened that week and weekend probably missed a few things like all the add-on’s put on the bike(carbon fiber, billet) And the fact that Deanna was able to get the racing shirt off Mr. Buells back for me!!!!!A big shout out to Ryan and his family,Seth,Deanna,Hoover and all the other Sterling Ill. friends that made this possible. THANKS!!!! SHAWN
