Dino, it's hard to believe, but YOU may be an even bigger freak than I am!

And proud of it! However, Char opines that it's pretty much of a tie.

That shot is way too cool Dino!

Did you plan that one or was it one of those shots that just happened? If it was one of those shots that just happened, how in the hell did ya catch that one!

Sorry,Dino, you gotta concede on this one,you may be nuts(we can all agree on that)BUT you did not go from Buell to Honda(albeit a V-4),to a Suzuki(Ugly as hell but a v-twin) to the big blue cruise missile to (drum roll please) a gol-derned HOG!Now that's PLUM crazy anyway you cut it.
I thought Ferris was younger than me?

FMJ (and Dino and Ebear), i've got good news, bad news, good news regarding BOB the Channeling Road King.

the good news: i'm loving the bike.

the bad news: coming up 33 out of Ojai last Thursday i decided to put BOB thru its paces, and thought i was hustling the Big Old Boat along with reasonable aplomb. at the next stop i asked Scott Page how i was doing. "You're doing GREAT! It's the first time I've ever been able to keep up with you!!!"

the good news (at least for you three): you guys MAY finally be able to keep me in your sights.

: )

Ferris, thank U for finally revealing the Highway 33 story. I've laid low, lost some sleep, and have only told Ebear my "dear diary" entries regarding the fact that "I finally kept up with Ferris." I only told him because he asked, "how was Ferris on the BOB?". Only because Ebear is the closest thing to being the brother I should have had, I pulled Ebear aside (on the legendary Highway 74 Oretega Hwy.) out of earshot of other Buell riders who might hear my deepest darkest secret, and revealed my new found happiness! But I didn't want to be accused by others of spreading terrible, horrible rumors, and have remained quiet, but restless, with my knowledge that "I kept up with Ferris." Finally, I can get 8 fretless hours of sleep tonight. Thank you Ferris.

BTW, the BOB is a beautiful bike.

Scott

that's funny Scott! : )

glad i could make your day. the TRULY sad thing was how badly i blew that one corner where i ended up in the oncoming lane. that's a serious miscue, and one i haven't made since trying to hang with Roger Roeszler on my S2 the first year i went to Sturgis.

the BOB's brakes are AWFUL (altho i think the fronts will come around in time). the rotors are chrome-plated (only Harley would pull a stunt like this) and it's taking awhile for the pads to wear thru this surface and get down to some decent metal underneath (and i assume the surface of the pads has been contaminated in the process).

anyway, i rely on my front brakes a BUNCH when i ride, and sometimes rely on them to get me out of trouble. that particular corner was (i think) a decreasing radius affair, and when i realized it was sucking up on me i grabbed a handful of front brake, and SHOULD have scrubbed enough speed to dip harder into the turn, but virtually nothing happens (yet) when you grab a handful of brake on the BOB.

at this point i added a footful of REAR brake to the mix, and only succeeded in locking up the back tire (the rear brake on the BOB is pretty much on or off).

by this time the pooch was duly screwed.

like i said above, i've not butchered a corner so badly in almost a decade of spirited riding, and it was a serious wake up call for me. as you observed at our next stop, i'm divinely lucky there wasn't a car in the oncoming lane.

now then, talk about admitting deep, dark secrets! : )

Scott, i know i thanked you several times that day for your ride leadership from Bartels to Frazer Park, but i want to do so again, publicly - thank you! it was a great day of riding, and i'm very glad you were able to take a Ferris Buellers Day Off and come play with us. : )

ride to lean,

Madduck tried desperately to get me to buy a set of narrower floorboards during our stop at Ventura H-D (the ones that come stock on the Street Glide, i think they're called Streamliners?)

first i gotta get the brakes sorted out, THEN i'll start worrying about throwing sparks. : )

Sparks are cool. Wes' doesn't spark too much anymore since about all he has left is that rubber flap that is on top of where the floorboards 'used' to be. We harp at him about them all the time.

Yeah, but once you get the brakes and handling quirks sorted out, think how much fun it will be going toe to toe with the import sportbikes at the next Battletrax event!

I know I have been amazed at what a good rider on a well ridden road king or electra-glide can do.

The floorboards are self-adjusting when the bike is ridden properly -- we can pretty much count on FB speeding up the process. You can throw beau coup sparkage prior to getting in to any *real* hard parts.

Wes must have bigger, er, dangly bits than i do. ;)

...think how much fun it will be going toe to toe with the import sportbikes at the next Battletrax event!

that WOULD be a rush, to put the hurt on a sportbike at one of these gigs. not sure the BOB has what it takes, tho, and i might need bigger...

...we can pretty much count on FB speeding up the process.

i'm workin' on it, the jiffy stand on the left, and the floorboard on the right. the process would go faster, i suspect, with bigger...

Ferris, I didn't even reveal to Ebear U blowing the corner. I was going to let that be "our" little secret. But, now it is all out! This is almost as good as going to a shrink.

It was fun riding with you'all on a Thursday! No cops, and very few cars. Lockwood Valley Rd. is the only place in SoCal where U can really push it (I saw 110 : ) ) and see for miles...and see for miles there are no cops coming at U!

Ride Safely. Guess we will do it again at Laguna Seca! Hello to D!

If you're gonna drag floorboards, install and use highway pegs. The floorboard does fold and it can trap and crush your foot. Not good. Suspension tunig using air pressure can make any of the touring models handle really well. Try 8-10 psi in front and about 17 in the back. Dragging bits really uses up your safety margin so it is important to practice the process over and over thill you getr good at it.

Madduck, i'm not entirely uninitiated when it come to making sparks on a motorcycle. for proof, look no farther than your garage. here, i'll save you the trip:

1

1

your Uly is one of the most difficult bikes i've ever ridden when it comes to dragging something (and i don't want to hear stories circulating on the web about how YOU beveled your peg feelers like that ;) ) -- it took me ten days and nearly 5000 miles to grow dangly bits big enough to do the above damage to your bike.

yes, i agree, dragging stuff means your safety margin is thin. which is why it always takes me awhile to learn the limits of any motorcycle i ride. i'm BARELY there on my Road King, dragging stuff that is, and if i get to a point that the floorboards are a liability when cornering (which is likely), then i'll do something about it.

in the meantime, the BRAKES are a liability. i'm half tempted to go down to the garage and grab a couple of pix, for those who haven't seen chromed brake rotors in (in)action.

as far as suspension adjustments, my Road King has exactly ONE: rear shock preload, via air. the forks on my RK are not adjustable in any way, shape or form, at least not without changing springs or fork oil viscosity.

that said, as of now the suspension on the bike isn't an issue, altho it prolly will be in the near future. FIRST i need to get my brakes sorted out, AND continue to learn the cornering limits of my channeling Road King.

don't worry, i promise not to trap my feet in the floorboards in the process. : )

Put some HH sintered pads on there. If the disc is hard chromed instead of just polished, it may take the chrome off(eventually) but I would guarantee it would be a noticeable difference in stopping power.

thanks Pammy. the rotors are definitely chromed, not polished, and as you can see from the pix they are exceedingly not flat, which isn't helping at all when it comes to "whoa" time.

Definitely falls in the "what were they thinking" category. It won't stop well, and if the bike gets ridden, won't look good after a bit either.

They shoulda taken the rotor from a Cyclone, cleaned up and chromed the inner carrier portion, and then put on the outer ring.

Reep, Harley gets away with a lot of stuff when it comes to producing a motorcycle that the metric bike makers would never dream of, much less would the metric bike marletplace ever tolerate.

chrome-plated brake rotors, ESPECIALLY on a machine this heavy, is but one example.

i knew this going in, and yet, for the fifth time in my riding career, i stuck my coin in the slot marked "Harley-Davidson" and pushed "Play." go figure. : )

i think the rotors will look fine once all the plating is worn of the brake swept area. you can already see a glimpse of what they will look like in the pix above.

the pads that are in there now are, i assume, glazed with chrome particulate, but i think i'll leave 'em in a bit longer and continue with the de-chroming process. occasionally while i'm riding, especially if i'm going downhill, i'll lightly apply the front brakes just to hasten this a bit.

FB: Maybe a little valve-grinding compound on the pads would speed things up!

My RK warped a couple of front rotors when I first bought it, but I can't remember if they were chromed or not. I put on plain, solid aftermarket rotors and have had no issues with warping or stopping power since.

Jerry,
I do not think the rotors are chromed. I have polished the stock rotors on my Road King and my Road Glide and once the pads brake in things work out fine.

Ferris,

I can bevel peg feelers with the best of em!!

I'll see your 4722 miles and 10 days and raise you 10 minutes with a dremel

Hopefully this will end the challenge round of dragging hard bits on Ulys.
