Jerry and Glenn did some lane-splitting on the 405 getting to Bartell's. After hearing the stories, this was strangely discovered.

Glad to hear Paul is doing fine.

I intended on seeing Paul through to N. Las Vegas to a refueling stop but screwed the pooch. The last few miles on the 160 trying to get to I-15 were just stop and go - mostly stop. After a little cuttin' and stuffin' we got to the on ramp for I-15 and I see a sign that says "Ramp Closed." I just start to go bye when I realize that there are vehicles in line to turn there and I could have turned. I look in my mirror and no Paul. He didn't make my mistake and got on evidently.

After I got turned back around he was gone, so I just headed South to my Hotel in Jean. Got cleaned up, jumped back on the bike to Primm where I ate a slab of ribs at Tony Roma's, won a couple hundred bucks on the slots and called it a night. A good day and night all around!

A special thanks to Jerry and Denise for the hospitality and lodging at the 'Dome.

Go Paul, Go!

Bertman...glad U enjoyed the new roads...nice to see U again too. The 33 is one of the best roads around in these parts, not to mentioned Lockwood Valley Rd. Had to clean up the Tuono yesterday after fording those creeks!

I had a GREAT time! Good to see old and meet new friends. Scott did a great job of leading us along some very nice roads. Madduck, Bertman and Tommy Two Stroke were great to meet &/or ride with. I did think I was going to play submarine for a moment at that last, hidden & unexpected stream crossing on Lockwood! The 405 was just miles of lane splitting even in the diamond lane. Just make sure you don't cross the lines to the other lanes when you split with the LEO's. The Uly was nimble OK but a couple of inches wider than Ferris's Road King on each side and I really had to watch my spacing. Maybe I didn't do as well as I thought? I sure didn't feel anything anyway. It was good to meet up with Dino and Dave Barr again. Always a fun & interesting time riding with Ferris and Denise is always a great hostess. My thanks to all of you!

yesterday i slept in some, then knocked out a strong day at work trying to repair some of the financial damage incurred by taking a couple Ferris Bueller's Days Off on Thursday and Friday.

today i'm up at 0200 and back with my nose to the grindstone (which is covered with 80-grit this morning, thank you very much), but not getting on here and adding photo captions, and writing a recap of Madduck's excellent California adventure, is killing me.

so, to give myself (and perhaps all of you) a fix - throwin' a small bone, if you will - here are a few words, then i need to get my soggy bottom back to work.

to say the camaraderie shared by all players over the past several days is wonderful is a woefully inadequate description. hooking up with riding friends, whether new, old or in between, is the bomb (as Scott Page would put it : ) ). i had a GREAT time with you all, and i hope you know it without me even saying so.

i've got to comment on two pix from the ones i posted. first, many of you may not have put two and two together, but this is my daughter Brynn:

i got to spend about 45 minutes with her in Victorville late Friday afternoon. this pic was shot in front of Victorville H-D/Buell. this is the first time she's been on a Harley in a while, and we actually spent several minutes doing laps in their parking lot, so she could go home and rub her boyfriend's nose in that fact that she had just ridden on her daddy's Harley.

Corso (Pdxs3t) has known Brynn since she was knee high to a valve stem cap, and i bet he's marveling at how much she's grown.

as am i. : )

she's presently going to college in San Bernardino, with a career in the medical profession on the horizon. (love those purple scrubs!) i'm proud as can be of my daughter, and don't see her nearly often enough these days. our visit was brief, but it added immensely to a very enjoyable two-day riding vacation.

there's a story behind this pic, as well:

i hope Erik is still following along in the FBRAT saga.

he will remember, as some of you regulars may, that right at the end of our grand tour of the Buell factory in East Troy last September, not one but FOUR A-10 Thunderbolts flew over the top of us, yankin' and bankin', and it seemed an altogether fitting and appropriate send off for FBRAT. (as i remember, Erik was hootin' and hollerin' the loudest at our impromptu air show, but me and Dave Stueve and Alex Prior were doing our OWN impression of little kids on Christmas morning, too. : ) )

well, less than two minutes after i sent Madduck and Bertman on their way after our fare-the-wells in Tecopa, two A-10's strafed me, low and slow, out ripping up the high desert and obviously dispatched from nearby Nellis AFB.

look VERY closely at the pic above. just above and to the right of my right hand mirror is a small black speck in the sky. look further to the right and you'll see the second speck. those are two Thunderbolts (by the time i could get stopped and get my camera out this was the best shot i could muster), and the fact that this ride had begun this way, and now, having just sent Madduck and Bertman off into the wild blue yonder, here were two more Thunderbolts howling and growling overhead, well, the colossal cosmicity of all this was not lost on me.

nor, i hope, on you.

sometime this evening i'm gonna ping Corso and send him the full-res version of this pic and see if he can crank out an enlargement mondo enough that we can actually make out a detail or two of the aircraft. i doubt it, but it's worth a try.

in the meantime, try to imagine how cool that was, having just seen "my" Uly motor off into the distance - thus closing a HUGE chapter of FBRAT from my perspective - and having a couple of A-10's choose THAT particular moment in time to fly by.

some things are just meant to be.

lastly (for now), my sweetie Denise deserves all the credit in the world for how hard she works to take care of me, and to take care of anyone lucky enough to spend some time in her company here at the 'Dome. i could write a book (and someday i may), but for now, suffice to say that without her love and support FBRAT woulda been a whole different animal. thank you, Denise - you mean the world to me.

ok, this took longer than i expected. i REALLY gotta get back to work. thanks again to all involved, it's my honor and pleasure to know you, and i appreciate the effort that each of you has put in to be a part of FBRAT.

and, if i may speak on behalf of Madduck for a moment, HE does, too.

he'll be doing the Black Canyon of the Gunnison today, on his way to Aaron and Susan Wilson's for a visit, and i'm MIGHTY jealous.

one of these days i may jump on a motorcycle and go ride across the country.

sure sounds like fun, doesn't it??? : )

It's GREAT therapy!

Great read and what an adventure this has been. This was the Uly making it's initial "I can do it" proclimation. I'd say it went light years beyond well.

By the way, I hope you handled the Nellis A-10's better than I did. I was in the area once and two of them came over the top of a nearby mountain about 6:00AM and scared the life outta me!

Ya can't hear'em coming and by the time you start cussin' them they are in another county.

I love that the government tried to retire the A-10's and started sending them to the bone yard only to ressurect them a couple years ago. They are, along with the B-52, the airplane that truely refuses to die!

Now get to work!

Ferris, et al

I am safe and secure a\t my nieces house in boulder. The senery was spectacular and the passes were all navigable. I'll have some pictures even. The cattle drive down Nevada 12 just north of bryce canyon held me up some and of interest to those who choose to follow my route, when you come upon a truck with a sign that sees "sheep ahead"; they are ahead and they leave "presents" for the unwary on the roadway. I am fine but the motorhome ahead of me left brown stains for a quarter mile. Went thru denver at an average speed of 80mph at least. I was glad that they had slowed for the construction zone, triple digits can be frightening for us "country folk", in town at least. Take care and will post more in a couple of days. Have to figure out how to get to Aarons from here and check on weather in the plains. It has been an absolute hoot so far and thanks to everyone for making my visit in Ca so special.

funny story about our visit with Peter, have Court remind me to tell you sometime. we were darn lucky to get the photos we did, and i think a "Spidey" sticker would have pushed him right over the edge. : )

By the way, I hope you handled the Nellis A-10's better than I did. I was in the area once and two of them came over the top of a nearby mountain about 6:00AM and scared the life outta me!

they were in front of me the whole time, so no Depends moments, i'm happy to say. wish i coulda gotten a better photo!

It has been an absolute hoot so far and thanks to everyone for making my visit in Ca so special.

i can't speak for anyone else, Paul...oh, what the heck, we ALL had a blast during your visit! glad to hear you're having fun, thanks for checking in. please tell Aaron and Susan we said hello, and ping us when you get another chance. : )

Madduck,

Glad U enjoyed CA! There are not many places in the US where U can go from slabbing/traffic to great mountain roads in about 30 mins. Not to mention, literally backing up to the Pilot Fuel Stop is a great dirt bike riding State Park.

Enjoy your new bike this summer!

Ferris et al,

I am done for the day. Staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Chamberlin SD. Am smarter already. Cold and rainy most of day so just hammered out some mils. Susan and BuellyDan were really working and Aaron was at his real job. Sue said hi and it was real nice to meet Dan. Fun watching other people work. Found two neatest towns out in the middle of nowhere; Valentine Nebraska and Winner SD. They mus be seen to be believed. I literally did not see another vehicle for miles then these towns with hotels and casinos are right there. Gas was scarce and another gallon in the tank would have cut down some worrying.

Take care you all and I am only 260 mile from home. I now have over 2000 miles on my/our Uly.

Ferris,

I am home. Mom came down and we went out to eat. 2399 miles and the only real problem was two zippers failed on my fxrg jacket. Dealer says it has a 5 year warranty and will get it taken care of right away.

Cooling fan was very annoying to me and strangers in the quite places of the park system. I started telling people that it was a new hybrid motorcycle and that they hadn't worked all the bugs out yet. Only one person didn't believe. It really does get better mileag at the 60mph in minnesota than the 75 mph I ran in west of here.

Ferris maybe now you can finish your review of the ULY and add Denises' also, she did say hers was done long ago I believe.

Take care and this has been truely epic. Will figure out this picture posting thing tomorrow.

When I first read your original post, I thought "who in the world would give up their brand new bike and let someone else have it for a period of time". Then came Madduck with the offer of his bike. I followed the travels of FB and enjoyed the pictures as well as the great reading. My favorite had to be the Field of Dreams, as it is one of my favorite movies.

Your adventure goes to show that there are some truly selfless people in the world and that good faith is still alive and well. It's not always easy to find in today's world when so many people ask "What's in it for me?".

My husband picked up his Uly in October and we have really enjoyed it. We are trying to find a way to participate in the BRATPAC II run in September 2006 through NC/VA. Details, details.....

Maybe we'll get to experience Buells FB style. Until then, be safe and I'll keep following the FB adventures.

Thank you both for sharing this through BadWeb. I for one have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Kristi

TRUTH, STRANGER THAN FICTION!

Here we have a seemingly ordinary Harley Davidson Road King. But closer inspection will reveal that this is no ordinary Harley. It is caught here in the act of...

...
channeling Ferris Bueller.
