Jerry,

Minor problem on the return trip. Woke up Sunday with half of my face paralyzed. I have something called Bells Palsy, should go away in a few weeks to a few months. Will limit my social interactions somewhat, dining our is embarassing. Still plan on trip, just thought I would warn you that it will be embarassing to everyone around when I eat.

Take Care

Paul

Paul:

I may be able to lend some comfort. I've spent considerable time with Haughton. If you think you can embarrass him, or dissaude him and D from showing you the finest hospitality, I suspect you'll have to swell a lot more!

For now, get yourownself on the mend, git to CA and have a swell GREAT time!

Paul, really sorry to hear that. I'd not heard of such an illness until Chris Walker, the British bike racer of WSB and BSB fame, contracted it about 4 years ago. I believe his recovery was full and took about a year or so.

Be well.

Blake,

The soldiering on thing went badly today. Failed, rather impressively, two of three blood tests. Good news is I don't have diabetes, bad news is my sed rate was high enough that they infused IV antibiotis into me for 4 hours. Tracked me down in the OR where I was assisting with radioactive implant and actually though I would leave a patient to care for myself. Some just don't understand "responsibility".

Thyroid ( TSH )is high enough that I am now going to be on hormones for that the rest of my life. So no the soldiering on thing went badly today. Tomorrow should be better.

Thanks for caring.

Ferris,

None of this is like life threatening, just annoying as all get out. Keeping perspective is key to staying sane. I will be fine and I know that. One of these days my time will come and I am hoping its a surprise. See you in a couple of weeks. Life is always better than whats behind door number two.

Still soldiering on in admirable form I'd say Paul. Michele was in for a hearth cath yesterday. We're all celebrating a clean, blockage free result. Sure makes you appreciate what is most important in life.

God bless. I hope your Bringing it Home journey is wonderful. I'm sure it will be.

Ferris et al,

Significant improvement made since tues. Dizzy spell and headaches from the antibiotics and anti virals have largely gone away. Paralysis on left side has stopped progressing leaving me with an eyelid that will close when I close the right. Almost tight enough to take a shower. It appears that I will have a functioning tear duct which will make a huge difference long term in being able to keep the left eye. The blood test made a huge turnaround such that I won't need a liver biopsy and thyroid hormones till results from next months testing. Right now I am just trying to figure out eating and drinking. Adult "sippy" cups do exist and "dry" foods go okay. So all in all things are starting to look up. Goning to fire up the street rod and start getting my riding miles up saturday. Life is good.

Crooked smiley is what I face every morning in the mirror.

Thanks for the kind words.

Hoping to meet all of you at homecoming.

Hey Paul, one of my employees got 'the palsy" a while ago. It scared all of us near to death. I thought he had had a stroke. After he found out what it was, I loaned him a small tinns(sp?) unit that I had. He put it on the afflicted area and not only did it entertain(while he was using it) the small children in his household, I think it helped him heal quicker. Anyway he got better, quicker than the Dr's predicted.
I hope you get better quick.

Madduck, just off the phone a couple of minutes ago with Kullan in the service department at Bartels, and your bike is ready to go!

you should prolly give him a call, at your convenience, if nothing else to prepare yourself for the bill...

the major items are 5k service ($225), and front and rear tires ($118 and $152 respectively), plus $150 (WOW!!!) to mount and balance.

Kullan can fill you in on the few little warranty issues they took care of, nothing major, small things like a clutch cable stay, license plate light assembly, saddlebag seals and the like.

he is aware that you'll be taking delivery of the bike on the morning of Thursday May 4th. there will be no "storage" fee (which they normally charge, he says, on any service bike that is on-premise for more than three days after the service work is completed).

altho i presented your bike to them clean, he asked if they could wash it. as i did when i dropped it off i made quite sure they were aware that Erik has signed your Uly in four places, and he assures me he will tell their bike washer-person to treat the autographs with the utmost respect.

he also assures me that your bike is 100% ready to go!

this is a cool deal, Paul. i'm looking forward to seeing you again, and helping you and your Ulysses start your journey home. : )

take care, sir, and see you soon.

Ferris,

Talked with cullen this am. They sound like good people to deal with. No problem with charges, been buying Harley stuff for so long I've gotten used to it. Even BMW parts are more reasonable. Somehow the service cost turns out to be worth it when you have a good dealer. Gotta keep the good ones in business.

ONly one major medical problem left, inner ear infection has not gone away. Flying is gonna be interesting.

Take care and see you soon

Paul,
I just started read this portion of the thread.
Wow, lots of things happening!
I hope all goes well with the "Bells" and you continue to make good fast progress.
Have a safe trip, if you need anything while you are in the Minneapolis area please give me a call!
I know at this point in your trip you will be close to home but the offer is still on the table none the less.

FB,

Booked my flight, first class one way to lax on suncountry air. Feels good just to type that in!! Riding went well, just have to go back to full coverage helmet to keep wind out of eye that doesn't close.

Route is picked and packing to commence after hog roast at harley dealer on saturday. From your palce thru Death Valley on up to zion on Friday. Highway 12,24 & 95a across utah. Skip over to 141 in colorado and up to Grandjunction on Saturday. Highway 50 thru Black canyon across colorado and up to Boulder on Sunday. See aaron and sue wilson on Monday and start the trek across the plains to Minnesota. Weather will adjust everything of course.

Had good news today, my left eyebrow has got some movement back so I am improving already. Next round of blood test is Monday, "sed rate" to determine infection extent and ALT to determine level of liver enzymes. Results won''t change trip planning just determine chemical schedule.

Sort of at the point in life that I go when and where I choose, no sense waiting for health to improve..

Current condition is likely to be as good as I get.

Take care and see you soon. I'll overnight at a Marriott in Marina del ray near Bartels. call you on the 3rd.

Brad,

I should be good once I get to Boulder, but thanks for the offer. One of these next weekends in MN I am going to be photoing the Uly in front of town signs from Homer, Hector-Priam-Vesta are all within 45 miles of Willmar. There may be some more also. Someone was fascinated with Homer and was in charge of naming towns, cool huh.

i'll be meeting you at Bartels on the 4th; i plan on arriving 08:30 or so.

from the ThunderDome to Zion in one day is a pretty good hike. it's doable, but we'll want to launch early on Friday morning. at some point during the day, prolly south and/or east of Death Valley, me 'n D will need to u-turn and head back to (our) reality.

see you next week!

Paul,
Sounds like you have all the details worked out and ready to roll but just thought I'd offer up what has worked for me... thought about shipping all the "stuff" you won't need from the ride here from Bartels'?? I never check anything anymore -- too many times witnessed luggage not ending up with me at the end of the flight - but carry on only riding gear, including helmet - lordie knows you, too, have watched the airport crew from the plane window tossing your stuff around. You'd have time here to pack/arrange the rest of your stuff instead of maybe having to repack once you do get to the Dome. Just a thought.

D,

Nice thought but I still haven't decided on riding gear. A lot of the good stuff shrunk over the winter again. I had a friend that was involved in the planning stages for the US entry into space. They had two choices, a big rocket that carried everything and returned or a system that threw away non-exxential stuf and returned with only the bare minimum. Both plans were hugely flawed but success can be had with either. Entertaining argument. Nice thing about touring on a Harely is that they have distributed essential supplies across the nation, Buell somewat less so.

Main point is not to worry and stay out of snow.

Paul
