Didn't realize there was a "Tale" - this is a re-post of a follow up I posted in the Storm Fronts section...

This was the eleventh year of this event. I think it initially started out as a BMW MC event - then the Adventure riders teamed up, and now I think it's pretty much a none specific bike deal - although BMWs' still seem to dominate. Anyway, we had attended once before (DVD VIII), staying in Furnace Creek Hotel, back we we owned BMW's. This year however, it was time to join the camping crowd, and be inspired to explore some of the many off road opportunities that exist in the area.

Here then, are a few pictures and brief words about our trip to this awesome part of California...

I left the office on Thursday afternoon around 2:30 pm, and met up with the wife, Cindy, at her place of employment in Glendale area

We were on the road by 4pm, on our way to Barstow where we would overnight, making the rest of the trip on Friday morning.

Bit of a late start Friday morning, so we stopped of for an early lunch at Mad Greeks in Baker

Next stop, DV Junction - intersection of Hwy 127 and 190

We arrived around 3pm, and decided to just set up our tent, wonder around the campsite, looking at bikes, and chat with folks.

Fast forward to the next morning - spot the only 'other' Uly?

A mix of other bikes, but mainly Katooms, GS' and KLRs

Frank's Uly

Cindy and I rode out together to explore some of the sites. Our first visit was to the abandon mining town of Rhyolite - a once booming town with a population of 10,000 people

If there was a dirt alternative, Cindy would take the sealed road route and I'd meet her at our destination...

Then it was off to Scotty's Castle

Then Ubehebe crater.

I had planned to ride Titus Canyon, but it was closed 3 miles up toward the mouth due to rock slide

Awesome place

Then it was back to camp for the evening festivities

Nothing quite like a beer with new friends after a big day out riding

Sunday morning, there was like this mass exodus, so we packed our things and headed for home

Still time to check out a few trails on the way home

After gassing up in Olancha, we bolted home on the 395.

The trip was short, but a lot of fun. Death Valley has so much to offer - there is always something new to see.

The Uly handled itself admirably, and while the off road opportunities were limited, I now have a better understanding of what this thing is capable off.

Maybe next year, some more of you guys might like to join us - or, how about a Uly Death Valley weekend - wouldn't that be sweet

Few more pictures posted here...

Cheers
-Jack

Hi Jack,

Nice. I may be heading out there soon.

Do you have a recommended list of roads to ride / places to see?

Regards,

Jim in Santa Barbara

Nice shots, ya gotta love a partner that rides!

The tail bags sure seem to sit high and way back! Did it change the bikes handeling?
