Oh, hell yeah : D

I figured you'd be the one to ask : )

This Dakar thing just keeps sucking dollars.
It's nice having the bike all painted up now, but I can't take it to the MX track to keep my riding condition up, without wrecking the paint.... After the stickers are on, it will get another clear coat, then contact over the area where my boots etc rub.
If I ride it without that, the paint will look like before the TV day ever gets here.

So, I've just bought a training bike.

At least after the Dakar I'll be able to stay in shape riding it, and not get a fat like some : )

Was talking to Charlie Borman today Pete and he doesn't look anywhere near as fit as you. Then again, his Dakar BMW looks like a street bike next to your Dakar KTM, so maybe he doesn't need to be.

Is he racing in a different class from you or something?

He's probably going in the luxury class.
As in riding with a support crew ; )
I'm doing it alone, so trying to get to a fitness level in regard to holding off fatigue, is an important thing for me.
Each day when they get in and wander off to rest, I start servicing the bike. New oil, oil filters, air filter, new tyres, chain, sprockets etc.
That's naturally assuming I haven't damaged anything that day as well : )
Did you read Bob's report? He did it the hard way this year. It's a really good read.

Hey mate you have lost a lot of hair I mean weight. Bike is looking good. Is the better half talking to you still after the new training bike purchase.
I think it is about time we all stopped reminding Henrik of how large his Butt look's when he has his shorts on.
It must be starting to wear thin by now (the joke not the shorts, although how they hold that butt in with out splitting is beyound me)

What you got about 7 to 8 more weeks of trainning then yer off mate, hell its come up quick.

Yeah that's it I bet Pete. The BMW crew were in abundance around him yesterday at the NEC Int Bike Show.

You've got a lot to do every day. Are you allowed help to do the service \ repair stuff or is it just you by the rules?

I haven't read Bob's yet and tahnks for reminding me.

I can take someone with me (...could have. The support places filled up long ago), but its a matter of dollars. They need a seat in a vehicle, or a vehicle themselves, plus their entry fees etc.
Nearly doubles the budget.

Yeah I saw the costing for the support vehicle but I was meaning can some other person that's with \ helping \ supporting another team \ rider help you?

My guess is no so that makes it an even tougher race than just the race itself. The privateer attrition rate must be high enough just from the mental \ physical aspect alone. More so if every nut bolt and screw is down to the individual - and tyre changing too.

Hell of a dig mate.

Got any very cheap rates for a SAAB WORKSHOP water slide transfer on the KTM Racer?

Peter,

I just read Bob's report from last year. It was really well written and held your attention from beginning where he fell down twice in the first 2km, and when he couldn't sleep at night, to the end when he couldn't believe he had finished the race all by himself with no support crew.

Great story!

Jim

Paul,
I didn't answer you because I figured Henrik would bite. Guess he's ignoring you, huh...?
And yep. Ingrid is still talking to me : )
Just.

Rocket,
How big is the sticker? I'm going to have to decide in the few weeks how big the 40 euro names will be, so a Saab Workshop one would be relative to that size I guess.

Jim,
Every couple of months I re-read it just to get my head screwed back on the right way...

He really have lost a ton of weight...didn't he
trainingprogram pays off mate. Good work.
But there is nothing compare with the real thing. Train as much as you can on the track. And try to get some roadbooks to practice navigation skills on.
The HP2 rides like hell. 3 gear wheelies without foolin around. Pity they wont allow it on the PD yet. Maybe next year, against the KTM 950 Enduro.

That 950 Enduro looks cool!
My Buell did 3rd gear wheelies too.... That ain't special ; )

Took the ring-ding to the track today, only to find out that they had a 2hr, 2 man team moto scheduled... : (
Ruined my training day somewhat.

So I cut up my headlight to make a combination of 1 normal and 1 Xenon system. Brackets are all done, tomorrow the wiring.

Jim,
I'be been following their progress on AdvRider.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72838&page=1&pp=15

I'm going to use his checklist....

Obtain travel visas for Mauritania, Mali, Guinea. Passport is in France getting visas now.
Order special navigation and safety instruments and mounts from France (GPS, IriTrack, Sentinel). Ordered. First delivery due today.
Check if beautiful wife is still living in house. She just brought coffee : )
Get AMA and FIM racing licenses. Medicals done. Paid. Waiting for delivery.
Rent satellite telephone. Don't need one.
Start going to bed before 2:00am. Yeah, right!
Design and have printed all stickers/artwork for sidecar (with sponsor logos). In progress.
Order some additional spare parts. Seems to be a weekly thing...

Clean kitchen sink of grease and other workshop debris. Not ready yet!
Warm up resume so I can get a job when I return from race. Still have one.

More than .... Looks ok!

----------

Speaking of ring dings, I took it out for my maiden voyage last weekend...
Damn.
What a different animal to the Dakar bike.
I don't normally ride on motor cross tracks. It's something I've just started since this summer, and the only bike I'd ridden was the Rallye. First corner today, wet muddy track, turned in the same way I've done there before, twisted the throttle, and went down : (
.
Two stroke 250's need revs before they make power. The Rallye just grunts. Nothing much happened when I opened the throttle, so instead of the rear wheel pushing me round the corner, the front just plowed into the mud instead. There's also a Scott steering damper on the Rallye. None on the zinger. The front tucked under and I went over.
It was an interesting beginning....
I liked the lightness of the 250 with it being so muddy, but for the rest, I'll take a 4 stroke any day. It's a good fun bike, but it sure takes more concentration than I'd been used to.
I reckon the Rallye is a whole lot easier to ride.
