this guy went whizzing by while i was standing out on the bridge grabbing pix. my camera has SO much shutter lag that this was the best i could do for a photograph, panning as he rolled by and hoping for the best.

it's cool that he waved. : )

ps: does anyone know the year, make and model of the car???

it would be even MORE beautiful with a lot fewer cars and a LOT more motorcycles (as would be the case if this was MotoGP weekend...)

it's gettin' late, it's gettin' dark, and it's gettin' cold, but i had one more item to check off today's "To Do" list.

TWO items, actually.

1) get a pic of Madduck's Uly at Laguna Seca.

I've been following the story for the last few weeks and didn't realize I was about to catch up with where you were at...

Words don't describe how jealous I am of your truly EPIC adventure.

I read this whole thing like a book and the story was great.

Now I have to join the ranks of the patient.

Thanks for letting us here in cyberworld join in on your adventure..... it is inspiring.... I only hope I can do half of what you did in those few days sometime in the future.

Looking forward to the conclusion

thanks for the very kind words, Adam, much appreciated.

it really was an epic ride, made more so because this one involved so many people.

which also made it more work, but, at the same time, made it immensely more unforgettable.

my apologies to you (and everyone else) for this sojourn taking so long to pound out, but i've been working some insane hours lately, and am hacking away at this as i can.

Adam, thanks again. i encourage you to do (nearly) whatever it takes to embark on grand motorcycle adventures at any and every opportunity.

life is short.

ride hard.

FB,

No need to apologize. Go ahead and stretch it out until spring. It will help with the winter blahs.
Of course, it also is making me want to go buy a uly, so maybe you better wrap it up well before riding season so I have time to let the idea cool off with the weather.

Jerry, I wish I could have done Mondays ride with you since you were right in my neck of the woods. But with Octoberfast coming up in a bit, I was fresh out of favors for days off and just could not wrangle it.

I use to bring my dirt bike out to Oceano Dunes back in the 80's when one could ride anywhere. Ah, the memories.

Cambria to Carmel on Hwy 1 is drop dead gorgeous on a clear day to anyone who is not from around here. When you have enough enough time to look away from the road that is.

Bertman, i appreciate the fact that you rode all the way down to the Rock Store with SB_Jim to meet me and the rest of the gang, and i enjoyed your company as we headed north that evening, and i'm also glad that you could be a part of Oktoberfast.

and i agree, the chunk of Hwy 1 between Cambria and Carmel is as good as it gets. : )

Ferris,
You suck. Great pics. Sorry for sticking that Spidey guy on ya, he kept prodding for your number and I finally gave in. July 21-23, huh? When's BRATPACII going to happen? I sense an epic trip for myself and Mr. Barchock.

Yeah, my laptop died, no more internet at the house until I manage to wrangle enough pennys for another one. So... a quick perusal of Badweb at the end of the workday is all I get.

Epicer and epicer...

it's gettin' late, it's gettin' dark, and it's gettin' cold...

indeed it was, and i needed to find a place to hunker down for the night.

it was the hardest thing in the world to leave Monterey tonight and head out to the track and beyond. Cannery Row is a Special Place, and even on an ordinary Monday evening the air was full of warmth and excitement, the smell of sea and seafood, the sound of laughter, the promise of a fine cigar and pitcher of thick beer.

i've spent many enjoyable hours down here, and i did NOT want to leave.

but...i also wanted to get home.

i had options after i got the docu-shots at Laguna Seca, and chose Carmel Valley Road as my escape route. this thin little gem of convoluted pavement had been on my short list from the beginning, but i'd never planned on riding it in the dark.

and the cold.

i stopped at a gas station in the affluent little village of Carmel Valley and fed the Uly. the place had a deli, and i grabbed the next to the last sandwich in the case and a couple of large local microbrews. i wasn't sure where i was gonna end up tonight, but at least i knew when i got there i could still party with myself.

Carmel Valley Road is sublime during the day, narrow, rough, rural and/or rustic at times, a casual, charming, motorcycle-friendly way to get inland or outland, depending on one's particular predilection.

at night, i found, it's a whole 'nother beast.

i was tired and cold. VERY cold, yet too stubborn to stop and put on my heated gear. surely, as i move away from the coast, it'll get warmer.

never trust advice from anyone named Shirley.

worse, the tiny little headlight on the Buell struggled to push its tiny little hole in the darkness, and left much of what i needed to see up to pure speculation and guesswork.

which kept my average speed down to about 25, prolonging the ride.

and the dark.

and the cold.

it seemed like a long time before lights began to twinkle in the distance, signifying some sort of civilization.

Greenfield, California, in this case.

not MUCH civilization, to be sure, but Shirley they'd have a motel for this weary traveler to call home for the night.

they DID, in fact, a south-of-the-border little mom 'n pop that was nothing to write home about, but looked safe enough for the bike.

i about dropped a load when the gal at the desk, in English that was barely recognizable as such, told me a room was fifty bucks.

for THIS place?

i whistled thru my teeth.

thru the kindness of many people this trip had meant only two nights in motels to this point, and on one of those nights the expense was split four ways.

i had left on FBRAT with barely a penny to my name, had even less so now, and even as cold and tired as i was, i couldn't bear to part with that much money just for a place to crash.

"Er, um, uh, like, could ya help a guy out a little bit?" i smiled and tried to look pitiful.

never hurts to ask, and this late at night, in a sleepy little farm town that sees very little traffic, the hope is that SOME money is better than NO money.

"No, seņor."

i climbed on the Uly and pushed on, into the night.

the map said King City was not far to the south, and i was determined to go no further.

King City should more accurately be called King Town, or King Wide Spot, but they DO have a Motel 6 (yep, the lights were on...), with a sign out front that read $39.99. score!

i honestly don't know why ten dollars and a penny made such a big difference in where i passed out tonight, but it did, and my journey, at least for this day, was done.

two cable locks and a disc lock later and the Uly was a secure as it was gonna be. i called Denise and gave her the 411. i'll be home tomorrow, my friend. : )

i inhaled my sandwich (still cold!) but managed to get thru only one beer (still cold!) before ESPN lulled me into a deep, peaceful sleep.

'night, Ferris.

one more day to go.

Ditto Alex! I am not normally one smitten by jealousy, but you are hurting me big time!
I've got to get out there and try some of those roads.
