will make our reservations in the morning. Does anyone know if Deals Gap motorcycle resort has camping avail? if they do, do they have showers? would like to stay near the action, but if there are no showers we are headed down to fontana's campsite again. It was really nice.

Yeah they do Keith ... first come first serve for like $12/tent. Showers and the works. They said they have yet to fill the spaces up even during peak weekends. DAve

Rowdy... naw. Maybe a throaty V twin running thru the gap at 2am. But rowdy.... not unless Bob streaks the place. :) Or unless someone with a girlfriend decides to ride the gap in the buff. ";)

DAve,
Be sure to bring your camera. Good or bad, we want to catch it on film! Speaking of bad, here is a photo of a wreck last year where the guy was very lucky and lived to tell about it.
 the rider lived
I had overshot this same curve the day before. I was even more lucky in that no oncoming cars were there.
Earlier this year Keith Huckabey did the same thing as me and the rider above. He was not so lucky. He was dead on the scene. This curve is on Rt28 between the gap and Fontana. It WILL sneak up on you. Stay alert.

DGMR is in a dry county from what I understand. I'm planning on picking up beer on the way & camping. Anyone bringing a cooler? I'll share!

Yes we are going, we'll be leaving on Thursday with a group from Baltimore and take the Blue Ridge all the way down. Right Now I'm thinking of taking the S3, but that might change.

We should be able to get to the Gap by Friday in time for the BBQ dinner at the Gap.

I'll have a camera too!

If you are in town this week, call me, 703-798-9585

Well, I'm committed (or should be...)

I'll be riding my BMW R100GS to my house in N GA (Mineral Bluff, GA, near Blue Rdige, GA) next Wed, trying to make it in one day from S. FL.

Will recover and work on some house projects Thurs, then ride to the Deal's Gap resort Friday for dinner. The house is about 90 minutes from Deal's Gap, so I'll be returning home after the dinner, then riding to Fontana Saturday.

If anyone wants to hook up for the long grind from FL, or if anyone needs a last-minute place to crash, let me know - there's lots of room at the house.

Fasteddieb:

I might take you up on the offer of hospitality since I failed to secure reservations at Fontana this year. I'm still unsure if I i'll be going as I'll be spending the week away from home and taking off the day after I get back will not sit well with my wife.

Anyone else having trouble sleeping?...It's getting soooo close...

A final few words...Cost of the dinner Sat at Fontana will be about $18 per person and will be at 7 p.m...The BBQ Friday will also begin at 7 p.m. and the cost will be $15...We've got about 30 signed up for each...

Hindsight being what it is, if we had known the number, we could have eaten better and cheaper at the Phillips in Robbinsville...Something to remember for next year...They have a room that would hold a group of this size (almost fill it up) and we could order off the menu...Someone remind us of this next year...Of course, then we'll probably get 75 riders and be screwed...

See Ya!

Greetings from the GAP!
Spent the weekend at Deal's Gap MR. You guys are in for a treat - the new pavement is nice. The Firebolt felt VERY good on the Dragon. Heard there was a three bike accident on the Cherohala Saturday, one rider in serious condition. I rode the Cherohala on Sunday, very light traffic and I didn't see any patrols... awsome roads....

Rode Bob's Grand Tour route Sunday - WOW! I'm working out of Knoxville through Thursday, will see ya'll Friday back at the DGMR.

M2Cyclone00: Beer is available 2 Mi. from DGMR on 129 at Tapoco Lodge, Limited selection though. They have a small store there.

Twisties overload! My route ran down from Cleveland, Oh via the slab to Charleston,WV. Took 3 and 16 South to Laurel Springs, NC Via the "Hungry Mother" (thanks Bob!!!!) That got the tires scrubbed in. Stayed at Station's Inn (Rt 18 & the BR parkway)- Biker friendly. www.stationsinn.com
Then rode 221 over to Boone, rode with some friends that live in the area on Saturday. 221 Boone to Linville was great, also 261 & 143 N out of Bakersville was awsome. Then took 80 South to the 40 slab W to the Gap. It's great when you have some locals for a guided tour! If anyone is coming down the BR parkway early and has the time, this is a great area to ride.

José...You first...I posted five rides that are now in the Sept 04 archive above and I have a sixth...Went to Kinko's this a.m. and had 75 copies made of each of six rides...These are turn directions only so as we talked about above, maps of NC, GA and TN would be soooo helpful...That and a one page "poop" sheet...I just love it when I get to use "Mother" Buell's charge card once a year (hehehe)...Then off to the post office to mail them to Leslie at DGMR and give her a phone call heads up...Spoke with "Mother Hen" Leslie this morning and she is also mailing some items for us to DGMR...So, guys and gals, the ride sheets, poop sheet and gifties from Mother Hen will be available at DGMR...We're just going to have to figure some way for just Bueller's to have access to them without putting this burden on DGMR...Maybe, with only 30 or so coming and 75 copies of each, this will not be a problem and we can just leave it open to the pubic...The sheets, not the gifties...

Dave...Glad you liked the tour...Isn't leaving 28 until the end of the day a hoot...You think you're done and then, WHAM!...Those sweepers are faboulous and you can "see fast" throughout most of them...306+ twistie miles, dude, we're proud of ya!...We also need a report of where you et so we can add that info to the data base?...See you Thursday afternoon, evening...

Plan here is to get on the road before 7 a.m. Thursday...Meet up with THe DAve at mm 22 on I-64 and head for the hills...I figure with a group of five we will probably do it in about ten hours which should put us into DGMR around 6 p.m. local time...

See Ya!

Bob

Dave...That is a GREAT pic...I take it you took that on 28 just below Fontana dam...The mist on the lake is caused by the cooler water from deep in the lake being released into the lake below the dam...It's wierd because there is all this "fog" on the lake and nowhere else...The sun makes the pic...

See Ya!

Et? I was having so much fun, that's all I stopped for was Gas & Gatoraide :')

28 is nice, the Lake Cheoah pic I posted was on 28 at the end of the ride. I stopped for 15 min. there, not a car, bike, or sound while I was there. The mist on the lake was really unusual, it was flowing on top of the water.... like a current.

There's a little mom & pop in Robbinsville on 129 on the right called The Dungeon Restaurant (weird name, good home cooked food, good steak). Closed Sunday though. Not many restaurants open on Sunday in the area. There's a Wendy's and a Popeyes Chicken in Robbinsville also. From DGMR I like to take 28 to 143 into Robbinsville instead of 129 :)

Bob,

I have at least three maps for GA, and about 6 maps of TN and NC. I tried to get more but they wouldn't let me have them!

I'll make copies of some of last years ride maps to take with me.

There should be plenty of ride options for the people there.

Or you can just ditch the maps and go by "dead reckoning!"
