this shot gives just a tiny little glimpse of the road coming up, but it's enough to portray the adventure of it all. : )

two shots of North Catamount Reservoir (which lies just to the northwest of Crystal Creek Reservoir), one with telephoto, the next without, to provide a sense of distance and elevation.

portions of the Pikes Peak Highway are paved, but most is not. below you can see one of the transitions from pavement to dirt.

in the center of the photo is North Catamount Reservoir, and at the extreme right is Crystal Creek Reservoir.

on your way down the mountain they actually shoot your brakes with an infrared temperature gun at Glen Cove, and will not let you proceed if your brakes are above a certain temp. in this case you must pull over long enough to let the brakes cool down.

in 1894, Katharine Lee Bates, a teacher from Massachusetts, traveled to the summit of Pikes Peak and penned the words that later became "America the Beautiful."

this pin now has a place of honor in my garage, that is if Duck - who owns the second (?) Uly to ascend Pikes Peak - didn't steal it during Oktoberfast. : )

Travis "TBear" Scott, our faithful guide and companion for the day, and FB, getting high. : )

some Pikes Peak fun facts:

1806 - Lt. Zebulon Montgomery Pike makes the first recorded attempt on the summit. Pike named the mountain Grand Peak.

1820 - Major Stephen H. Long names the mountain James Peak in honor of Dr. Edwin James, two of four people to make the first recorded ascent.

1840 - the official name of Pikes Peak is adopted by the US Army's Topographic Corp.

1891 - the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railroad line to the summit is completed, round-trip $5 for adults.

1901 - the first automobile (a Locomobile Steamer) reaches the summit.

1916 - First Pikes Peak Hill Climb (second oldest auto race in America behind the Indianapolis 500).

1916-1936 - the highway is operated as a toll road at $2 per person.

by 1948 the Pikes Peak Highway is nearly abandoned, suffering from years of deterioration after being toll-free from 1936-1948.

1948 - the Pikes Peak Highway is re-established as a toll road under a permit from the Department of Agriculture, and continues to operate successfully under management by the City of Colorado Springs.

2005 - the first (?) Buell Ulysses XB12X reaches the summit! : )

Phantom Canyon Road was once a narrow-gauge railroad line. pretty cool stuff, carving and twisting like this through the mountains.
