...the problem being, however, that the staff at the Loop (who seemed a little surly to me) took exception to my antics, and i had THREE of them breathing down my neck as i took this pic.

i only got away with the photo because i promised to take the sticker down when i was done (which i did), and one of my "witnesses" was quite adamant that i explain why i was doing what i was doing.

bite me, i thought, as i wandered back to my margarita.

Spidey, the folks at the Loop po'd me bad enough that i was bound and determined to leave a little piece of you behind, whether they approved or not.

it ain't the women's room door, but it's the entrance to the place, and i hope it stayed there for a while before someone spotted it and peeled it off. : )

I can relate to the Kansas bit. I just passed through there, (Twice !!) on my way to KC MO. for the V-Rod Homecoming Rally. 1800 miles there and back with about 500 of that bombing around MO and eastern Kansas. Not much to see and real fun with the wind gusting from the south and keeping ya at about a 25 to 20 degree lean. yikes, don't need to do that again for a while ! I'll see you all in a couple days for Oktoberfast !! been there, T Bear

Well FB1, I'm finally up to date on your adventure and have to say I wished I coulda been there through the whole trip but if only for a moment it would have to be when you met Dick German and his wife.

I've had a few exchanges with Ray German through the Team Elves effort. (The decals on the Blast sidecar rig were designed and supplied by yours truly.) After Dad passed a package arrived in the mail from the Senior German. It was a very nice and very well written letter concerning my pop and a CD, Highwayman. Dick said a track on it reminded him of Big Jim and he felt compelled to send it to me even though we had never met.

The CD was a hit with me; not just that track but the whole thing fit like a favorite pair of shoes. I wrote a short letter of thanks back to Dick and sent along a copy of Dad's CD. I would have much rather thanked him in person and maybe one day I will be so lucky but in some small way you've done it for me. Thanks Ferris.

The Highwayman jewel case is badly scratched and the CD is nearing unplayable - that's a good thing. Thanks again Dick German.

All I can say is wow.....

I talked to FB (sounds weird saying that, I'll stick with 'Dad' :c)) a day or two ago, and tho he couldn't see it, I couldn't get the smile off my face listening to the stories.

Epic? I'd say yes...I think the true definition of epic riding would be someone like Fran Crane, and I'd like to think she's doing an Ironbutt up there while I'm writing this...but this ride sounds like it's gotta go down as being one of the most memorable for those involved.

I'm sitting here in Korea pouting a little, but there's always next time...right? Can't wait to hear more stories...

Y'all take care and ride safe...

Wade

Denise and i are wiped.

tomorrow begins Oktoberfast, and gettin' ready is always a Big Deal.

we're off to bed, but before i go: JB2, thank you, Wade (FB2!), thank you, and Jeff/Thunder, thank you.

i'll write and post more, but honestly, it'll be after the weekend is over.

the pix above, by the way, are from our dinner stop at Manitou Springs, CO, and it was a GREAT time! most of the pix i posted are courtesy of Don Casto, a stand-up Hooligan if there ever was one.

like i said, it was a great get-together, and i'm appreciative of everyone who showed up.

i'll write (and post) more, but right now sleep is calling my name.

thank you everyone, for posting, for caring, for being who you are.

FB

ps: if you want to follow this weekend, check out "Oktoberfast 2005" in Storm Fronts.

JB2, Ferris, Mr. German...
When I was working on my Ride Across North America trip and selling patches, I received over 100 notes, postcards and letters from Badwebbers and others wanting patches. Since I was still trying to finish school (I've learned to never again try to do a trip like that when you have Thermodynamics, Dynamic Systems II, Machine Design II and some lit class to balance with a bike trip), Mom and Dad in PA were fielding a ton of letters from people requesting patches and giving well wishes.

Mom calls one afternoon and asks if I know a man named Dick German. I think and think and think. 'Mom, I can't say I know that name, why do you ask?'. She replys that Dick wrote an awesome letter, which was being forwarded to Michigan, and I couldn't miss it. Wow is all I can say. I can't find Dick's letter with all of the RANE stuff tonight, there's just too much of it to dig through.

Anyway, I tried in a million ways to meet up with Dick when I was in CO/Kansas, just couldn't pull it based on the time I had. So I met him in Topeka, after a few hours rest, at a picnic table drinking a cup of MickeyD's coffee on my final minutes of FBRAT.

SO cool to finally meet Dick and Barbara, see pics of the bike he built and hear about his struggle. Never did I imagine that riding with Ferris would, again, bring back the trip I did last summer.
Dick and Barbara, thank you, take care, keep up with those Dickbuilt creations!
Epic!

I've procrastinated enough! I'm a lurker, not a poster, but I must express my appreciation to Ferris and FBRAT.

It was such a pleasure to be able to meet Ferris, Alex, and Thunder in person, and I'm sure Barbara feels the same. This also goes for the very sweet Chris Canfield. I hope to sometime meet brother Court, and hear some of his "remind me to tell you sometime" tales.

Topeka Buell/HD is a neat place! Anyone who is in the area should visit. A huge historic limestone building, with a fantastic museum. The WR, KR, XR, and CR (Sprint) race bikes brought back many fond memories. There were lots more bikes but somehow the race bikes jerked at this old man's heart. Though it was far before opening time, we received a guided tour! Thanks Bruce!

Thanks to Ferris, Alex, Thunder and JB2.

ok kids, i'm back in the FBRAT saddle, after another (as in third annual) Oktoberfast. these gigs are a ton of work, and it always takes a few days to get the place cleaned up, get back in the proper sleep/work mode, and post the obligatory pix and insults on the Oktoberfast thread. : )

i've added some caption material to the last batch of pix (most of which are compliments of Don Casto - thank you brother!), and will post s'more here in a bit.

but first, an apology.

i KNEW this would happen.

Jeff "Thunder" Griswold, i departed your fine company in Hays, Kansas a little earlier in this thread, with nary a thank you for your hospitality and enthusiasm, and for that i'm terribly sorry.

you made a HUGE impact in Alex's RANE Ride last year, and you did the same for me and the boys THIS year for FBRAT.

i really appreciate your friendship and sense of adventure and camaraderie, and thank you for a fine KC BBQ and such a wonderful environment to call home for the night, and for getting us to Topeka H-D/Buell on time.

and on top of all that you ride half-way across Kansas with me? you're twisted, but you're MY kind of twisted.

anyway, before i moved on i just wanted to say, loud and in public, how much your involvement in this ride meant to me.

hope we get to do it again some time. : )

also before i move on, a GIANT thank you to everyone who showed up in Manitou Springs to welcome me 'n D. heck, Don drove all the way down from Boulder, which was VERY cool! it was an intimate group, but loud and enthusiastic, and it was great to hang with such kindred spirits.

sorry if i seemed a little ragged, but it'd had been a long day, and between the miles and the tequila, well, i was content to let YOU guys do the entertaining.

it was AWESOME to be with Denise again, and we were both looking forward to the next three days on the road together.

thank you again Boulder, Denver, and Pikes Peak for turning out and making us feel welcome, your enthusiasm and support are very much appreciated. : )

JB2: thanks for the great post, my friend. glad to have been a small part of something very large.

Dick and Barbara's surprise visit was fantastic, and discovering that it's all part of something on an even grander scale is just too cool.

i hope you get to meet them in person some day. i KNOW it'll be wonderful for all concerned. : )

Thanks to Ferris, Alex, Thunder and JB2.

Dick and Barbara, the thanks are all ours.

i appreciate that you came out of lurk mode and said a few words, and hope that you will do so again in the future. there are a lot of people here who respect and admire the two of you, and you have an open invitation to jump in here at ANY time and grace us with your presence.

thank you again for being such a wonderful part of this community, and for extending your friendship to me. it's a gift i will always treasure.

it was a long ride in the cold night to reach TBear and Sandy's place in Guffey after dinner. there was a big storm percolating all around us, with plenty of lightning to provide surrealism, but we stayed dry.

and cold.

finally, at the end of a VERY long day, our home for the night came into view, and we could put this day in the books.

it had been a keeper, through and through. : )

mileage today: 1181.0 start, 1869.0 end, 688.0 total

You bet! We discerning BadWeBrs need to know how the Uly does endurance-wise in snow. Can you find some and ride through it for a long time? Isn't there a nice highway heading up towards Anchorage? That oughta be a nice weekend Autumn ride. : )

And of course how can you shirk your duty to put the thing through its paces on the local race track. : ]

Tomorrow... I'll call ya bright and early. : D
