DETAILED ITINERARY:
Sat 9/3/05 – Get-together at Harley-Davidson/Buell of Appleton, 5322 Clairemont Dr., Appleton, WI 54913 920/757-1651
-- All day
-- Group photo 2 p.m.
-- Dinner ride 5 p.m., location TBD

Sun 9/4/05RIDE LAUNCH: Appleton, WI to Waterloo, IA (via Wisconsin Dells, Ulysses S. Grant home - Galena, IL, Field of Dreams - Dyersville, IA)
-- Meet at H-D/Buell of Appleton by 6:30 a.m., ride launch at 7:00 a.m.
-- Dinner party 7:00 p.m. at Beck's Sports Brewery, 3295 University Ave., Waterloo, IA 50701, 319/234-4333
-- Lodging in Waterloo, IA: Heartland Inn (Hwy 63 location), Heartland Inn (mall location)

Ride route from Wisconsin Dells, based on Mapquest and previous travels, courtesy of Alex Prior:
US 12E to WI 78S to WI 69S to WI 11W to Stockton. US 20W to Galena, stop at Ulysses S. Grant house. US 20W to East Dubuque, stare at Prior's back yard for a few minutes.

Dubuque County back roads to the Field of Dreams in Dyersville. I'd post the names, but there is no way in hell that someone not from here is going to find any of them.

From there we are off to Waterloo, probably back on the straight and boring US 20 unless Dave is aware of another route.

If you are planning on meeting us at the Field of Dreams: US 20 has one exit for Dyersville, so you can't really miss it. Heading north through town, you'll cross over a set of railroad tracks, take the next right and that'll take you out to the Field. There are numerous signs in town as well.

For those headed with us to Waterloo and in need of lodging: The Heartland Inn has two locations in Waterloo, one at the Crossroads mall, the other right off if Highway 63. The one off of 63 is close to Silver Eagle Buell, the other is, well, by a mall. Dave says the one by the mall has a bit more of a selection of restaurants and watering holes, Mike says the one by the dealership shall suffice with one good restaurant (and watering hole) right next door. I've not the time to scout them out, I'm sure they will chime in though.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

From 99buellx1:
I have accommodations in Waterloo available at my home.
I have one spare bed, a couch, a garage, and internet access.

Stipulations:
I have a dog and two cats. (they will lick like you even if you don't lick like them.) (actually the cats will probably leave you alone, but the dog is a lover.)

Nellis AFB info, courtesy of Josh/Drfuyutsuki:
All right All you Buellers, for those that will be attending the Nellis AFB stop I have some info and I need a few bits of info.

As CharlieBoy said Craig Road is the most direct way to get to base, but there are a few things to consider when taking it: There is a "Food Flavor" plant about half way down that gets rather ... odiferous on hot days and it can be rather congested. I would suggest this route if you are coming from the West/South.

If you are coming from the East/North I would suggest SR-604; it skirts the backside of the Raceway here and bypasses most of the congestion.

When you get to base please enter using the Craig Road entrance. You will notice a visitor's center on the right hand side of the road, please park there and wait for me to come down and escort the main group on. Bb you should have a pass waiting for you when you arrive.

I have mentioned gear requirements before and the reflective requirement is rather subjective; a full-on safety vest is not required and simple reflective belt diagonally across your torso meets the requirement. If your jacket has a larger amount of reflective material such as piping down the arms and across the shoulders you should be fine.

I have spoken with our Security Police and none of you are required to have an MSF course. You will need a current driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. Each must be up to date or you bike won't make it on base.

OK now for the food and Alcohol!!!!

I talked with Ferris and agreed that beer and a Bar-B-Que at the hotel on base was a pretty good idea. The question is what would we want to eat and drink? I have access to a pretty good cross section of alcohols and beer at decent prices (guess that depends on how much you normally spend for it though).

I can pick it up early on in the day and you guys can chip in to reimburse me when you get here.

Let me know what you all want to do PM me or post it up here.

Please RSVP to me for the Nellis ride. I already have Ferris and Denise, Alex, Glenn and Mark all listed to stay over on base. If anyone wants to come on and hang out but not stay I need to know that, too...

Josh

Additional info regarding Ocotillo Wells courtesy of Al Lighton:
We'll be here at Ocotillo Wells SVRA (State Vehicular Recreation Area)

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=33.151367,-116.111412&spn=0.005163,0.008929&t=h&h l=en

(cut and paste link in to a browser address window, multiple comma's in the address trick the BWB linking code)

Most of the time that we go out there, we camp at Hidden Valley instead of Holmes Camp, because there is less people there and Holmes camp is usually filled with rude quad riders doing dusty doughnuts in camp all day and night. We don't have to worry about that this time of year, there will likely be no one out there because it will be hotter than hell itself. Ocotillo Wells SVRA is just barely above the Salton Sea, which is slightly below sea level. Average daytime temps in early september are 105F, but we aren't getting there until late in the day when it will have cooled to a chilly 95F or so, if we're lucky. But Holmes camp has two things that Hidden Valley Camp see http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=33.144972,-116.041846&spn=0.005163,0.008929&t=h&h l=en doesn't have: Trees and pay showers. So bring quarters. We'll likely wake up to a few motocrossers who will show up for a short ride at the crack of dawn before it gets too hot, otherwise, we'll likely have the place to ourselves.

You should be able to find your way there via the Google map links. Cell phone coverage is spotty out there. And the Blu Inn and Desert Rose will likely not be open, so we'll need Joanne to bring everything we could possibly need.

Approx Total Time 5 Hrs

There are several points of interest along the way to the Rock Store: Vincent Thomas Bridge on Hwy 47 (Ocean Blvd), Portugese Bend on PV Drive South where the land constantly shifts resulting in such frequent road repairs that there is a sharp transition to "solid ground" resembling a launching ramp -- a good photo op to get airborne, the canals at Venice, Venice Beach itself and a scenic overlook at Saddle Peak & Schueren Rds.

I'm not pressing this but if we have time for something completely different: a "Dead Engine" race down Tuna Canyon which is a steep, twisty one-way downhill, and then pick up the route on PCH & Las Flores Cyn to Piuma Rd. Fun! Fun! Fun!

From Chairman2rgm:
Along PV Drive you'll go by Green Hills Cemetery. Please think a couple good thoughts and give a nod to Joe Boyd's grave on the hill. [Russ, thanks for the heads up. We will stop briefly at Mr. Boyd's grave site and pay our respects. -- FB]

Ferris, I subscribe to the Chris Matty school of tire usage.

AKA, USE IT ALL!!!

I've ridden more than 100 miles with steel belts showing.

Don got a flat going through Rim Forest.

But Al was Johnny on the spot with the repair.

Finally at Camp Ocotillo.

That night...

the wind was so strong we had to anchor the tent to the wife's cage.

Scott had the right idea...

and the right equipment.

Buelling Man begins

Wait! What's this? Are you sure this is a good idea with the wind and all? Did anyone consult an expert? Yeah, you're right. That's wouldn't be any fun.

Monster burnout!

And the Buelling Man goes down in flames.

Well, We didn't wake up under a sand dune.

Ready to head out Sunday morning.

For a while now, I have been bucking for an "epic" ride. This past weekend certainly delivered.

Thank you again to everyone involved with F.B.R.A.T. from the planning to the execution. Everybody I rode with I had a blast. Your friendship is priceless.
Tom, special thanks to you for helping me right my bike and get it back on the road after my spill. Dino, sorry we didn't get to spend too much time together riding, but there is always Octoberfast.
And my warmest thanks to you Ferris and you Denise for sharing your home and your hospitality with a bunch of road-weary riders.

(in my best Cameron Frye voice) Ferris Bueller, you're my hero.

Ferris, I think if you just sign your name that ought to just about wrap up this fun and photo-filled ride report.

Jim,

Sort of looks like Buell has a winner on its hand, doesn't it. Gonna be hard to get an objective unbiased opinion out of Ferris tho.

Epic advntures don't generate objective

Hi Paul,

Hmmm... I only got to spend a brief amount of time with Ferris on this adventure, and that time was near the end.

But I believe Ferris was humbled and deeply touched by the outpouring of support and enthusiasm of all involved in this epic adventure. To the point of being nearly overwhelmed emotionally. Not to mention what may have happened to his liver!

Nevertheless, I think Ferris will be very objective. Perhaps even brutally objective, for good or bad.

I don't know Ferris as well as some of you do, but if you want my read he is a man of his word and he takes it seriously.

I think he'll do a wonderful report.

Meanwhile, back to business.

YES! IMHO Buell has a WINNER on it's hands. I placed a deposit down on a Barricade Orange Uly myself. And NO, I have not ridden a Uly yet. But I will...

That doesn't mean the bike is perfect (no bike is) or that it can't be improved upon. But Buell has come up with a very compelling product that appears to be well thought out, well targeted and fun!

Now if I could just get one with a seat just an inch or so lower than the pre-production low version! ; )

Paul, my opinion of your Ulysses has already been inked, and is unbiased and objective.

I have know Jerry almost 10 years now and have riden a few miles with this man (I should say behind this man, I could never keep up with him). : )

He is a man of his word and will be very objective and unbiased in his report of the Uly. We all may be surprised in reading what he has to say.

thanks Blake!

here's a word that's been tossed around a BUNCH on this ride, but FBRAT was indeed epic from beginning to end, thanks in no small part to a group of Hooligans (Erik, Madduck, the Wizard, Denise, and everyone else who had a part of this journey) who just didn't know any better.

thank you ALL!!!

please check out my day-to-day FBRAT journal for more pix and words, and a million thanks to everyone who kept this dream alive with your passion and enthusiasm while i was on the road.

EPIC!!! : )
