Heck, I'd travel out to East Troy for a class like that. Would be great - where do I send the deposit ; )

Hey Cap -- if you're an hour outa East Troy, you and I are darned near neighbors!

the factory/dealership relationship is complex, and fairly adversarial, generally -- I'd bet that most dealers would scream to high heaven if HDI put put on a class like that, whether they actually sereviced Buells or not

I think it's a great idea, and would definately sign up -- I'll add it to the list of stuff I take to the regiona BRAG meeting, just to get the news into the Iron Tower through a different channel (marketing tells us to transmit a meesage 7 times in 7 different media to really get it across)

I know a couple of dealerships that have had tech nights during BRAG meetings -- while very generous of them, clearly, they didn't get into main shaft seal replacement in the hour long session {smile} -- also, the number of folks in the chapters I saw do this that acted even vaguly intersted was tiny (this could be entirely chapter dependant -- other chapters might have fist fights over good spots near the lift)

That gives me another good idea... Buell Factory Track Day, something very street / safety oriented.

Bomber,
No doubt closer than you'd think...I've probably waved at ya a couple of times.
Back on track...First, Buell, if you're listening, you just heard four guys sign up...almost half of your first class at East Troy.
I know what you guys are saying about Tech Night, and all,it would be great if BRAG or a decent dealership could run a program like this once a month. My fear is that they'd a) do a tech night for dummies,("this is a spark plug, and tonight we're going to show you how to install it!"; ) or b) run short of time to do a decent job. Let's face it; I'm a tech junkie. I take airplanes apart, inspect them and put them back together every day for a living. I LOOK for reasons to work on my Buell. Just "maintaining" my Buell doesn't give me the rush I'm looking for, and I don't want to tear apart a perfectly good running bike without a reason. What I'm looking for is to know every nut and bolt on my M2, and how/why to tweak it to make it perform better than the next guy's...without breaking the bank...and without disassembling my ride and putting it out of commission for a year. Sort of a Smokey Yunick of Buelldom. Any yuppie can throw fistfuls of dollars at a bike and impress people with chrome and American Sport Bike goodies...although I can honestly say not too many Yuppies are into the Buell thing.
(Sigh) Maybe I should buy a frame off eBay and build a Buell from the ground up.....

That's OK- I have a musclecar project that's getting pretty pi$$ed at my Buell anyway. I guess I'd better throw a few bucks at it and make it stop.

OK, Buell, so here's yet ANOTHER "Freebie" idea...
If the "Riders on the Storm" maintenance classes are above and beyond, how 'bout the Next Best Thing?....Instructional DVD's? This way, you'd only have to do it once (on film), and could do a separate DVD for each model (P3, S1/W, S2, S3/T, M2, X1...well, you get the idea. Then you could sell them to us for real money...kinda like what Haynes does, only on DVD. There could be chapters/thumbnails so you could jump to the section you wanted. Best of all, unlike a maintenance manual, you could actually see the best in the business doing the work the way it should be done using the right tools (which, naturally, you could have links to, and sell us those too.) This would be too cool. Please don't fool yourself into thinking that by NOT doing this you will get more Buell work at the dealerships. Guys like me will forge ahead regardless. It would serve your best interest to ensure we are doing it properly. Guys that have no mechanical skills won't do it regardless...and there's your dealer work. C'mon, be "Definitely Different"! I'll buy the first M2 DVD.

What race part do you think you can not get?

There is much misinformation. You may recall the recent case of the "obsolete ECM".

Let me know what you are looking for....good chance it may be in stock and ready to ship.

Remember, just last month, the "obsolete" tank decals that it turned out there were over 1,000 of?

I'll help if I can.

Court

P.S. - just me here, but I never call someone I want something from a "fool".

I call everyone I think fondly of fool . It's nothing personal...just, uh, a manner of speaking.

Anyway, I had inquired about race headers and ECM's for M2's. No luck.

I believe these parts should be kept in full production and readily available. If Harley dropped their entire line of Screaming Eagle parts for Evo's and pre '04 XL's there'd be an uproar.

The aftermarket can fill some needs, but it's still not right, IMO.

Court....the blue tank decal (second edition with raised letters) is NOT available. That's right...it's an "obsolete" part. What's really funny is that the decal (first edition that bubbled) is readily available. Go figure...

That is incorrect. Part number M0779.K is available.

Randell....where were you 6 months ago??? I'm not mentioning were I obtained the decals for my S1W. Let's just say that even some Buell insiders couldn't find them. I had to go beyond the corporate level.

I'll keep that part number handy for future reference.

Josh: if it is and it *is* the wrong part number, drop me a note and it will be corrected in the next parts manual.

Easy to fix...by the way...there is a sheet in the back of all parts manuals to be used to advise tech pubs of errors/omissions/commissions and general brain farts.

These guys have a heck of a job. For a project that should take 10 months they end of the victim, compressed between completing certain engineering and the marketing folks desire to get early photo and media bikes. Imagine someone calling and saying we need a complete parts manual by next Tuesday.

Now....you know why the Tech Pubs group is so cranky...they were MADE that way.

Yes you can still scrounge for stuff...you shouldn't have to. They should be AVAILABLE not OBSOLETE. That is my point.

The '00 parts books list it (of course) but all the ones since have the correct updated-for-01 p/n.

The computer still lists the old # and dealers still have the old ones on their shelves and sell them.
I've now tried to contact Rocky Mtn HD/Buell again to point out they sold me a recalled part and try to get my $$ back. We'll see, but past attempts got no response.

Dude: The goal of the bookends that surround you pushing to meet a deadline product development engineers to the and I want it NOW, not July consumers will, I submit always be in cahorts to make the life of you and your type miserable.

We, the world mounted on our milk crates, demand paper stained with the oily reminders of projects past....

Deal with it...I mean deal with the CURRENT version of it.

Well Rick, sorry I tried to help.
My point was that yes they are obsolete but still available.
I was trying to make your day not ruin it.

Low and behold the manager at Rockey Mtn got back in touch with me. No comment on whether there was pressure from other places (but I did mention the NHSTA recall by # this time).
I hope someone at Buell does a parts check for old belts on the shelves.
