HEADLINE DAYTONA

BUELL RELEASES GROUND BREAKING NEW MOTORCYCLE

Today, in Daytona, Buell Motorcycle Company, Inc. announced plans to start production of a radical new 2 wheeled wonder! Rightly named the AREA 51......

Whoa! I DID see that bike! I tried to catch it and it just flew away from me. I saw the rider drop something. Since I was riding my old, outdated XB, I decided I wouldn't be able to catch up. So I pulled over and this is what he dropped!

New Buell Test Rider!

Probably be a good idea to start selling all these old bikes before this really happens!

Anon!...... I wish I could be a Anon! (But I don't get the Dyna dude}, how does that left side margin thing work? In fact we need a hierarchy list of SVIPS (S is for super) so we can keep you guys straight.I've been on this site for years and I still can't figure it out . I know that Anon is Erik B......,OK I don't really know that! Honestly though, I do not like water jackets, radiators and pumps But our government controls the amount of sound and the amount of fumes not me so the h2o cooling thing is a must. Unless an air cooled engine uses high tech ceramic materials will allow closer tolerances, hotter running temps . Make a high tech air cooled motor Erik, OOPS I mean Anon, hint ,hint and they will come You might have to make an "off road use only" option!!!

Shawn,
Jim doesnt quite have the grasp on what constitutes an anon. Its true it may be Erik..but his posts are usually easy to tell. Most of the anon posts come from other factory workers, Buell/HD employees who for various reasons cant identify themselves, etc. Just because you see an anon post does not mean it is Erik & more often than not..it isnt.

VR1203,

The government makes the rules, true. But the XB12 passes '08 CA emissions without a catalytic converter and without an air pump. Most water-cooled motors don't. The XB12 and XB9 are cleaner in emissions than the V-Rod. So that is another old wives tale. Not saying this to be a pain, just to get the facts out.

So how many changes do you have to make to a motor to give it a different name?

Chris:

Mind if I copy that license? I want to reproduce them for a special little thing coming up. I have some friends who I am betting would love to have them.

Could be the 2nd most effective "get out of jail free" card.

That's hilarious!

I was waiting for someone to ask, is a Revo, without fins, maybe smaller, maybe bigger, maybe with some changes a Revo, or is it something else, kinda like to the 1200 from a sporty and a Buell, different, but fraternal twins
If its not a true revo you can deny all you want, once out its a game of of i told you it wasnt a Revo, same word game was played when Dyna spotted the XB12
One thing to consider, Dyna was right again, a Revo powered Buell contrary to most did or has existed, proving Dyna was right all along, kinda funny
2 new models will come out this year, thoose 2 are anybodys guess, my guesses are
CityX12(with a Black frame)
and
An M2 replacment with a lower cost
just guesses however

Rog, the semantics game gets played quite a bit but it doesnt matter because in the end we see that yes indeed they have built at least 1 Revo XB & yes they have toyed with the idea. What that may lead to is anyones guess. Personally I would love to see it hit the market.

Doesnt have to replace any bike either, just be sold alongside the current models just like the V-Rod is sold next to "real" Harleys.

No. He talked about FX racing

Was he misquoted? Taken out of context?
No. It appears to have been a created article with a created "source"

Did he meet an untimely demise?
No. Other than my call (apparently most the rest of the world was willing to take the Enquirer at face value and declare the sky falling, he'd had one other call on it

I know...I know....I screwed up a perfectly good fantasy with facts. Off to go running....have fun.

I think the semantics difference being the words "tested" and "production"

Chrysler built and tested several turbine-powered cars in the 60s and ran a few on the streets for a couple of years. Based on those tests they said there would never be a turbine-powered Chrysler...
sound familiar?

I can't take credit for the license. Remember? I found it laying along the side of the road! But I DID find out where he would get a replacement.

Well, it sure got people going on a lot of other boards! My fault to a great extent. Yes, I'm the original 'Roswell' poster. After 28 years of riding an XLCR, I have to say I'm perfectly happy with Buell's use of the Sporty based engine, and it would be my personal choice if they built a Buell model that would fit just a little luggage.

However, I'm sick and tired of all the brooha that starts up everytime someone else comes up with the 'Great American Sportbike', a role that Buell does a good job of filling, but that most sportbike riders ignore because; 1.Buell is associated with Harley, and 2. they are waiting for a bike that makes as much or more HP than the latest Japanese Race Replicas, and they expect it to sell for $10,000.

So every few months we get an article somewhere about the Fischer, or the Roehrich, or the Motoczxyz, and people rave and go into frenzies that 'someone' is finally going to build the bike they've all been waiting for.

Now, I know if Buell does build a water-cooled model, it won't sell for $10,000, because Buell is in the business of making money, and can't afford to sell some models as a loss to promote the rest of the line as the Japanese do. But still, it would be nice to have something to lay these silly attempts by underfunded dreamers to rest. Especially as, as far as I can see, none of them will reach production. They are all out there promoting their dreams and hoping someone with big bucks will jump in to pay for it all. I don't think they realize that since the E-H and Indian debacles the supply of fools waiting for someone to separate them from their money has gotten pretty low.

I have been a lurker here for a long time. I personally ride a Kawasaki ZRX1200 suited for sport-touring. I have Krauser bags and a few other goodies.

That being said-I rode an XB9S and found it to be a very fun bike. I rode it early last year (just before the 1200's came out). I agree with most posts that Buell does need a sport-touring model (or at least one suitable for 2 up and can take sizeable soft luggage). I am not going to say that it "needs" to be water cooled. I, in fact, like that they are air cooled and belt driven. I do think that the motor in it's current form can use some refinement. The one I test rode was parked in front of a dealer and there was a very slight slope to the driveway. As I was waiting for the salesman to take me for my guided ride, I was looking over it while it idled. Due to the vibrations it was actually creeping backwards on it's sidestand. To me, that is inexcuseable. It can use a good counterbalancing system and a slightly higher rev range. It did smooth out nice under way and when ridden like a Buell should be, it mooved pretty good.

In short-If I was in the market for a new bike I would probably get a Buell. I would not however-sell my current ride to get one. Some minor refinements to the motor and that would be a possibility. I am generally the exception to the rule. A lot of my "sport bike/ sport-touring" buddies won't even look at them just because of their affiliation with HD and the powerplant that they use.

I say keep it air cooled and belt driven but use overhead cams (it ain't rocket science-they are easy to work on) and smooth out the motor Buell would see a lot of people cross over to their product. It is a fine product as it stands but to convince others to go with Buell changes MUST be made. Does that mean using the V-Rod anchor?
Hell No!

BTW-I read a lot of posts on hear that say why Buell/HD is soo seacrative. Many say that if info was leaked people won't buy and would wait for the new product. That is true but it also backfires on the company. If I had seen spy shots or read articles about the XB before I got my 2001 ZRX- I am certain I would probably have a Buell in my garage... Because I would have waited for it.

Geeze-I have been reading this board for over a year and this is my first post.

Thanks. This is a great site. Don't know why I did not partake in it earlier.

There will be a day that I do have a Buell.
If they do not make a sport-tourer it will be a second bike.

Steve:

Welcome.

If you ever need to ride a Buell let me know, I am in NYC and ride (yes, even in the snow) in New Jersey fairly frequently. I'm hoping we see better wx soon.

Many Buell owners have "second bikes". I have 4 sitting in my office now and at one time had 9. The Buell is a stunning compliment to, perhaps the mopst popular 2nd here, the BMW GS. I'm also eyeballing old Triumphs, CL77 and CB-1 at about anytime.

Confidentiality is important for any manufactuer, it's not, as some here would imply, Buell's creation.

Ford, Porshce and Mercedes have begun, in the last couple years (oh yeah, Saab too) doing little "web teasers" to try to snare some of that "gotta have what's coming next" element of the market.

Honda, back in the days of the great Honda-Yamaha moto-war made perhaps one of the best textbook cases for what CAN be done by a well heeled company wanting to flex it's muscle.

Again, welcome and glad to have your input. Hope to see you on the back roads of Hunterdon County soon!

Court-
I was not sure if you were adressing me (my name is Scott)
but anyway-
Like I said, I can see their aspect of confidentiality. I used to work for Ford Motor Company in Edison, NJ (which is closed now) so we heard of the marketing tactics. Spy shots were often planned as you said to peak interest. I personally think that letting the public know that progress in the product line is happening, is a good thing. Buell and HD flat out deny any new developments until the unveiling. Again, in my case it backfired on them because I always liked Buells. Years ago I was in the market for a bike and was seriously considering an M2 Cyclone.(unfortunately that product line had too many skeletons which scared me away at the time). Had I seen the XB line I would have waited a few months to get one instead of the ZRX. Then again-the first year XB9's were going for over 10g's which might have deterred me.

I love motorcycles but the last thing I am is "Brand Loyal" . In other words if a practicle machine is developed that handles and can tour I'd get it. I even photoshopped a set of ducati bags on an XB12R on my computer and it looked real good. (that pic was lost when I got a virus and had to re-load my computer)
A new bike is not in the immediate horizon for me due to a career change I am going through (was an auto worker-now I am 3 months away from my radiology tech licence) .

If Buell made the Minor changes that I said to the motor- I think they would have a lot of people corss over into their product. I understand Erik's vision but buisness is buisness. Think of it- Who needs a bike like a Triumph Rocket 3? Yet they fly off of the showroom floor because the cruiser market wants the biggest motor and the fattest rear tires. Not saying Buell should aim for the Hayabusa but give the bike a little more of a sporting heart (motor)and sales would increase. Every article I read on the Buell's say the same thing- "What a great and wonderful motorcycle...Too bad it has that motor. " A lot of people do base their purchase decisions on what they read by moto journalists unfortunately.

The XB9R was that bike for me. Took 15 years for me to see another bike that [re]lit the passion, desire, and "need" to purchase.

Any news you would have had about the XB, including that it WAS EVEN going to exist, more than 120 days prior to intro would have been pure speculation.

There were several LARGE hurdles in the final push to the finish line.

Buell acted wisely.

..."What a great and wonderful motorcycle...Too bad it has that motor. "

...Ahhh, blissful ignorance!

What a FANTASTIC bike the S2 could be with the XB motor! I would love to shoe-horn a new XB motor into a tube frame!

That XB motor is one neat tidy package. Proven reliability, performance and a form noticeable across a parking lot.

Sorry, just never had a big attraction to the other HD twin...started with a 'Sporty' and never looked back!
