I think my shifting woes may have been related to my shift linkage. It's such a sloppy POS.

I have thrice had it apart, and lately had turned all the hinge parts to true them up some and made new acetal bushings for it to tighten it up. well they had almost totally siezed on the shaft. so I'm hoping that is what was causing my missed 1-2's

so now I'm wanting to put the xb style linkage on.
Or something else?

I would like to order them from Dave in appleton.

Get a Banke for your X1 and you will never worry about your shifter again.

D -- bronze bushings make a wolrd of difference -- as does the late style shifter -- with your resources, you could easily make one of a kind that'd be aces!

Do you have the old style "over the cover" linkage? I Switched my S3T to the new short linkage and it's great. Much less slop in the shifting. It's still not as smooth as metric bike, but it's a big improvement.

23 tooth splines $#%$#@^%@#$!!!

thanks bomber. I had made a custom dealie. I broached a 24 tooth spline into it an couldn't pound it on the shaft for nothing. the shaft had 23 teeth. I mis counted 3 times!!!! to pissed off to continue right now. was considering buying it instead.

it gets better.... I even started over once, going for 23 teeth. but this time in stainless as opposed to aluminum. my homemade singler point broach won't cut it (carbon steel) it's dead now. I need to braze carbide to a piece of drillrod or something.

oh well.

or, you could always start with one fo the many available pieces (stock or aftermarket) and make the stuff that doesn't require majik tools like a 23 point shaft --

sit on yer milk crate, have a scotch, and use your best tool (in the BIG head!)

Somewhat related: Does the 2000 shift detent plate upgrade make enough difference to justify the work of replacing it? (Removing the nuts on the crank and clutch looks like a PITA).

In general, people are very happy with the upgrade, but there have been one or two "weird" transmissions that were actually worse with the new one.

Getting the clutch and stator assembly off is not as bad as it looks, once you fabricate (and I use the term lightly) the locking bar, and get the right sockets.

I would do it if I were you. Its good to get in there an look around anyway. And in fact, if you are that far in, you are only about 5 bolts from pulling the whole tranny out, so you can inspect it and your 5th gear drive assembly as well.

I changed mine when I did the stator,

That with the upgraded shifter makes a world of difference.

Wow, I never missed a shift with the stock linkage on my Y2K X1 and I ride aggressively. However, I have been thinking about the conversion to the 2001 style linkage to get rid of the Boomerang.

Question: With the new design shift mechanism, is the throw shorter or about the same?

The reason I ask is that a shorter throw would be the only factor that would motivate me to make the conversion.

I must be the only one that likes the over-the-cases shifter on my 00 M2. It's a lot less susceptible to crash damage than the multi-link shifter.

Dsergison ,, thanks man ,, glad you like it.. when you get yours done post some picks, and you may want to put in a couple extra taped holes where the tie bar mounts so you can vary your shifters ratio. change the stroke,, and shorter isn't always better.

Outrider, you must have something wrong with your bike if it shifts good with the stock shifter. Before I changed to a Banke it was one of the worst shifting bikes I have ever owned, second only to my 52 BMW. I have a couple of friends with Buells and that was also their biggest complaint. I tried replacing bushing, adjusting the rods blah, blah. Even friends whom I let ride it couldn't believe the crappy 1-2 shift. I like it now and the 2 friends liked it so much they upgraded the shifter.

hey steve,, ill see what i got.. probably not any "prints" to say but some sketches on autocad. ill see what i have tomorrow and let you know. the shifter on mine is a little bit of a reach for regular footed people. works great for me with sneakers . with boots its a little far. but i wear size 13 so you may want to lengthen it. i plan on lengthening mine before summer.. Ps let me know if you have autocad and version..

and steve if you are doing a shifter you may as well replace the brake lever too. just makes both sides match.

TomB...Thanks for the info. Will put the new shifter on my TTD list.

Guess I must have a different shifting habit most likely nurtured when I owned a Yamaha FJ1200. That was one of the bikes that was easy to miss a 1-2 shift and the problem was well published. It took a while to adapt to it but when I did, missed shifts were a thing of the past.

Ewww...I hate the laughter from the crowd when you miss a shift. Is way too embarrassing. LOL

Your welcome outrider. I found mine thru the classifieds here for about half new price, it is a Banke. The Buell X-1 2001 shifter is about 160.00 from a dealer and works great too. I think the Banke is about 300.00 from American sportbike. they pop up on ebay once in a while too.
