It sure ain't normal! Obviously the bushing needs replacing, but I'd take it to a HD dealer(tell them it's a Sportster) and talk to their best mechanic to get his opinion on the case. That's ugly, have you found the cause? | ||

Figured it wasn't normal, but I'm fishing for ideas. It's actually a used cover I was considering cutting down and putting on my bike, gonna do the engine casings in black and for the price they wanted ($10) it would save some trouble and time on painting. Brothers got a mill so we can do repairs and cleaning up pretty well, thought some of the more seasoned folks here could help. Thanks. | ||

Wow! Bad, but how cool looking is that! Look at how the adjecent cam mount in the case got machined down by the cam gear! Wonder how on earth that happened. Can't imagine it can be salvaged without a lot of work. I assume the bushings seat on top of the (now machined away) tower to both set the cam position, and cam squareness. So it seems like you would have to build it up and machine it back down, which sounds like a lot of work. (but all my welding and machining is done with a tube of JB Weld and a dremel tool, so don't take me as the voice of authority). Thanks for posting the picture, that looks really cool. For $10, it's worth it just as desk decoration! | ||

ain't no way I'd put that on my bike. Even after re-machining. If you do decide to go ahead, you do know that you will have to install new bushings in the cases and ream to fit the new bushings in the cam cover don't you? I assume you will be splitting the cases as well. | ||

Is there supposed to be a thrust washer there?(I'm a Honda mechanic...most I've seen of mine is the head gasket!!) Looks like someone changed cams, and left it out. I let the cam wear into the soft aluminum and bronze. (Message edited by smitty808 on January 20, 2005) | ||

i do not recall seeing any thrust washers or shims of any kind in the camchest of my 1998 sportster. have run 3 different cam sets in there, and i am quite certain that i did not deal in any way with an endplay issue. | ||

Just got another cam cover from the used parts bin, this one I inspected thoroughly. Looks okay. Jody, I have no intention of opening up my crank case, that job is beyond me and I won't pay someone else to do it just so I can use a cam cover. It's funny that it's so bad, the rest of the cover is pristine, almost brand new. Probably put together wrong from the factory then fixed by the shop. The bad cover will probably just go to the recycler with the rest of my used aluminum and brass. Reep, I checked the "new" cover and the adjacent cam mount is relieved but not to that extent. We're gonna mill down the replacement cover on Monday, should be fun. Might throw a rear pulley on the mil and get creative, since I saw what Steve did I'm getting ideas of my own...
