I just got a copy of the July 1996 Motorcyclist magazine off eBay to check out the S1 review. As I was reading the article I came across a sidebar titled "Quicker Than Lightning". It was about a particular hopped up S1 owned by one, Court Canfield. I was surprised to say the least. It just goes to show, you never know what or who you will find in an old magazine.

Is this news to anyone or am I just the last person to see this?

Is it the fabled 'Parkway Blue' S1? If so, there is an article in one of the Battle2Win magazines about it. I can post some pics tomorrow.

The pics are B&W and there's no mention as to the color.

If someone can tell me how to scan and post the article I'll do it, as long as it doesn't infringe on any copyrights.

>>>>"One of a kind"

Ahhhh....Barney. Bought, completely disassembled with 0 miles, and built from the ground up.

When I say "disassembled" I mean each and every part. Every nut, bolt, connector and piece.

27 parts, including brake calipers and motor mounts polished.

Special, soon to be prime time color from the factory, Parkway Blue (don't ask me why it was purple, that'll be in the book : ) paint.

The body pieces, on the original version and the helmet were arranged in the physical relationship they'd sit on the bike and super painted in the booth at Buell. The helmet still sits on my desk.

Later on the design guru at Buell has a brainstorm and we outfitted Barney with all carbon fiber bodywork that was masked and painted by the kids in East Troy to look like the bike had been hit with a purple water balloon.

The parts (I have a photo of them when they arrived) cost more than the Buell did. One of the two most expensive Buells I have ever owned, the other was 5 years before HD entered the scene back when Erik and I were kids and he was riding the famous red, white and blue RS1200 and did what stands as one of his funniest moments, the IL tollway dialogue in the middle of the night. (remind....)

Barney had some great moments. Broken in locally in Topeka in very COLD weather, straight to Atlanta to host the first Buell B.R.A.G. club and meet owners at Earl Small's one evening. Later in the night on to Daytona, to play for 10 days. Erik rode Barney in the very first appearance of a Buell at Daytona. There was a bit of a problem in that on the parade lap....well, Erik was....the word might be "enthused". I have the pictures as he did the mondo stoppie down pit row. Several of the Lightning Series riders who were unable to keep up on the parade lap were unhappy...the Buell enthusiasts were on their feet.

The one of a kind gift from SuperTrapp was actually a modified auto muffler in 2-1/2" and the sound was offensive.

This kind of performance is common place now and, by today's standards, Barney would be mediocre in terms of performance.

After Daytona, Barney was shipped to CA where he was Reg Kittrelle's rider for 6 months, then shipped back to Topeka.

Remind me to tell you sometime....

: )

Court-
Thanks for the teaser. That tiny little article can in no way compare to hearing it from you! In the words of Paul Harvey, "And now for the rest of the story". So how about it Court, can we hear more?

PS. Court, I was told you are the guy to talk to concerning old Buell literature. If that is the case will you let me know?

WOW! Court, If you turned me loose on that collection, I wouldn't be seen for months, lol. Is there any chance that you might have some extra 1996 S1 sales literature in there? I have'nt been able to find it anywhere.

Cataract2,
That is the first Battle2Win magazine, which are becoming really hard to find. I have most of the Battle2Wins that were published, still missing a few and am having a heck of a time finding the rest.

Court, along with a few others, were very gracious is donating some of them and getting them signed by Erik as a part of the RANE autions to benefit the American Cancer Society.

One of the small things that Court, and the other great people on this board (Ferris is another that is out of thie world) do to help out others.

If you can find a set, grab them up, last set I saw on Ebay went for well over $150.

Yes.

I fed him a delicious dinner (Lasagna made by an 84 year old Italian gal) when he was in NYC a couple months ago.

Seemed to have a calming effect on him. I may try it sometime while chanting political rants and see just how well it really works!

QUALIFIER: I did not cook it!

A friend gave me a collection of early Buell stuff: posters, Battle2win mags, catalogs, stickers, etc. Really cool stuff. Unfortunately, I think it was all thrown out when I was in the hospital. Oh, well. At least I still have the very nice windbreaker and sweater.
