The Siberian Express rolled through last night. 40mph winds and sub-zero temps. Brought 4 or 5 inches of new snow along with it. It's hard to tell exactly how much snow actually fell since the drifts are several feet deep in spots with bare ground in between. Not really motorcycle weather.

In retrospect this is probabley why I'm the only Buell owner in Eastern Montana. Too bad I despise snow-machines.

Rob

Yep, same here.

Just started the winter bike projects (with all the associated frustration, stripped torx head, clutch cover removal for polishing) to stave off the itch.

Good luck to ya,

Hey Mike,

I've got the same winter bike project going as well with ALL the frustrations. I too, recently, stripped a torx head. Man, what a pain in the a**!!! But what else can I do in the Yukon of Northern Michigan.
And Bob, I too despise snow-machines.

My father in law recently got a Polaris 600 RMK.

Wow! It's power and suspension are amazing, very much like riding a newer CBR600.

Too bad you don't like snow machines

I think I may just grab a handfull of those torx thingies from the dealer, every time I remove the inspection cover I bung one up, and I have only tightened them to spec.

Replace those stupid torx screws with stainless allen blots.I can get em at my local Yardbirds.--Damn things are a blight to mankind, worse than the damn philips headed screws that held all my old dirt bikes together and needed an impact wrench everytime you even thought about undoing them.

Yardbirds? Is that a home improvement/hardware store?

You're right about those torx bits, absolute pain.

And, definitely Not putting those back in!

Sorry for your winter woe's, I went for a ride in the north GA mountains today with temps in the mid 60's! I hope all your projects work out for you!

My only advice is find a Snap-On dealer and buy your torx bits from him, never had one strip on my bike and I use RED locktite! Yes I know Snap-On tools are expensive but they are well worth the money.

Even Arizona has its share of winter woes. We had some pretty severe flash floods here and the road from here to Jerome will be closed for a month or so. I guess there won't be any ice cream runs for awhile.
I've never had any trouble with Torx fasteners but I could see why a cheap Torx wrench that isn't fully seated could be a problem. I've also seen people try to use an allen wrench to remove Torx fasteners, that is almost guaranteed to cause a problem. Buell uses an odd size Torx fastener, T37 if I remember correctly, in a couple places. If you try to use a T35 on these you are just asking for trouble.
If the fastener you are trying to get out is Loctited in, try heat to break the bond. Then cut a slot in the head with a Dremmel tool. Next use a hammer type impact impact wrench with a flat blade bit to break it loose. Just don't go ape with the hammer.

G.

It ain't the bit, it's the head. I have had success just drilling the head off the ones for the clutch cover.

Once the cover is off the remaining bolt is exposed and EASILY removed with vice grips. That's why I don't understand why the things strip out in the first place if tightened to spec.
Maybe this is addressed in the knowledge vault.

I'll take Jim's advice and use allen heads this time.

No matter what kind of fasteners you use in the clutch cover don't forget to use antiseize compound.

Thanks for the advise. My next step was to drill it out. But I might try the Dremmel approach as well.
Thanks,

Ah, maybe that's my problem, I know I didn't put anything on the threads last time I opened it up... Do you get a dielectric/corrosive reaction with aluminum and steel? Does stainless alleviate it?

My winter woes are of a different sort. It was in the mid-60's today, but I was replacing parts. I had to swap out the magnesium fairing mount on my xb9r. I was really itching to ride as I haven't ridden the bike yet (got it a few weeks ago). Doesn't matter since I have no helmet, no insurance, no plate, no inspection, no license, etc. Hey, at least I have the bike.

If you are using Stainless, make sure you use never seize. Stainless is soft, and the heads strip out very easily.

In my reckoning snow machines and sailboats have similar afflictions...the only time you can actually use them the weather's so crappy no one should be out in it. (-13 this morning, NW winds 15-20) Now where did I put that TV remote?

Actually the handling is tighter than the cbr, more like a R6.

It does suck to get geared up but it's too much fun. The heated handgrips are awesome, keep thinking I'll do that to my bike.

Florida is nice

But I'd rather have blizzards than humidity and hurricanes.

Frank,
I just got back from a week in Orlando visiting my parents. They go down there for a month or two every year.
My daughter's marching band was in the Outback Bowl so we ran over to watch that game. I would have preferred to see Iowa win in the Capital One Bowl, but the cards didn't work out right (also my Cyclones won last Tuesday).
I was considering bringing the bike down but decided not to mess with the trailer. It sure was tough leaving those temps to come back to the ice storms we had here.

I got to look at the XB12R today, only after I pried the garage door up. We had 1/4" - 1/2" of solid ice everywhere this morning!!

Saturday it rained here and then the temperature dropped big time so I spent today spending salt and bustin' ice.

At least it was sunny today...

Ftd: IhateyouIhateyouIhateyou....
Just kidding. It would be nice to live in a year-round riding country again, but then I'd have to put up with all those darn people (.75 people per sq mile in this part of the world). We've got ourselves a mid-winter Mexico trip planned and I've been researching renting a Harley in Cancun and taking it south to Bacalar where we're staying. It should be fun. Who knows, I may finally have a tale-section entry before it's over?

I've only ridden a snowmobile once, for about half an hour.... and I totalled it. Maybe they've improved since then?

Dirtbikes make waaay more sense for wintertime fun. : D

Cool fun!

Ralph,
While you were chipping ice I was sipping sweet tea in my shorts and t-shirt watching the Outback bowl in the nose-bleed section.
When I got home the next day I slid off my driveway into the front yard as I pulled in.
