Looking for a commercially available paint stripper that won't damage aluminum. Too many tight spots to sand down bare. Also would prefer something that won't kill you with the vapors or blow up the garage. I'd appreciate any ideas you have. Thanks. Also, I don't want to sandblast it either.

kleen-strip aircraft works OK. they have another paint on jelly that works well. I still had to hit some parts of the frame with 600/1000/2000 grit to get all the paint off. I needed to use 220 on the swingarm, the aluminum on that is very porous looking...

I used a liquid gel like stripper called zip strip. I used it on the frame, swingarm, and primary cover before sanding for polishing. This stuff is relatively fume free and does not burn your skin if you get any one you like that aircraft stripper does. The XB paint is tough stuff though and it takes 3 to 4 applications to get all the paint removed.

Carefull with the stripper. I once was using it and accidently wiped my nose without know there was a little bit on my hand. At least I was smart enought to have a water hose nearby.

brush on gell stripper. use a brass wire brush to apply.

it's going to require some serious sanding still. those xb frames are half primer/filler. especially the cast parts and the weld seams.

The frame on the XB, at least on mine, was really pretty smooth. The frame was, by far, the easiest part to polish. The swingarm is a different story though. It is really rough under the paint. The engine cases are not too bad, just a lot of little hard to get to areas. The hardest thing to remove the coating from was the heel guards. They appeared to be anodized.

Outie says...

It is always nice to ride with Bomber when he does his carburetor maintenance on the side of the road. It provides an extra break and some educational conversation.

Additionally, it insures that you will be in the lead as he is constantly fiddling with the carb and yelling "Hey Wild Bill, Wait for Me!"

Trust me, when he finally finishes fiddling with the thing he really is a formidable force to be dealt with in the twisties. That's the real reason I like riding with him so much.

Rek...Is Bombers way of calling me brother. Actually is spelled Br'er in Websters. Outie is his contraction of my username. Hope that clears the fog.

Just read your post about the weather in your neck of the woods. Wow, and I thought it was cold here.

Merry Christmas and best wishes for Global Warming in 2005.
