Yea it needs some detail work, but think of the possibilities! You know 124"+ motors ,hold on tight! I think it was a one off project.

Vr1203, I think it is way cool. But I gotta agree with Dino, that front fender looks like crap. I'd run without before using that fender.

Dual discs up front?

Well the search maybe over tomorrow. Xmas present to myself, a 78 sr500 that has already been cafe racerized... well started anyways.
Can't wait. See it tomorrow and hopefully its good to go.

I definitely will. I am picking it up monday and hopefully will be somewhere near someone with a digital camera. Bought the girlfriend a watch instead of a digi camera for xmas.
Definitly need to start a sr500 thread though cause I am going to have a ton of questions. Can't wait.

Well no camera sorry guys. Picked it up and brought it home. went to fire it up, and nada. damn. Well he said the electrics were still in need of redoing. and a couple other things. So I took apart the head lamp and got under the seat and it's a mess of unplugged and messed up plugged together wires. Anyone have any ideas of an electrical system that replaces the stock one. I figure I am going to have to rerun every wire anyways, so might as well upgrade to the 21st century. Also am probably going to need to replace the turn signal light switch housing, couse the buttons are broken etc. Was there ever a kill switch on the sr500?
Anyways, winter project started.

Oconnor,look at this auction for wiring--and they did have a kill switch on right switch housing.I had an SR-500 back in the day also.

roadthing and others with projects:
What are you guys using for electronics? My wire harness is full of crimps and recrimps and old stiff wires. So since there are only about 25 wires I was going to just make my own harness. But then I was thinking about replacing the ignition with something better. Does that BOYER-BRANSDEN kit work any good. I am looking for something that will fit my sr500 and replace everything between the battery and the spark plug.

I have a feeling that to replace the hard parts as well ( the wiring going into them as well is shot, and so are most of the connectors, brittle plastic) its going to cost me quite a bit of money, so for 350 bucks I could get something aftermarket. but would only go that route if it replaced all the old crap.

Oconnor: On the Brit bikes, I make up my own harness 'cause the wiring is so simple (no turn signals, e-start, relays, etc.) and cover the whole thing with shrink tubing. Nortons, Triumphs, BSA's all wire the same way (Positive Earth).

The Boyer unit works great, but requires that you run a battery. If you stick with points, you can deep-six the battery and run a capacitor. I've done 'em both ways. For a bike that doesn't see much use, the capacitor is a great set-up because you don't have to worry about the battery discharging.

I don't know how much of this will apply to your SR500. If it has an alternator or generator with a permanent magnet, the capacitor trick will probably work. I ran an old Kawasaki A7 off generator output alone, but that was a few years back...

I checked the prices to replace some of the ignition parts and it ran up quite a bill. I figure if i do end up going that route I can build a harness out of molex and new wires. That would be the easy and cheap part.
Thanks for keeping your eyes out.
Are you guys planning any rides in the bay area soon. I can't spend all my time in the garage wrenching.

electrical parts for SRs are getting scarce as hen's teeth (sadly) -- luckily, except for the ignition and charging, there's nothing magical involved, so you could gen up your own loom (even the stators, a notoriously fickle part, failing at odd times for no know reason) can be reqound by the appropriate shop

One source for SR500 parts is Thumper Stuff. Phone is 360-563-0376 or go to www.thumperstuff.com. They sell the Boyer ignition unit if your CDI box is fried. Make your own wiring harness using quality connectors, solder joints and heat shrink and you'll have a more reliable and neater installation.

I have a factory service manual. If you need any info, drop me an e-mail.
