I'm thinking of getting a used one with 7,000 miles on it. How reliable are they? It's either that or a 91 FZR 600 with 7,000 miles on it. Advise appreciated.

Hmm, come to a Buell enthusiast board & ask for which bike to purchase & the choices you give are an 03 XB & a most likely beat to death 91 FZR. Which bike do you think the members here will suggest to get??????????

Think about it.

Or just consider this a useless response to your question because I really love seeing my own words in print on the internet. I often don't stop to think whether or not my useless comments are helpful or insulting; I just really like to see my own words on the screen. : )

I have just rolled over 10,000 miles on a 2003 XB9R with very few problems...it has never failed to start and only had one problem with a plug wire being rubbed through...a part that cost less than 4 dollars and not much time to fix.

If you tend to want to work on your own bikes I find the Buells are easier to work on as they are simpler machines.

Consider also the uniqueness factor of the bike as it is pretty different from any other I have every ridden...both visually and emotionally.

My 03 XB9R has well over 20,000 on it with no probs until a few days ago. It has an oil leak on the front rocker box, but that's a cheap fix. Buy the Buell and enjoy!

BTW: Welcome to Buell and the BadWeb.

>>>How reliable are they?

I am proud and pleased to say the Buell XB's are one of the MOST reliable motorcycles made...PERIOD.

I do not know yet but expect to soon be able to say THE most reliable motorcycle made.

Do some checking, challenge, ask and get the info.

You'll enjoy the Buell.

I own both a Buell XB9SX and a 93 FZR 600. The FZR is a decent starting bike. Only complaint with it is mine leaks oil like crazy to the point where I have to tear the engine down to get to the gaskets in some places.

The Buell has 2000 miles on it with 0 problems and is waaaaaaaay more fun to ride than the FZR ever was.

2003 XB9SL, 12,800 miles, one small oil leak at the oil cooler line. Tough machine, absolute blast to ride. I'll own many bikes, but there will ALWAYS be a Buell in my garage. Get the Buell and have fun.

My old tube frame has been pretty reliable!!!!

After the recalls were completed I really have only lost a stator and that was up around 45,000km.

I don't consider minor leaks, tires, brakes and disposable items as a reliability problem. They are all maintenance issues.

If you don't do your maintenance your going to have problems.

Before I bought my first Buell S2, I owned a 1993 FZR600. Now on my 3rd Buell I love my XB9R and the FZR is long gone. The FZR handled like a brick in the corners. The Buells have felt like feathers and very forgiving. So long as you have a dealer where you can get parts, that is pretty much what dictated my choices. Parts are cheaper for the Buell, from the dealer than the FZR.

THere is just a wow and cool factor to the Buell that lasts much longer than any FZR. ALso no valve adjustments on the Buell unlike the FZR.

THe fat rear tire of the Buell is pretty neat unlike the SKINNY rear tires on the FZR.

Lastly in the summer the FZR threw lots of heat up to the handlebars and made around town riding uncomfortable.
My old 1993 FZR600

THis is what the bike looked like after I installed a YZF rear swingarm & tire on the bike. That is a TZ250 tail on it too.

I owned a 98 FZR 600 before I bought my Buell. The Buell is 100% more fun, cooler looking and cooler sounding and I think quicker. I'll never go back to an in-line four after my experiences on the Buell. I should never say never bit I have zero interest in in-line fours now. Now, a Triumph triple is a different questions. I think those are very cool engines and I'm leaning towards the new ST as my Sport Touring mule.

I don't want to speak for Blake here. But if I had to guess, it's because you radiate sarcasm in your response. If you don't have anything constructive to say to a potentially new Beuller, their interests may be better served if you simply kept your comments to yourself.

Think about it.

My first bike was an 1990 FZR 600 that I picked up whenever I was in the Army ... I gotta say it was loads of fun. It did however, have a voracious appetite for oil. The skinny back tire bugged me out in the rain and when the forks would start to go (which was about every year and a 1/2) the damn thing turned into a punishing jackhammer to ride. All in all the my 2KM2 with 16,000 has had a rockerbox leak and a dead speedo sensor...and thats it. Easy to work on, fun to ride. Oh yeah and Colorado area Yamaha dealers and service are hands down the most incompetent gang of idiots to pick up a wrench.

How about everyone just let Dyna be?
As far as I am concerned he has been bearable lately and at times civil.

However, if you poke and prod am I positive he will bite back.
We all know he is a Buell enthusiast, and questioning his intentions is a sure way to get the snowball rolling!

Pcmodeler...
Get the Buell!!!
It has more soul than Motown and I promise it will provide more smiles per mile.

Get the FZR. Only 7,000 miles on a 14 year old bike? The transmission and clutch are probably toast and the wheel bearings are likely seized. It's a great bargain! I'd also suggest a pickup truck and some tiedowns.

Now that's sarcasm!

We all know that Dyna is a Buell enthusiast.
I also think that is a valid point he made.
Of course the majority of us are going to tell PC to get the Buell! Just like if he went to a FZR site, they would vote for the Yammie.

PC, ride both bikes if you can get the chance. That will make the choice perfectly clear for you.

Well Put Dave!

Of course, you know what's gonna happen.. He'll ride the FZ and get a little grin for pure saddle time.. Then PC'll get on the Buell, ride it and then turn to the FZr seller and..

That Buell will add another to the fold..

Later,

10,000 miles and only a small relay issue, easily solved, oh yeah, I RIDE HARD ALL THE TIME! My bike is put through the test just about every ride and nothing has broke that was not my fault.

I bought mine used with 3600 miles on the odometer. Things that have failed: rear wheel bearing (black seal, not orange), rear taillight bulb. Only things I have replaced are maintenance items: oil, filter, tires, brake pads, belt. Forgot to mention I also replaced front brake rotor.

Wow, thank you Buell...!

I purchased my first Buell (XB9R) back at the beginning of October and absolutely love it. I wasn't planning on buying one until the spring but got an excellent deal, oh by the way, I was planning on buying a XB12S originally. I believe I had done my homework in deciding what bike I wanted I just hadn't test drove one yet, but then I found a XB9R deal I couldn't turn down. I now have just under 1000 miles and haven't had any problems except that hic-cup everyone talks about (only twice and with a cold engine). I love the bike and am glad I did my homework and decided on a Buell.

To me the question is kinda odd to even be asked on a site like this. Who is going to tell the guy to pass up the Buell???????????

I did! Of course I did it sarcastically.

On a Buell enthusiast site most people are going to say get the Buell. It's very reliable. But the truth is that there just isn't enough information to give an honest answer. What price is each of the bikes? What condition are they in? Which bike do you really want? And on and on. There is a lot of information missing.
