They're totally different animals. I'd vote for the XB12R, but obviously I'm biased. What are you looking for in a bike?

Take 'em for a demo ride and you'll know.

Ryan:

They ARE totally different. You don't mention your age, location or riding experience, which I assume is primarily dirt.

Be sure to keep an eye on my chronicles of the XB9SX I am currently playing with. If you are a dirt rider, the CityX would be a natural transition for you.

Also, if you want to drop me a note with contact information Badweb offers a free "Rider Evaluation Program". I can give you the test to see if youi are eligible for Buell ownership and if so, see which bike would be best for you.

Try them both, then pick one. While I haven't ridden the D650, and don't own a XB9, I can give you an opinion of my 99 M2 against my 04 Triumph.
After 6 years with the Buell, my eyes were beginning to wander for something new.
When the High RPM Bug bit me this summer, I went for a Triumph Speed 4. Brand new out the door for $6395! Not a bad deal, even when you include the new kitchen floor I had to buy to get the wife to say yes to another bike.
Comparing it with my M2 is a little tough. Both are great handling bikes. The little Triumph having a lighter touch. Brakes are great on both, with the Buell having better inital bite, but I think the 600 has better feel at the limit.
Seating position and fuel economy are where the Buell has a distinct advantage. The Speed 4 has high pegs and low bars. No different than most 600s. In fact, I just modified Lightning pegs to the Triumph for an extra inch of leg room.
Power is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. Both make good power. The Buell has loads of Torque, while the baby speed has loads of revs. Both sound great, one shakes the ground, the other makes your ears bleed.

Bottom line for me is, they are like my kids. I can't pick one over the other.

Peaky power does nothing for me. Huge torque is a riot and always entertaining. Even the XB9's are pretty boring IMO.
