I really hope I didn't just screw up pretty bad but I bought a new tank for my 96' S1 and it said it was for an S1... well I got to looking at the picture and it appears to be a tank of like an S3 or something because the tank's "horns" stick out a ways in the front and my tank doesn't even have those. I guess I just hadn't seen my bike for a while but please tell me it will still fit? Thanx Ben |

The "horns" sticking out means it's a mantra (I think that's the right word) tank. I know they changed the tank on the tube frames to the larger "mantra" tank at some point. I don't know if the tanks are interchangeable or not. Somebody who is more of an expert will have to answer. |

It will fit without any problems as long as it is not a tank for an injected bike. The S1W used the manta ray (i.e. S3) tank in '98. As long as the underside of the tank has the same protrusion on the bottom for mounting your petcock to, you will be set. 1313 |

I believe it is a "Manta" tank as in a Manta Ray and not a "Mantra" a mantra is a Hindu or Buddhist mystical formula of incantation according to Webster's. |

the new tank MAY foul your bars, greatly reducing your turning radius (and dinging the paint in the process), but the upside is that it holds nearly 5 gallons, which is good! AAAAAHHHhhhhhhohooooooooomommmmmmmmmmmmmm |

5 gallons my arse. Has anybody here gotten even close to 5 gallons out of their manta tank? But seriously....you'll be fine with the stock bars. If you had the smaller tank and Crossroads bars, you'll run into some steering troubles. Dennis |

About 4.2 gallons was the most I could ever wedge into my 2000 Cyclone Manta Ray tank. The overall tank range was not much more then my current XB (post break in). |

I believe I put 4.9 gallons into the M2 tank once. Of course it was hot out that day. |

I think the consistency of the wall thickness on those tanks varied *substantially*... |

The most I've ever put in my "mantra" tank is about 4.1 gallons. I always stop ASAP if I've had to switch to reserve. There always seems to be plenty of gas left but I'm not adventuresome enough to see how much it really holds. Hmmm, maybe I'll try a Hindu or Buddhist mystical formula of incantation next time. |

I once put 4.9 gallons in my 2000 M2 tank. That was filling it higher than I should have, and I put almost 40 miles on after I switched to reserve. Usually, I'll get gas within 10 miles after hitting reserve; and the bike typically takes 4 gallons or so. |

3.9 is the max on my Cyclone. "Rubber Lip" |

The S3 tank is supposedly bored to hold 5.5, Buell only claims 5.0 on the M2 cell. I put 4.7 in my tank regularly, I really don't like to buy gas so I push it to the limit. Stock tubular bars should clear okay, don't know how the S1 bars compare to M2, S1W and M2 have the same bar I believe (?) any of the aftermarket bits could give you trouble, depending on their spec (as my classified ad attests to). Just thought I'd jump in too... -Mike |

I get 4.7/8 into the Manta tank regularly -- I also cut about 1/2" off the reserve tube, as the conservative approach to reserve capacity did not agree with my desires ;-} of course, if I lived in Montana or Utah, I might value a close to 90 mile reserve capacity! |

I snipped off the tube in the M2 probably a bit too much last time I had the petcock out. Not sure how low the tank gets now but I can easily now hit 200 miles on the "main". Might have to pop it out again and lengthen the tube some. |
