LOL,

They were Court? I must have missed that amongst all the side issues. Still don't let them do all the work. Save some time and produce the proof you claim to have (I know I said I wasn't going to ask again but some days I can't help myself).

Travis,

No problem. I have a bad habit of going for the throat and pushing a point more than I should. I know it puts people off side but I have a reputaion for being a difficult bastard (not just here) to maintain.

Pete (never seen an M2 I didn't like but I'd still rather be riding my X1)

Court,

I agree the M2 is the best. It only takes from 1st to 3rd to put a smile on my face and smiling is best. I would not drive it to Tucson for the summer and the luggage space sucks but the Jeep in the garage wins almost all logical arguments and we are talking motorcycels here.

Luggage space sucks?!! See my Blake's Buelling camping packlist on the accessories page! All that without using a tankbag! I guess I should have packed the kitchen sink too? Oh yeah, I'd ride mine to Death Valley if I had the chance.

Pete: Welcome to the club... aholesanonymous. :)

Blake,

An arsehole I am but never anoynymous. I stand beside every statement I make long after I realise I am wrong :) There is a picture of me beside "curmudgeonly" in the dictionary.

I arrived at work a couple of days ago and in the operations log was written "stand clear, the miserable bastard is back (PMS=Petes mean streak)"
Rule by fear I always say :)

I guess I would sum up my position this way though. The best bike ever made has been, for me, the bike I'm currently throwing a leg over. Why else would I own it? I don't claim I can prove it and any one who does is full of S H I T. Bikes are a visceral experience; what appeals to one will not appeal to another. To claim "best ever Bike and I have proof" is silly. My R1 riding friend thinks his bike is the best ever made, a friend on a GS BMW thinks his is the best ever and I think my X1 fits the bill. We are all right. They are the bikes that suit us on the day and on that criteria they are the best.

Putting down other peoples bikes (it's souless etc) to try to elevate your own and create a mythology sucks. Their are damned few bad bikes made these days and the choice comes down to personal preference. You want an M2 then go out and buy one if it suits you. The other guy wants an R1. No problem. He's going to laugh in your face when you start bullshitting about character and soul and good for him. To him his R1 has more character and soul than your crappy M2 will ever have. Both of you are riding the best bike ever made, neither of you can prove it, but it doesn't matter because you have the bike that suits you both the best.

I seem to be meandering but what I'm trying to say is; Ride what you want but live and let live, Buells aint superior because of some intangible soul and Jap bikes aren't inferior because you feel they lack it.

There are enough people trying to shut us down (I was recently told I couldn't stay at a motel because I was on a bike, never mind random license checks by police that only occur when I'm on the bike ) without us dividing our already small group into us and them cliques. No matter what you ride you are OK by me (even if it is a poxy M2 :) ), it's the fact that you do ride that is important.

Damn,

As Usual I forgot something. I looked at your list Blake. I never carry a tool kit. I trust the X1 to get me home.

And you seemed to have missed the caviar and the petit fois gras. "Sausage"!!!! Are you mad. If the butler isn't on hand to serve the oysters kilpatrick I aint walking out the door. Camp if you must but at least do it in a modicum of comfort.

Pete: ROTFLOL. You're killing me!

Read on the GDB who/what I rode with this past weekend. I'll ride with ANYBODY! I let my new friend take the '97 M2 for a jaunt. He returned with a big grin on his face. Kept saying, "it feels like no other bike I've ridden", and that "it sounds so cool!" He also said he missed 2nd gear from 1st. I said (flexing my ankle muscles) "yeah, I guess I'm used to the tough shifting; I'd probably snap that little R1 shifter right off going for 2nd gear." We both laughed. I now have a local riding buddy who knows the good roads! I'll let you know if he offers me a ride on his brand new R1. He previously had an RC51, but it was stolen right out of his garage.

Beg, borrow or steal a ride on that R1 Blake. It wont convince you to give up Buells but I'm sure you will enjoy it. The power is intoxicating and the handling is an experience. But make sure you get it set up before you ride it. The first time I rode an R1 I was underwhelmed by the handling. I think "pig" is the term I used to describe it. Next time we tweaked the suspension before I rode it and the bike was transformed. They are very sensitive to set up.

On 95% of roads (real world riding anyone?) the R1 has the edge on my X1 but on very tight roads (the glorious Great Ocean Road) he cant stay with the X1. He puts it down to excess power making throttle control tricky but I put it down to him being a wimp.

He has ridden the X1 a few times but his opinion is not enthusiastic. "It has potential" is about as complimentary as it gets. Fat, twitchy, abysmal brakes and way too loud are the usual complaints. I agree to a certain extent. My bike is loud as hell with the pipe it has and it is overweight. RG250 rake and trail with way more horsepower and kg's are bound to make it twitchy. I've got used to the occasional tank slapper and vague front end when driving out of corners but I can see why it would be off putting. As for the brakes. With them I totaly agree. The front brake is good though not great but the rear brake is a peice of crap.

LOL, You want to build ankle muscles? Go ride a 70's or early 80's Laverda. If you wanted to find a gear you hauled in a clutch that felt like it needed both hands to engage and then kicked as hard as you could on the gear shift. What followed was either a broken ankle, a bike revving its nuts off in a false neutral or, on rare occasions, actualy finding the gear you were looking for. After that the X1's shifts are almost smooth.

Thank god the X1 doesn't have a kickstarter (remember them?). I've had my knee slammed back into the tank countless times by the kick back from lesser bikes. Staggering away from the bike with a knee that felt like it was broken, turning back to kick the bitch (so you could add a broken toe to the tally of wounds) was a standard part of the start up procedure.

Pete: I don't think the young feller trusts me with his brand new R1 yet. Hell, I'm not sure I trust me with his brand new R1. I'm sure I'll have a test ride sometime this summer though.

I've had 2 R1's get by me ( 2 seperate ocassions ) on a long straight, neither of which were able to leave me, one of which waved me by after futilely trying to leave me for 5 miles of moderately curvy roads (45-110 mph) and have chased down a couple others without too too much insanity. '00 M2. Before the rearsets.

They are Banke rearsets, they move the pegs about 4 inches up and 41/2 inches back, retaining the stock shift and brake hardware, except for a longer shift rod. The dig. cam needs a recharge, maybe I'll be able to get you a pic tomorrow. One problem w/ the Banke is excessive flex on the brake pedal bracket, I had to send the first one back, I bent the crap out of it I stomped so hard, and it still wouldn't lock the rear, he sent me their "update", but I still had to fabricate a reinforcement bracket, the rear is a little spongy feeling still, but it works now, and though it flexes a bit, it won't bend now. Other than that, the fit and appearance are great, and there's no peg scraping anymore, that's for sure!
