Just bought one for Dad yesterday. Very cool bike for relaxed riding! I thought my XB12 engine was almost identical to the Sporty's, at least on the outside, but noticed some differences right off the bat, such as oil filter placement. I guess Buell did quite a bit more than I thought with it... The XL 1200R handles much better than I expected, since I had always heard uncharitable remarks about Harleys from more sporting bikers. According to HD's info, this bike can only lean 31 degrees to either side, but I'll betcha more than half of the 600 rice riders down here never go past that anyway. It would be pretty funny, and maybe feasible if I pick the right victim, to blow past one of those sport bikes through a curve! Of course, Dad likes the bike so much I'll probably never get to ride it. I just wanted to say "Good job Harley," since the company sometimes takes a beating in here. | ||

I have an '04 XL883->1250 and I concur, it's a nice bike. | ||

Does the 1250 kit from a tube Buell bolt on? Are cams the same? Gotta stop thinking about these things.... | ||

Almost. A little trimming around the base area of the cylinder may be needed is all. Like the XB's, the pushrod cover base crowds it a little. 04-05 883's come with regular old "D" cams like domestic M2's and almost all 91-02 Sportys. 04-05 1200's come with "W" cams, same as the 96-03 1200S Sporster Sport. | ||

My wife has an 05 XL1200R. She loves it and I was pretty impressed when I rode it. Rubber mounting that engine was looong overdue. That bike may have the best performance and feature / value ratio of anything H-D makes. |
