I live 40 minutes from midtown manhattan and I have hundreds of miles of trails and logging roads to ride.
If "land Closure" is such a burning issue, why are 4-wheeler sales booming at an all-tinme high?
seems everybody and their brother has a 4-wheeler, and a pickemup to cart 'em around in.
With a dualsport, you don't need the picemup or the trailer, you simply ride public hiways to the trails. i think many folks weighing in here are translating 'dualsport' to 'dirtbike'. to me, an adventure tourer IS a dualsport, and the majority of americans would use a dualsport or an adventure tourer for shorter hops than, say, paris-dakar.
a 1200 dualsport really could BE an adventure tourer.

I posted something along those lines a couple of weeks back, If Cagiva can do one with a duc motor & Aprilia can do it with a big V not forgetting the Japs & BMW with a big Flat, Where's the problem?
Now where did I leave that angle grinder?

It's real...been around for years and shows up about annually with the advent of the "Buell Dual Sport Thread". I have the entire set of photos of it.

BcordB3...You want the bike in my avatar? Well, that makes two of us at least. LOL

It is the Super StreetTracker Glynn Kerr was commissioned to conceptualize for Harley Davidson and is based on the V-Rod engine.

When the BWB went to avatars, I figured I may as well post a pick of the bike I want rather than the X1 I have.

Hopefully one of these days HDI will decide to make something like it either with the V-Rod or the XB-12 engine. Until then, I heave no need for anymore HDI products.

looks like a 'buell engine someone has put into a frame", with the dual-downtubes in front and the *appearance* of a swingarm mounted directly to a frame....
the BMW r1200 GS motor is also "too bog for the dirt"
...dirt, strictly speaking, is NOT the sole purpose of a dualsport

The company that H-D bought was Armstrong. The military bike had a Rotax motor. I've got a bunch of pictures of it around here somewhere.

Jim Armstrong

Hmmm, how did I know that name off the top of my head?

The Armstrong was built heavy & strong for the needs of the military making it a bit uncompetitive for the civie market. Still I'd love to have one. Harley had that company for quite awhile but it's now defunct or sold off I think.
I thought someone had posted at one time that they had one?

I guess I missed the boat on "Dual sport" All the posts i've seen show more dirtbike style. I was thinking more along the lines of a BMW Alpine which I guess is more like an adventure tour. That would be cool.

So why don't you see more motorsickles used in the military? I'd think a mounted calvary on 500cc screamers would be one badass bunch'a dudes. Like Rat Patrol only better.

nope- motorcycles make no sense in the military, hence the sh*tcanning of the wla and indian (740 and 840? can't remmember- both hd and injun prototyped and maf'd. several shaft-drive boxers) back in the 40s.
very difficult to shoot from a moving bike, jeeps allowed soldiers to have a passenger to provide cover/suppression. bikes get mired up more easily than the GP (jeep) did, and if you get a flat with a jep, your other 4 wheels keep you moving.
bikes made little sense for our military.
my post is conce rning feasibility of an all-american dualsport, not another foreign mill to bring us back to the 70s with the sprints...

I may be wrong, but I always understood the original reason for motorcycles in the military was for courier (read: communications) purposes. If true, with the improved voice and computerized battle field communications, I can see where they are a thing of the past.

Concerning troop movement, there are now safer and quicker ways to get more soldiers in position. Additionally, I just can't imagine a flanking cavalry attack on motorcycles like they used to do on horseback. LOL

Now this is where I really could be wrong, but with the advancement in smaller attack vehicles (glorified dune buggies, quads, etc) I really don't imagine motorcycles being effective in either airborne or special forces missions. Although, I did recently read something about the airborne folding bicycle.

In conclusion, by merit of a motorcycles limited capacity and stability (read: risk) I just don't see any place for them on the modern battlefield. However, I love to see them in the War and Action Flicks!!!

The Air Force has taken to using ATVs to patrol the back side of beyond. I guess there aren't enough of us that can keep in on two wheels. Like everything else in the military, we work to the lowest common denominator. Of course tear-assing around, drifting around corners etc is fun on four wheels too.

the most efffective use of motorcycles in combat was in the B movie: "the losers"....
(in terms of using motorcycles in airborne missions, they ARE a smaller payload (per troop)to drop than a quad, but they are FAR more susceptible to 'drop damage'. bear in mind, as well, that 'special forces' is a title officially applied to a handful of army abn. div.s utilized primarily for advisory capacity, while 'special operations forces' can be applied to troops regardless of branch or basic objective. the overuse of the term 'special forces' is an unfortunate media slip....)

I still want to ride the Marine Corps Diesel Kaw....I think it would be pretty interesting.

On a slightly divergent tack... I have a '73 Suzi GT750 in my garage. Triple cyl, 2-stroke, disc brakes; a real snorty little bike. I've been thinking of making it into a "dual-sport" for my inspection rounds since I spend so much time on the gravel and the Buell don't much like that gravel stuff, especially the belt-drive part (5K miles out of the last one, before a rock got caught and punctured it).

Has anyone ever attempted morphing a streetbike into a dual-sport? The BMW RS-80 seems a good model to pattern after?

Well if Buell were to head into the Dual-Sport or Super Motard arena, they would need to relocate everything hanging underneath (such as exhaust). I do like the BMW GS as well as the KTM Adventure, it would be cool to see an American version in the group. Only the future will tell, although I like seeing what folks come up with on there own.

If we're going to have a dual sport version, can we have one with a V twin & sidecar with a driven wheel, Ural stylee.

Then all you gun addicts would have no problem mounting a mini-gun on the chair, you'd even have room for a couple of laws rockets as well.
It might be a bit excessive but you'd get respect from cagers.
