Anybody ever install or know about the baker 6 speed tranny for Sporty's & Buells. Not that I have the $$$ to install one, just some curiosity on if it works well and if things do smooth out in the 6th gear.

I have 3 of'em ... one in each race bike and another in my M2 street bike.

I have'em in the race bikes to take some of the pressure off the itty bitty rear sprockets and great big front sprockets you need to go land speed racing. Extremes in sprocket sizes cause their own set of problems.

On the street bike, 6th seems pretty tall to me. I've gone to a 26/61 final drive (stock is 27/61) and it's better, but still, I've gotta be going well over 70 before I can grab 6th and still be comfortably above the lugging-it range. But that motor's a little more high strung than most. And allowing me to go shorter on the final drive is always a good thing ; )

I like'em a lot. Currently building my wife a 90" motor for her S1 using one. I'll gear it 26/61 as well. Should oughta be a unicycle.

6 speed install
Yep, things do get less frantic, the Rpm's are lower, but with stock US gearing, you only even want 6th over 70 mph. Mileage goes up as does theoretical top speed.
I'm saving my "I quit smoking" money. If I can keep off the demon weed, ( and don't buy the Bostrom replica Suomy lid for $370 ) next year I can afford it.

I also have one in my S1. Same as Aaron, I've gone to a 26/61 final drive.
I personally think the 6 speed should be standard : )

Got one in the S-2 and love the sixth gear on the freeway.I went with S-1 gearing and still had an rpm drop at 80 mph--cruising speed on freeways(unless you are in Colorado, when we went to drop off the Buells from the dealership with Aaron, the average car was doing 90!!!!)

>>>But that motor's a little more high strung than most

That's an accurate statement.

I agree that 6th is too tall. With my motor set up as it is, 80 is as slow as I can go to stay above lugging. Final drive needs to be lower than 26/61. I also have the taller 1st and second gears they offer so lowering the final ratio will not make 1st useless. Baker sells a bolt on chain conversion. Mind you Baker uses the now discontinued for 10 years "low contact" gears except for 6th. There is some additional noise coming out of the tranny but it is not perceptible with the loud mufflers we generally use.

I talked with the Baker transmission folks, they advised me that their transmission won't fit/work in an XB!

Does anyone know of another 6 speed around that could be applied?

It will work in an XB, you just have to do some work to make it work. With no factory trapdoor setup for the XB's there is no quick tranny work. I suspect something is in the works for public consumption.
YMMV. ; )

How much better is the shifting action with a Baker unit? Is it just as clunky and miss prone as the stock tranny?

Not at all Dj. The forks and drum are made with more precision making shifting butter-like. My buddy says its as good as his 916. Detent is not pointy so it is prone to unstable equilibrium.

I have a Baker 6 spd in my S1W 88". I miss alot shifts at higher RPM. It shifts great in commute mode, but I have to Granny it big time at hi rpm.
Anyone else have similar problems?

Never missed a beat with shifting at 7000+ for 2 years at Bonneville.

Nope, me either. The only thing I've noticed is an occasional 3rd gear miss, but I've put it down to using the light spring, and it not holding the indent plate properly in the 3rd gear notch.

Nfo.., I had shifting problems too, when I used a smaller aluminum front pulley. I replaced it with a stock steel and it shifted much better. I think the heavier pulley's momentum helped.Maybe you have something else causing a problem?

Hoping for some more info on the spring, pawl settings, anything else that might help. I am running the stock front pulley...

Nf:

I have noticed that I must lift hard on the foot lever in order to engage a gear. Whenever I'm soft I miss. Part of it might be related to the rounded lobes of the the detent plate. Did you do the grinding required to the pawl arm?
