>>>So I stand ready to defend my country, even as an old man. I hope you all stand with me.

Anytime, anyplace.

For those of you who do not live in the Kingdom of New York, I urge you to protect and defend your right to "bear arms".

Moving to NYC from Kansas was an eye opener. I grew up used to being able to walk into the hardware store and buy a boxes of .22LR or .357 158gr. ammo. When my sons were young they learned to respect guns. I NEVER had to worry about them playing with them and our deal was "if you are ever at a friends and they get out their dad's gun, run like hell. If you ever want to go shoot, all I need is one hour notice" . Many of our great talks were behind a pickup truck, the tailgate strew with guns, taking turns plinking cans and talking. They learned the "pull the magazine out...is it unloaded?..BANG...off goes the one in the chamber lesson...over and over. Guns were not weapons so much as a "neat" facilitator of many father-son chats.

When I moved to New York I learned what the rest of the world is like..you dare not own a gun here. It requires that the gun be taken to the city and all sorts of paperwork done to get a CITY license. Bear in mind, this is not a concealed carry permit, just a license to OWN what, in my opinion, the United States Constitution GUARANTEES me the FREEDOM to own. NYC requires that you belong to a gun club (expensive in the land of $550,000 starter homes) and renew this process.

As a result all 15 of my personal guns stayed in Kansas and were relegated to a vault on Wanamaker Road. Someday, I suppose I'll go to the hassle to bring them but I'd urge you folks to protect and cherish your FREEDOM.

For the record, that's not a political rant, just the opinion of someone who was gunned down in what to this day remains the largest driveby shooting in America. It tended to cement my views on the personal fire arms as did Luby's in Forth Worth when innocent girl (who had a license to carry and didn't that day) watched for FIVE MINUTES and a fellow strode across the room and shot her parents, huddled with her behind an overturned table, to death before her eyes.

Sorry...quite a passionate subject with me.

FWIW, check out AIM surplus (http://www.aimsurplus.com/).

I really appreciate the history of tools (in this case they happen to be tools that fire projectiles). Some most interesting guns include a $75 bolt action mauser that was built in 1908 and still operates smooth as silk, and a Russian battle rifle ($65) that was built in 1946 (which has it's own sort of character, which has nothing to do with smooth).

Newfie, Rek, Rcket - Show me no disrespect for my beliefs and I'll show you no disrespect for yours. You folks really don't understand us and perhaps we, you. It's ok. God forbid your country should ever be attacked, over run, subjugated - you KNOW who has your back. It wouldn't be the first time. We ask nothing in return, and get it.

Steve:

Well said. I lnow Bill (Nef) and he's a thoughtful fellow who deserves to be heard. If I lived in Newfoundland I suspect I might think the same. It's land is gorgeous, it's people kind and it's streets clean (except perhaps for snow...like 37' of it).

You and I are in the bowels and shadows of New York City. Although the crime rate he is among (I think it is the lowest) the lowest per capita for cities >1M folks, we are none the less the potential victims of the "per capita" games when you have this many capitas.

I repsect the rights, culture and freedom to beleive what they may, of all my more than 10,000,000 neighbors.

But, never again in my lifetime, will ONE of the "per capitas" put me in a hospital with 98 holes in me, nor my sister in a comma for 3 days.

It's acutally quite simple. I know my priciples, the threshold of where I apply them (roughly at my front door) and how I apply them.

I like people who understand themselves, they seem to understand others better.

I also enjoy the diverse dicussion here and am beyond the point in my life where I must declare anyone right or wrong to listen to their views. Again, I suspect you and I have arrived similar places through similar journeys.

court- i'm with you on that, HOWEVER: in NY city you are allowed to own rifles and shotguns with no major paperwork.
I lived in the west Village (No, I'm straight) and had no problem toting my birding guns around, IN CASES. the law allows that, and even in NYC, you are permitted to keep and transport your rifles (non-autoloading/semis) and shotguns.
Funny thing 'bout the big apple- handguns are an issue there, but a nice, big stihl chainsaw acn be openly brandished on the subways. Man, That's a deterrent!

I don't mean any disrespect.

The thing I find hard to grasp is there are so many guns out there.

Court does make a very good point that per capita crime in New York is so much worse than any other place in the world.

I guess I have it lucky up here in the middle of nowhere, I know my kids are safe and won't be shot (intentionally or accidentially). Like I said before I feel safe walking anywhere at anytime, day or night on this island.

And just to show how little our capita is we roughly have 500,000 people living on this whole island!!!!

The day I have to carry any kind of a gun or anything else to protect myself is the day I have to reconsider where I live!!!

We can't all live there with you though, it's naive to believe that everyone everywhere will always be safe, at least here in the states !! It's a nice thought to believe you will never travel or be in a place though where you won't always be as safe as you are there, but not realistic in my opinion !!

I have never owned a gun, wouldn't know how to shoot one if I had it, the ex had lots though, duh Arkansas !!

But if I'm ever in danger I sure hope someone there on my side will have one and know how to use it !!

How can you watch the news and read the papers everyday to see innocent people killed everyday and not worry sometimes !! I avoid certain situations being a girl, but sometimes would just be nice to not have to and know I could defend myself.

For those never in that situation great, but I'm not naive and believe that if I never carry a gun and live in the right place I wouldn't ever in my life be in a situation where a gun might not come in handy !!

Just my 2 cents worth !!

CJ : )

No, no no....I said (or at least MEANT) that New York City is one of the LOWEST in the world and the lowest in the United States for cities over 1M folks.

I have yet to walk anywhere here that concerns me. Now, before you stiff, let me say that there are places (try 13th and Parallel in Kansas City,KS) that you just don't wander at the wrong time of day.

New York is a clean, safe place a fact not unrelated to the MILLIONS of tourists that come here. The city is fun, safe and clean...trafffic, well that's a differing matter. I spent two hours getting from 23rd to 52nd on 8th Avenue last night headed to a dinner for a retiring Business Agent at the Hilton.

When I moved here...I felt robbed...like "where are the muggers? After watching a documentary on AE I understood. Vickie worked near 42nd and Madison 15 years ago and, in those days, Gotham was the incarnation of most the US's picture.

Rudy stopped that crap in it's tracks. Life sentences for pan-handlers?. . . fine by me. The subway is now cleaner than Disney's people mover and darn near as safe. You are just about as likely to go down in a commercial airliner as get mugged on the NYC Subway.

With regards to the shotgun thing....it may be true in theory, but as a RESIDENT and DAILY OCCUPANT of NEW YORK CITY, I'd not reccomend walking through the city carrying an 870 with a 20" barrel or Ruger 10/22. But, hey....that's just me.

Sometimes I think the world doesn't understand Americans. We're considered reckless trigger happy cowboys because we have firearms. What do ya'll think of the Swiss? The Swiss government gives their citizens machine guns and ammo.

What has happened to the unarmed around the world in the past 20 years? Would there have been ethnic cleansing in Dafaur, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Serbia if the population was armed similar to the United States? The police/military here can't just go door to door rounding up Jews, Blacks, Hispanics or Rednecks and shoot them in the streets. That can't happen here because we are armed.

I have 12...from .22LR to .50BMG. One for any situation. If I could, I'd have some full auto's and an AR-15 pistol as well.

Ruger 22/45
Ruger P89
Ruger 1022
Ruger Mini-14 bullpup
Colt 1991A1
Colt H-Bar (Post-ban AR-15)
S&W 625 home defense pistol(converted to double action only)
S&W 626 PowerPort
Remington 870 "tactical"
Remington 700 target
Wilson Carbine .45
Watson's Weapons .50BMG

All stoutly built to my liking and my favorite things aside from my bike.

The government shouldn't regulate what small arms we own. If the military and criminals can have it, so should we.

I love the flash suppressor ban especially...compensators work much better anyway.

Not to go off on a rant, but:
Until the day comes when the world is a fluffy pink place with no 'bad guys', I will continue to be the first, last and only line of defense for my children, my wife and my motorcycle. Sure, we live in an ordered society (comparatively speaking) with government and police and all that and we could really be a whole lot worse off, however, I choose to put my survival in my own hands and not rely on anyone else. So, to the a**hole who tries to threaten that, I ask you, "is it worth your life?"

Rick- Those .50 BMG's are a kick in the pants to shoot, i am very jealous. Picture if you got one please.

Firebolt- desert eagle 44mag thats nickel plated with pearl hand grips. Uh, i think my soul hurts a little.

I would like to point out that most of us dont buy a gun, or at least all of our guns with self defence in mind. We buy them because they are fun to shoot. We enjoy going out to the range and using or weapons in a safe and fun manner. I know I havent bought any of my guns thinking, "Well, if one day the government goes nuts, I can use this. I'll take 2!"

Firebolt - I used to use one of those at work. : )

Trevor - I'm like you. As soon as the NYC Police can demonstrate to me (and I am a huge admirer of them) that they can arrive at my house within the time a bad guy can make if from the front door to the 2nd floor, I'll maintain the ability to handle things until they arrive as a continuing service to them.

Good news is that you'd have to have a death wish to committ a crime in my neighborhood. Two years ago the FBI had a major mob bust and we lost 24 neighbors. The newspapers laying in the driveways made it look like the world had gone on vacation. We've had one crime since I lived here. A contractor and his wife both committed suicide. They were both found down the street with their arms duct taped to their chairs and one .22 each in the back of the head.

Yeah the "tow truck operator" across the street that leaves with bodyguards every morning ( a black Hummer in front and one behind) would be a bad guy to rob, I'm thinking.

There is no crime control like healthy deterance.

court- i agree 100%. it's danged near impossible to tote a scattergun round the apple, esp. since 9/11.
anyone who thinks NY is some sort of crime capitol is not only severely culturally deprved and deluded, but they've also clearly spent little time in the big apple. excellent city, i feel safe as he ll there day or night.
some of my good friends up here are city cops (the OC is the farthest distance away from the city that a city cop or fireman is allowed to live, so it's inundated with 'em, which is wierd for us grimy 1%er types) and they'll tell you how low-crime NYC is. seriously- court's dead-on, man. you want crime? visit any city in eastern euroope, esp. anywhere in russia, albania's insane, bucharest is full of dangerous gypsies (used my CZ85 on one or two) and section sof warsaw can be scary.
In the states LA is still chock full of crime, East Palo Alto was #1 for homicides in (approx) 1995.... just across 101 from one of bill gates' most impressive houses, spitting distance form stanford university and posh, bohemian palo alto(!)
san jose has scary crank-dealer areas, where they'll jack you up just to dig on the cool splatters your blood makes on the asphalt and leave yoyr wallet intact.
even venice beach got scary nocturnally.
Atlantic City, NJ (outside of the casino areas) is a violent cesspooool, in much the way the periphery of rio de janiero is a violence capitol of the world, a true police state where a gringo can get yanked, stripped to the bone, run through a woodchipper and fed to the pit bulls before his date notices he's missing.
yeah, don't even try to seat NYC in THAT section, boys. we're in the bleachers, away from the bloody field in world and even national terms.

btw- court: get a nys hunting license and carry pump 12 w/an 18.5" barrel with a small box o' #6 in a case. don't be cute and use a paratrooper stock or a pistol grip, keep the buttstock...well.... 'stock' and whenever you get sangged (and hopefully not tagged) tell 'em you're on your way home from visiting me after a day of crow shooting (open). i know it's not gonna keep 'em from stopping you, but what used to happen with me was after a couple stops the cop would talk shhoting and i'd invite him up. ya get a nice pba card (the kind with a shield# and signature) and noone gives you any grief at all, after that!
