ARRRGH! Stop calling it censorship! If anyone wants a forum where they can post whatever the hell they want at any time, I will be more then happy to help them register a domain, buy web space, and establish a working board or blog.

And like anything, if a friend of mine starts saying cracking jokes about another person, I will probably end the conversation. If a buddy starts cracking jokes about themselves, I'll probably have a good laugh.

What is censorship?

(Excerpted from Marjorie Heins' Sex, Sin and Blasphemy: A Guide to America's Censorship Wars [New Press, 1993], pp. 3-4.)

According to Webster's Dictionary, to "censor" means "to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable." The word "censor" originated in ancient Rome, where the government appointed officials to take the census and to supervise public morals. Censorship happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their political or moral values on others by suppressing words, images, or ideas that they find offensive.

OK stealth. So you have no issue with me putting bumper stickers on your car with all my favorite scripture quotes, right?

How bout.. "Like a gold ring in a pigs nose is a beautiful woman without discretion".

Like I said, if you want web space and a domain registered, I will be happy to help *you* set it up. I've been through the process before, and can point you to reliable hosting and domain registrars at fair prices.

Do I leave my car in public places while encouraging people to put bumper stickers on it then remove the ones I deem offensive?

Did I state that I have a problem with the policy?

I am extremely familiar with domain registration and web hosting and although I appreciate the offer, I will not need your assistance in matters concerning these particular topics.

I will however interject the occasional opinion or provide additional insight when I feel appropriate.

Understood. My apologies if I implied you have a problem with the policy, were incapable of securing web hosting, or felt that you are not welcome to provide opinion or insight. Obviously, none of that is the case.

I hope everyone interjects opinion and insight when appropriate, and I hope all reflect before hitting the post button to ask themselves if they are trying to satisfy themselves, or if they are trying to contribute the greater benefit of a special community as a whole.

reep- i don't know you, i'm new as h ell here, but you owe nobody any explanation. i have no doubt that you're aware of that already, but, jeeez- tell 'em to find another site if your active quality control is an issue. if i say something inflamatory and you delete it- 'oh well'...i'll realize that when i was here, visiting YOUR house, i broke a rule. period. pretty easy to live with if you ask me. i'll rememeber not to break that rule next time, here in YOUR house which you share with blake and these other cats, and i'll be happy to continue participating. stop explaining yourself. farg em.
i don't remember anyone selling me stock or interest in your nice site, so i'm not about to criticize it. just like if any of you were in my house and screwed up, i'd ask you to knock it off and we'd move on.
i've been on the forum at american thunderbike for a couple years and scott edits very very little, and censors virtually nothing, and that is the best way for his excellent site to run
you guys need to censor some of the divisive fllamebait here, eso. being this is more of an international site and many posters here aren't accustomed to our peculiarly american social complexites, so some editing is warranted. excellent site, here, keep it up

It also sucks to see how sterile the BadWeB moderator stance is spoken........when in fact the practice is entirely different.

For as long as I can remember, and that's nearly as long as the BadWeB's been around, anything goes, except profanity (to a degree) and no pubic hair. The practice of posting serves us all well in the end. Making rules for rules sake helps not a single one of us, but it does show the nanny state of the BadweB in recent times.

This crap about censorship is much spouted by moderators these days, when in fact it is the people of the BadWeB that do a far better job of moderating than any moderator(s) outcry ever did or will.

This place needs nothing more than to thrive on what it's always had truck loads of. Character, or character of the people. More recently it's become so politically charged one cannot consider it being anything other than a commercial for Bush or Buell, and damn you if you dare speak ill of either, or not speak of anything other than either, as your character will be assassinated.

Leave it alone, and we'll all get along fine, like we always have done. In fact, the least amount of moderators the better. Less we all live in fear of the moderators taking themselves, and their position, far to seriously, which is what's happening right now.

I hope we have to moderate very little.

My, PERSONAL, position....and yes, I know Rocket is tired of hearing it, is that if I wouldn't leave it on my coffee table at home or in the lobby at work, take it somewhere else.

Simple?

I think so.

Not at all Court. I'm tired of hearing you talk about, rather than to me. That said, your continued ideology is not proven amongst other moderators. Some seem more willing to censor based on their own likings rather than anything remotely offensive posted on the BadWeB demanding their attention.

Anyway, I'm not engaging in this time old disagreement other than to say the BadweB isn't as secular as I believe it should. Most who understand this comment also understand why, and they further understand the misgivings that brings and has brought to the BadWeB.

Let's talk guns and roses. I'm always up for a good ole fist fight these days

I agree, growing pains I submit.

There are several new moderators. They are eager to serve as responsible custodians to keep this a pleasant place for all. You are correct that the pendulum has swung toward a quicker trigger of late.

Such are the cycles of life and things.

Having been about this sort of stuff for some time...face it Denise and I are the really "Old Timers" of motorcycle bulletin boards and if I EVER use the word "old" in referring to her no one here will be tough enough to survive the resultant beating) I'm irrevocable convinced that cooler minds will see the pendulum back to center.

The new folks enjoy total trust and confidence from all the moderators.

Nuff said.....

The problem is translating humour between different cultures. I find all of these funny....

--------------------------------------------------

Sitting together on a train, travelling through the Swiss Alps, were a Kiwi, an Australian, a little old Greek lady, and a young blonde Swiss woman.

The train goes into a dark tunnel and a few seconds later there is the sound of a loud slap. When the train emerges from the tunnel, the Kiwi has a bright red hand Print on his cheek.

No one speaks.

The old lady thinks: That Kiwi must have groped the blonde in the dark, and she slapped his cheek.

The blonde thinks: That Kiwi must have tried to grope me in the dark, but missed and fondled the old lady. She slapped his cheek.

The Kiwi thinks: That Australian must have groped the blonde in the dark. She tried to slap him but missed and got me instead.

The Australian thinks: I can't wait for another tunnel, so I can smack that Kiwi again.

--------------------------------------------------

Sitting together on a train, travelling through the Swiss Alps, were a Yank, an Australian, a little old Greek lady, and a young blonde Swiss woman.

The train goes into a dark tunnel and a few seconds later there is the sound of a loud slap. When the train emerges from the tunnel, the Yank has a bright red hand Print on his cheek.

No one speaks.

The old lady thinks: That Yank must have groped the blonde in the dark, and she slapped his cheek.

The Yank thinks: That Australian must have groped the blonde in the dark. She tried to slap him but missed and got me instead.

The Australian thinks: I can't wait for another tunnel, so I can smack that Yank again.

--------------------------------------------------

Sitting together on a train, travelling through the Swiss Alps, were a Kraut, an Australian, a little old Greek lady, and a young blonde Swiss
woman.

The train goes into a dark tunnel and a few seconds later there is the sound of a loud slap. When the train emerges from the tunnel, the Kraut has a bright red hand Print on his cheek.

No one speaks.

The old lady thinks: That Kraut must have groped the blonde in the dark, and she slapped his cheek.

The blonde thinks: That Kraut must have tried to grope me in the dark, but missed and fondled the old lady. She slapped his cheek.

The Kraut thinks: That Australian must have groped the blonde in the dark. She tried to slap him but missed and got me instead.

The Australian thinks: I can't wait for another tunnel, so I can smack that Kraut again.

--------------------------------------------------

A New Zealander would also find it funny.
An American would probably not find that much humour in it, whilst the German (I think) would be offended.
(In fact the only people I've found that understand Australian humour properly, are the Irish. : ))

Different strokes for different folks. I really had to learn to moderate my posts on the internet to take that into account.

ALL humour is at someones expense, so you're going to offend somebody whatever, just gotta hope they're big enough to accept it in a spirit of fun.

Me I've got Rhino hide, developed over a whole lifetime of having the p**s taken, so I'm the 1st to laugh, even if it's at my expense.

But remember, if you wan't to dish it out, you've got to take it too!

Most of us on here know the limits instinctively and stay around them, some push the limits & that's ok too as long as it's not way over the top.

Moderators have to remember not only that we're all different, with different ways of expressing ourselves, but that this is a global thing & perceptions vary too.

I agree with Court that the trigger has gotten much quicker lately (is this the famous " shoot first & ask questions later" policy?)& hope he's right that the pendulum will swing back.

Meantime lets all be cool, relax & read a quote from our cult spiritual leader.

"I am always a firm believer in not taking things so seriously and live......your only here once lets make it a good one."
