I've found that the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) of killer stereo gear is just about nil.

Sadly, the speakers came without the saleswoman.
Maggies
Anybody else find this low WAF to be the case or am I being unfairly singled out?

Maybe those two were seperated at birth and we just stupidly blundered into their evil clutches and now we're doomed!
Any other tales of woe (with photographic documentation, please) or is it just us two?

I owned a set of Magnepans MG3.3,
A Beard P100S MKII vacuum tube power amp
Trilogy vacuum tube pre-amp
Luxman D105u CD player (tubes as well!)
Siltec wires (pure silver, interlinks were silver w/ gold).

Had to sell it all 'cos I needed money.

Magnepans went to my dad. He's going deaf and is selling his stuff so I just might get my babies back. Prob is, I'm spending all my money on my bike and have no money for new amps etc ...

My bike is about the only thing I'm "allowed" to spend money on...and even that takes convincing...like how much a part is "needed."

Still, it comes second to the bills and then her truck

I just bought the rear surround speakers that match the rest of my stuff for $15 on eBay a couple weeks ago. Does that count?

Well, right now, it's just an HK AVR reciever used for a preamp. Used to use a B&K preamp/processor, but it kinda died on me.

The amp is a Coda-Continuum 4.3.2 multichannel amp. Running the ETs and the VMPS audio subwoofer(17HZ baby!) : )

I've got a AH! Tjoeb CD player(modified Marantz, using an EC88 tube stage, running NOS Seimens Tubes, circa 1968).

It's not the BEST system by any means. But like my bikes, I've purchased it slowly, and quite cheaply. Everything was at least 50% off MSRP. The speakers were dealer demos, the CD player was bought from a friend the amp was bought from a friend who runs Coda's Sales and Marketing department.

Ingemar,
Get those speakers back from pops - you can get less expensive components and upgrade at a later date, you know.
Steve,
I like those speakers; how do you like the built-in subs? Have you guys visited www.audioasylum.com? They have a Planar Board which you might find interesting. www.audiocircle.com is good as well and I did scare up a Buell owner on www.fmtunerinfo.com so ya just never know. You can just get lost for hours in those sites.

Steveford,
I used to be heavily involved with AA. I helped administer their IRC channel... Haven't been in to it much since the 'lil guy was born exactly 3 years(to the day) ago. Priorities changed I guess. And my A/V rack(home made out of extruded aluminum) looks SOOO much like a nice 'lil ladder now for a kid : )

Now, for the ETs. The integration of the built in 8" woofers is second to none(including Martin Logan IMHO). They crossover around 100HZ to the planar panels. And they realisticly reach down to 28HZ. For most music, the external VMPS sub isn't required. The VMPS sub is impressive for Home Theater however. I can literally shake the windows : )

It's VMPS's largest sub. Using 1 15" active woofer, 1 12" active woofer, and a 15" passive downfiring radiator.

The topless woman with the S1 was originally posted on BadWeb in the R-Rated section so I was expecting, "What's with the old picture?" but the wardrobe malfunction is now gone.
Steve, Junior and I share the same birthday so happy b'day from me. 45 years old today but luckily, I'm very immature for my age!
I would love to hear those speakers but I'm afraid that I'd want a set in the worst way and those scream really low WAF as in your stuff is out on the curb.
Am about to get my old Dual 701 going again with help from www.turntablebasics.com and a fellow in Brooklyn who has generously offered to walk me through repairing the tonearm and adding the cueing fluid.
Then I can see how this HHB CDR830 BurnIt Plus does with transferring the albums to CDs. I was going to just put everything onto new cassette tapes but it looks like they're going the way of the 8 track.
Now if I could just get this DVD rewinder to work, curse this newfangled junk...

Happy bday to you too Steve.

Why would you want to record your albums to cd? The frequency range of a cd is so much lower and the AD/DA conversion generally doesn't do much good to the dynamics of the music either.

If its to preserve your albums, I would still use analog tapes on a good (Nakamichi or similar) tape deck. Tapes are gonna be available for some time.

I regret to this day I once dumped all my old records in favor of cd's. I trashed them, can you believe that?

This is a good discussion and I have a few questions that I *should* know and don't.

1)I've got an entire stack of NAD rack mounted crud sitting here. I an quite aware that it is out dated. QUESTION: what would I need to use one of the CD players in my desktop (I have 2) for great audio?

I am assuming I can get a pre-amp and power amp and perhaps some sort of an equalizer. How do I connect it to the sound card? Do I need a special sound card?

2) Reccomendations for speakers. Currently I am using set of Bose 301's for the basement and have my desk surrounded by Alesis Mk2 near field monitors.

I'm betting someone here is a total gearhead in this department.

P.S.- I'll likely be routing a Eurorack 16 channel mixer into the entire mess but I'll bet I can handle that if I get the right equipment.

P.S.S. - can I route a turntable into my soundcard? I didn't save all my vinyl but the good part was that most of them I played only once to record them onto cassette and the ones I have are pristine...well, except the heavily worn Beatles, Led Zepplin and totally toasted Something/Anything. The BEST (in terms of absence of surface noise) had to be "Apprentice in a Musical Workshop" by Dan Loggins (no relation to Kenny). The album contained the single hit "Please Come To Boston" which was likely the worst song on the album (meaning that the album, was in my opinion, absolutely musically superior in terms of creativity and artistty). It interests me that I can buy The Archies on CD, but the Dan Loggins album was never created on CD.

P.S.S. - thanks for removing the picture.

I have no idea. There are a lot of jems that haven't been converted yet. There are also some incredible finds that have made it onto CD as well. I found a CD of Scott Joplin piano rags, played by the composer, in a supermarket bargain bin for $7.00 a couple of years ago. I still keep hoping to find Buddy Rich live at the J.A.T.P with the historical drum battle between Rich and Gene Krupa on CD.

One of our next steps were going to be vinyl. The wife has been collecting records from used records stores since she was 16. We have a good thousand of 'em right now. And nuttin' to play 'em on. I was thinking about makin' one of the teres turntables.

http://www.teresaudio.com/

I was early in the planing stages of the teres asked to make a mold to make the base of the 1st teres. Out of synthetic granite no less....

Just kinda ran out of ambition I guess.

An electrical engineer friend of mine, was going to make us a couple of tubed phono stages,, while I was going to machine up a chassis for 'em. Again, most likely just ran out of ambition on both our parts : )

Court, MLs are VERY nice speakers. But on all but the *VERY* expensive hybrids, the integration between the woofer and planar section isn't as good as it could be IMHO. Still a very nice speaker. Just think the ETs are better : )

Steve,
Yeah, if you listen to the ETs, you'll definately want a pair : ) I'm lucky, the wife has a very low WAF. : )

Court, while looking at CD players to add to your old NAD system. I'd definately look at NAD, but for the $, look at one of the new AH! Tjoeb CD players. Best bang for the $ IMHO.

Court, I've got an old NAD 3020 & it still sounds absolutely lovely, the only problem I have is that it was given to me by an old friend who lives in Austin & is therefore on 110 volt (not my friend, the amp.) so I have to run it on a transformer which adds an extra dimension to the system. The speakers are of the same vintage it's a 3D Acoustics set up, though the bass is getting a bit tired now.
I'm not particularly inclined to change as I don't have a good enough ear to tell the difference & I'd rather spend the money on other noisy toys.

I'm not a audiophile, but I like it. What I really dig is what makes it work. Somethings just can't be improved upon and in staying in that vein of thought you philes should check out the The new AX4B-533 Tube Motherboard -- not really new anymore, but oh so very cool. Can you say tonality?

Yea, tubes are 100 years old, but their sound is above and beyond anything else. It's just so cool.

Ingemar,
Threw your albums away? Say it ain't so, Moe. Mine have only been played once so I'm hoping that they came through years of storage okay. I'm going the CD route primarily for convenience and to have a new toy to play with!
Picked up 4 Phil Manzanera/Brian Eno/801 albums for 8 bucks to my door on e-bay so will use those as my A/B/C test pieces, I guess. Album, tape, CD and see if it matters to my ancient ears which have tinnitus.
Court,
I don't know much but I know what I like; I'm a Bob Carver and Magnepan fan and if you go the e-bay route, you can put together a really nice system for a reasonable sum. Electronics don't hold their value very well.
If Steve Mackey can't help you out with your questions, there's a few digital sections over on audioasylum and the members there will be happy to hook you up.
Cocobolo wood - does that bring back some fuzzy memories!
None of my stereo stuff is tube but my Marshall stacks all had tubes and did they ever scream. All of the transister amps just sounded like garbage. It has to be the same way with stereos, doesn't it? Uh oh...
