I know I've read the recommended procedure here several times, but dang if I can find it this morning. I managed to run my 2000 S3 out of gas Monday afternoon (engine finally died as I coasted into a gas station).

IIRC I was supposed to ride the bike at constant speed/throttle for a couple of minutes to let the computer recalibrate the fuel injection. I maintained ~3000 RPM for probably 5 minutes. Is that close enough?

I don't notice any problems, I just want to make sure I did it right.

put gas in : )

that procedure will let the computer remap. but so will running out of gas. they both have the same effect.

so just add gas and flog the crap out of it. then it will learn to run like you flog the crap out of it all the time.

I wish you had to push a button or something. I hate how my ignition remaps on my commute to work in the morning. then I runs like a pooch forevermore. : (

what a lousy situation.

Whodom...I recollect reading something about riding 10 minutes at 4,000 RPM.

Did it happen because you thought that you had 0.4 gallons more gas? That's what happened to me. Every time I filled up after getting the low fuel light I'd only be able to put in 4.6-4.7 gallons so I assumed the light was comiing on early. One day as I left work it came on and I figured "Hey, I've got 0.8 left, I can make it the 20 miles home."
I didn't quite make it to the station so now I figure I just have a 5 gallon tank.
Once in awhile mine also gets out of whack but doesn't smooth out until after I stop and then go again. I can tell because it runs a little rough and then the next time it is real smooth.

You did it correct by running it on a long strecth of road at 2500-3000 rpms. If you take it up to 4,000 as somebody else said it will not reset. As long as it is running correctly you are fine. You will definately know if the computer hasn't reset as it will run like total crap!!

other than running out of gas, is the FI computer otherwise always learning and adjusting? what goes on "inside the box"?

4000 rpm is open loop. you dont have to do anything real special, just ride the bike, with fuel in it, get it good and warmed up. ECM is pretty smart.

Thanks for the info guys. I had spent all weekend in the hospital with my Dad, got home mid-day Monday and decided to go for a short ride, which I had plenty of fuel for. Weather was gorgeous, and I soon found that every time I had a chance to take a backroad turn towards home, I took the opposite path. ~10 miles from last gas station, low fuel light comes on. I think "I'm sure there's a filling station up here in about 10 miles, I'll be alright". Get there, the little country store hasn't sold gas since it was $1.50/gallon. "Oh crap". Turn towards the next small town, ~15 miles away, hoping I'll see a station before I get there. By the time I hit the town limits, the S3 was sputtering and coughing, I was weaving side to side to get the last gas molecules into the pump, and it finally died. I coasted into the first station I saw with the clutch in and the engine dead. Tank held ~4.98 gallons. I figure I had VERY close to 0.4 gallons left when the light came on.

That's the second time in my life I've run out of gas, the first time ever on a bike, and the first time in ~20 years on anything.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP TO SELF: PAY ATTENTION TO TRIP ODOMETER!

I was going over a bride on my FZR while on reserve and wouldn't you know it, ran out of gas. Coasted down the bridge hoping to make it to the gas station up ahead only to run 200 feet from it. That little bike get heavy over time pushing it.

Same thing happened to me Sunday. The drill is to ride between 2,500 and 3,000 in 5th gear for a mile, I usually go 1.2 miles to make sure I don't have a rounding error
