The loose nut behind the handlebar caused me to kiss the pavement doing about 70 last night and thank heavens for my leathers - only one stich required on a pinky knuckle.
If I'd been doing sneakers/jeans/shirt/no helmet, I'd still be in the hospital or worse.
The moral of the storey is always dress for the crash and perhaps it's time to take the show to the racetrack!
Oh yes - the receptionist at the emergency room told me that Harley riders don't get boo boos!

Glad you are OK Steveford... I am assuming things did not go so well for the bike : (

Got any more details on what particular gear worked well, and what did not work as well? Any other "lessons learned"?

If you're posting post crash that's a good thing.
They have wrenches that fit almost any loose nut, how applied varies depending on the need, good on you for having the right gear on (Note to self: get riding pants soon.)

And if Harley riders don't get boo boos, what do they get? I'd throw in some gallows humor here, but I won't. Just glad you're okay. But if you don't mind post some details about what happened.

Steve; glad you're ok. Maybe you'll join me in my crusade to persuade folks to wear all gear, all the time.

When they ask me on a hot day why I have all that gear on,my answer is"I'd rather sweat than bleed."

I also have fun with people that ask me about the heavy riding jacket... I tell 'em:

"It's a good jacket, I could probably slide a good 100 yards before I get down to bone." Then I flash a big smile.

It makes my point.

When they ask me on a hot day ...

I usually say a bit of sweating is a lot less uncomfortable than skin grafts : D

When we were in CO, Grizzly gave me some scary statistics about how far you slide after crashing at certain speeds. He then proceeded to give me similar stats as to how much of you disappear (is ground off) compared to sliding distance wo/ protective gear. All approximate numbers but still ... YIKES!

The gear was AGV helmet, Buell medium weight leather jacket all the way from China, my ancient SpeedMode pants, cheap-o generic winter gloves and AlpineStar waterproof boots (the model escapes me at the moment).
The cheap-o glove's seam split which did in my knuckle which isn't surprising as I landed with my hand folded underneath me. Some abrasion on the boots, jacket's elbow and pant's knee pads but it's all still servicable.
The X1 took a few knocks: bars, mirror, clutch lever, toe peg, turn sig, tank cover, carbon tank accents, carbon K&N cover, derby cover, chunk of tupperware that passes for a fairing, fairing bracket, passenger footpeg, bolt here and there but I think that the important stuff is straight. I'll find out tomorrow.
Perhaps another lesson relearned is that even though the Buell is so easy and so much fun to ride fast, there's cars and animals everywhere just waiting to put you on your head when you least expect it.
As for what happened, I crested a hill on this great two lane road I ride every day and at the base of the hill a car was getting ready to turn left in front of me as a pick up truck was pulling out in front of me.
It was Oh "F" word as this was bad, I grabbed the front brake, the road was wet from slop coming out of construction dump trucks that use the road all day, the front wheel grabbed for a second and then washed out and down I went, ending up by the pick up truck's front wheels.

Glad you're not too stove up!

GLAD to hear you're okay! Add me to the list of those that ride in full gear. Had ONE crash with everything but riding pants & boots, and lost lots of knee. From that day on, it was full suit.

Get to a trackday! No trucks, no construction, no left turning minivans!

Steve, glad to hear you're ok and it was only a short visit to hospital : )
Reminds me that I should invest in some "Draggin" jeans or similar kevlar pants (I wear jeans most of the time).

RE sliding, you can slide a LONG way. A long time ago (again due to loose nut) I ended up going over the handlebars at around 100km/h with the bike still going on the front wheel. Then gravity took over and I slid along the road, with a Kwaka GPz750 on top of me! I slid at least 100 metres on my back, and during that time my jacket twisted around so the side, which had thinner leather, wore through a hole the size of my palm. Matching gravel rash too, but just in that spot.
Good gear helps a lot : )

Steveford,
Glad you're OK, sounds like the bike has a good case of road rash, is all. I'm all for the gear, all the time. I've been hollering at myself all summer for not buying leather pants yet...maybe this'll do it for me. Again, glad you're OK. (PS-ALL riders get "boo boos"; )

May I ask please, get a ticket? Who, if anyone, is considered at fault in that type of situation? I can imagine, but how did that part of it pan out?

"aren't you uncomfortable in all that leather?"

"you bet, but less than I would be in a full body cast"

Thank you one and all for your kind words - the bike tracks true so all is good.
It was kind of surreal as I had to comfort the elderly woman passenger in the truck that was pulling out in front of me as her son was killed in a bike wreck and I guess that I brought it all back up to the surface. I'm bleeding and kind of stunned, she's crying, my bike's lying in the middle of the road and I'm patting her on the back and telling her it's okay.
No tickets were issued and no insurance companies were involved but I WAS speeding.
That's it for me - always dress for the crash which hopefully won't happen and I see you with the rubber side down.
Steve Ford
P.S.
Lemonchili, you shouldn't make someone with bruised ribs laugh! It's so lucky for both of us that you live on the other side of the planet.
