This Saturday, October 9th, the Asheboro HOG chapter will be riding to the Carolina Raptor Center located in Huntersville, NC just North of Charlotte. We will begin meeting at Cox Harley-Davidson at 8:30am Saturday morning, and we will leave the dealership at approximately 9am to start the ride to Huntersville. The Carolina Raptor Center is a rehabilitation center for birds of prey such as eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, falcons etc. where the center is ran solely by unpaid volunteers. There are well over 100 birds on site at any give time to receive treatment from gun shot wounds, impact wounds with motor vehicles, power line electrocution, etc. Some birds die, while others are nursed back to health and returned to the wild. Some birds however are unable to be released back into the wild due to unrecoverable injuries and stay at the Carolina Raptor Center for the rest of their natural lives where these birds can be seen in man-made aviaries on the center’s property. Three times during Saturday, volunteers who work at the center will take select birds out of their aviaries and hand carry them to a weathering area for public display. These birds will literally be just a few feet from the observers while the volunteers talk about each bird. Memberships can be purchased where the member will receive newsletters, free admission any time, can adopt a bird, get behind the scene tours to watch the Vets and other personnel handle an injured bird during the rehabilitation process. I have approximately six free passes for guest to the center on Saturday. Those who do not have a free pass will have to pay an admission charge to the center of $5.00. If the number of our group is 20 or more, the fee will be reduced to $2.75. The weather is going to be great this weekend, and this should be a really fun ride to visit the Carolina Raptor Center. If anyone has a digital camera, please bring it so we can get some really good pictures to put in Tim’s newsletter. If anyone has any questions, please call me at 336-841-6354. Gary Kilpatrick |
