92 days ago my company announced they were closing my factory down & consolidating the equipment into other facilities. At that time Madison was brought up as the likely location for the 3 lines in the dept I over see. Then shortly afterwards Menasha was brought up..its next to Appleton. For 3 months now its been nothing but waffling back & forth between the 2 locations. The Madison area project is actually a joint venture with another company owned by a group of folks in Italy. My company basically wants to merge so at a future date a buyout of the other company would be easier. They have some customers & technology that we dont have & would love to get hold of. Been a lot of bargaining going on yet still no definate answers for us after 3 months. We were told today that we will have a definate location in 3 weeks so we can decide if we choose to stay with the company & relocate or not. Its been hell for these 3 months also, complete uncertainty as to what the future holds, where we will live, etc etc. Going thru aspirin like crazy due to the stress headaches being induced as a result. Cant wait for this deal to be finalized. Right now I dont really care which location they pick, just choose 1 so we can move forward. Sorry for boring you all, but had to tell someone. Wife doesnt want to hear it because she is doing worse than I am in regards to it all. | ||

I'll be praying for ya Dyna! (Like it or not  ). My family just relocated for my new job. All voluntary, all positive, everything went remarkably well, but still stressful as hell. Its amazing how it gets under your skin... like having sand in oil. It doesn't look that bad on the surface or at any particular moment, but it really chews at you over time. | ||

Don't let it get to you, Dyna. All jobs are temporary; some just last longer than others. I still think you should be sending your resume to some of the plastic plants around this part of the country. If you ever moved out here, you wouldn't be able to stop grinning every time you went for a ride. I still have some roads I want to take you on; both for the roads themselves, and for the scenery. | ||

Crusty, im all for leaving this entire part of the country. In fact my company has a plant in Lawrenceville Georgia..about 30 minutes from the center of Atlanta..& I could relocate there if I wanted. However the wife does not want to leave the kids & grandbabies...so I guess sometimes you just need to make em happy. She's ok with Madison or Menasha tho....not really that far from Milwaukee. | ||

I feel for you Dyna, but remember Company loyalty is a one-way street, you're expected to be loyal to them, but they'll forget you in a heart-beat. Look out for yourself first & don't forget that it's only a job, there are other ways of making a living out there. The hardest part is getting over the inertia of changing. I'm in a very fortunate position, in that there are plenty of jobs round here & if the company starts jerking my string, I'm gone! Everybody knows it & it makes for cooler heads & a bit more respect from the management. Whatever happens enjoy life, with the thought that there's always someone worse off than yourself. And if that don't work, go outside on a clear night, look up at the stars & you'll realise how insignificant we really are. dam she's been putting philosophy pills in my coffee again  | ||

Dyna - sorry to hear about your situation. Basically it SUCKS! I've been there since March of this year, and while we've moved to smaller, temporary facilities, there is still no final direction or sense that my job situation is secure. Not a good feeling - it gets to you, even if you try to go with the flow. Hang in there. Henrik | ||

Dyna -- having lived through a similar situation, know that there's an end to the pain also, take comfort that, while you're waiting for the captains of industry to reach a conclusion, you've got a paycheck that ain't bouncing (in what is, from all reports, the one section of the country where job growth is not happening) . . . you guys will work through it, I'm sure, keeping your priorties straight and ending up in a better situation for you all hang tight, bud | ||

Ironic thing is, what Dyna is experiencing is the contemporary business practice concerning relocation and potential mergers/acquisitions. Everything is on a need to know basis and only the decision makers feel they need to know. The rank and file is the last to get real information and that often leads to lots of speculation both good and bad. Every situation is different. Some take care of their employees and some don't. Unfortunately, most don't, although Dyna may be in a better situation. Have been through it way too many times and just pray all works out well for Dyna and his family. | ||

It usually leads to more bad speculation than good, and usually ends up with the company loosing the more marketable people. Employees don't need to know all the projections, but it does help to give them the facts of the matter instead of the mushroom treatment. | ||

Mike & Bill, whats really screwed up is even my plant manager had no idea we were slated for close down. And now with the merger talk of my department there are only 2 people in the organization that actually know the facts & whats happening. They keep sending the #3 guy in charge of everything down to talk with us & he is not privy to any inside info that may be going on. Very very secretive. | ||

Sounds like someone (or two) are shopping themselves around for a package plan in the merger, and the staff are pieces on the chess board. There is one person in this life that you can control. Focus on what that one person can do to most positively affect the events shaping/comprising your life. So forget about the clueless fools mismanaging the affairs of your employer. Turn away from anxiety and towards adventure, investigation and discovery. Act upon what you know. You know that you will be given a choice to move to one of two possible locations. Pay a visit to each; obtain the real estate listings for each; reconnoiter each of the areas, find the good restaurants and pubs and whatever else interests you. Do a weekend with your wife at a bed and breakfast in each town. It sure beats staying at home feeding your anxiety. Also, in case you may not be enamored with the ultimately chosen relocation offer, get your resumé up-to-date, well honed and polished. Send it out to prospective employers NOW, get yourself some alternate job offers or at least interviews NOW. That will help put YOU in control of the situation rather than at the mercy of your employer. It might also be advisable to get your employer's promised offer of relocation in writing. Its been hell for these 3 months also, complete uncertainty as to what the future holds, where we will live, etc etc. I can sympathize, sorta. Dec of '02 i got notice of a possible deployment to the middle east, and i was deployed in Jan of '03 to Iraq for nine months. Got back in Oct of '03, in Nov got word of redeployment in Jan of '04, sounded certain, but i got lucky, many of my friends went back. they are due back soon, and i have word of almost certain deployment in Jan '05, if not then, it will be Jun '05. i havent had a life to my own for almost three years now. school, jobs, girls, places ive lived, its all a blur. i dont get worked up about things, well, the first time i did, it was for a war after all. I just do the best i can given any situation, and i have been doing very well for myself. In other words... think and act like a man who is in command of his life instead of a victim whose life depends upon the whims of others. Thats great advice, i know very few who could have said it better. Take that advice, and count your blessings, it could be worse. I wish you the best of luck. Ken | ||

Blake, actually I am already well prepared that the site they choose in Madison may not be to my liking. As a result I have already scheduled a visit with the Menasha plant for tuesday, spoke with the plant manager & informed him I was more than willing to change fields..still plastic just injection molding. Also working with the plant manager in atlanta to see about a trip there. Company says they will pay for the wife & I to fly down & visit. Believe me when I say im not sitting around & just waiting for what they decide, plans are in motion & they will go forward unless the offer they give is sufficient enough for me to relocate with the lines. | ||

Dyna- you are going to like the Atlanta area. It was the best place I have ever lived. You'll find if you move there that your standard of living goes up, and if you can avoid a commute, your stress will go down. And, some of the best motorcycle roads in the U.S. are an hour away. | ||
