So there we were, the CityX and I, out for a casual ride down a favorite road. Tooling along at a sedate 70+ mph minding our own business and actively strafing apexes. We come out of a left hand sweeper and on to a straight so we accelerate and go through the gears to the next corner, a nice downhill right, banked slightly in my favor.
As I start to slow a bit for the turn, a deer crosses the road about 30' in front of me. Since there are never just one of those things crossing the road, I grab a fistful of front brake. I brake a lot harder than I normally would for that corner and sure enough another one makes a break for it, right in front of me not 5' away.
Man, am I glad I got on the brakes like I did or I woulda had some very expensive venison.

I had something similar happen to me last week. I just turned onto my rode and was getting ready to pull the front end up when a doe ran right in front of me. I was kind of spooked so I figured I would just take it easy the rest of the way home and right at that thought a buck came chasing after. Gotta be careful out there, I see on average 4 to 5 deer a day out where I live. Most of the time they are lingering in my front yard.

Yeah, be careful out there, all of you. This is the season, and the rut will start soon with all the boys in the crowd throwing caution to the wind. Be alert, especially around dusk or early morning. Ride safe, deer leave a rather large dent.

I had the same thing happen but it was a Havalina that darted out in front of me in mid corner.

Deer are a major issue in my neighborhood and on the very nice curvy roads leading into it. I see several every day either crossing or sitting on the edge of the road. They should be thinning out a bit soon though. Hunting season coming.

Deer are very seldom ever seen solo -- the does normally have twins, so look for groups of three til close to the end of fall -- when rut starts, the males act lilke we did (do) in college, with no direction coming fomr the big head at all (and it ain't that they are all that rational in the first place) . . . . .

keep yer eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel, or sumpin like that

Well John,

The problem with the moose over this way is that at night you just can't see them until its too late. If they are standing side or arse on to you it can be a mess like the car above. The only way to see them is when their eyes reflect in the headlights. The wildlife officer who was winching that one up into the back of the truck estimated its weight to be about 800lbs and considered it to be a realatively small animal compared to some he has cleaned off the road. Some moose I have seen in the woods have been as big as 1500lbs.....you learn to respect these animals.

There are no pictures of the front of the car but the grill and headlights were perfectly intact. The problem with a moose is that at 100kph (60mph) when you hit one you take out its legs and then the body comes straight through the windshield. I have seen cars with the roof sections peeled back like a convertible with its roof half down.

Luckily the people in the above car survived with very minor injuries. There was a man and his two (I think) kids on their way home. He suffered cuts and bruises while the kids escaped uninjured. They were properly secured in car seats in the back seat of the car. Luckily no one was in the front passenger seat or they would have been seriously injured.

I did have the unfortunate incident of coming across an accident about two years ago where the passenger died as a result of the moose-vehicle accident. That night we used the headlight from the bike to light the inside of the car while a nurse administered first aid.

Turns out that wildlife/livestock are one of the leading causes of death on motorcycles in Montana. A good reason not to ride after dark.

Believe it or not the deer in New Jersey are a real problem as well. More get killed by vehicular accidents than by the gun or bow. On my 15 mile ride to my business every morning I see at least 25 deer and have to stop 2 or 3 times to let them cross in front of me. They are damned near tame. I've seen people feed them by hand. I've nailed six of them by car or truck in the last 15 years. Even a little bump is a $2 grand bill at the body shop. They also wipe out any and all plantings you may have around the house. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful animals, but they are a royal pain in the . I've seen a couple of 12 pointers this season. I used to shoot a few in the back yard, but its hardly hunting when they just stand there and look at you.

Jersey,

I read somewhere that since hunting deer was restricted by the Trenton crowd, that the deer /vehicle incident rate has increased 400% in Jersey

My Grand father and I shot a moose (turned out to be one day before season, we almost got in a LOT of trouble). When the fish and feathers guys in Alaska weighed it they found that it was just under 1800lbs. We had already gutted it... Biggest moose I have ever laid eyes on by a good margin.

Buelluk - If the animal rights loonies get their way, the deer will be starving due to over population. I'll have to take some pics next week on my commute. One guy had 11 on his lawn this morning. When I'm in a car they don't even acknowledge my presence. The Buell's thump does get them to look at least.

I just clipped my first deer on a MC yesterday morning. Was on the tail-end of a 700 mile rnd-trip, about 6:30-7:00 AM, heading directly into the sun.

I had slowed down to 50 mph because of the glare and didn't even see the critter untill it was right in front of me. Had just enough time to release the gas and reach for the brake when I clipped its back leg w/ the front tire.

Scared the poop right out'a me.

I pulled off as soon as there was a place and walked around the bike. Not a mark on it, not even a tiny bit of fur. Almost thought I might've imagined it. If I had been going 10 mph faster I could've well T-boned that doe and really had a story to tell, providing I ever woke up again.

came homoe from a 1000 mile plus weekend, just after dakr, and darned near got a group of three, Mamma and two fawns, about 100 meters from my house -- our situation here is similar to Jersey Guy's, they're everywhere, and so used to people that almost nothing gets their attention -- phew, a near miss is better than a hit, I'm guessing

Darthane...Look at the bright side, You can always find another hunting buddy. Whereas, your buddy that moved to CA may not be able to find a place to hunt that he can afford. Not to mention finding someone that hunts out there is pretty slim unless he lives far away from a metro area.

Here's hoping the butcher's place doesn't burn down this year. Good luck.

Bomber--what an unfortunate typo! Were you describing a transient phenomenon or a more permanent transformation?

"...left of center..." I'm told that is the correct point of aim...

Thang -- nossir, as you suspected, fat fingers and my non-professional mode of typing caught up with me again! Left of center IS the right aim point, if you're that good -- me, I always either aimed for center of mass, or called the arclights!

I know I can always count on Blake to move toward the light!

Blake -- to be honest, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, sometimes a typo is just a typo, and I"m thinkin you spend a great deal of effort policing this issue.

I finished putting my new Jet Hot ceramic coated headers on my XB9 and took it for a trial spin on Wednesday night around 10:30. I was doing about 50 on a back road and had the classic confrontation with a deer in the headlight. I locked them up until the rear wheel howled & skidded until it came off the pavement when I did a little stoppie. There she was 5 feet in front of me still looking at me. Thank God for good brakes.

This morning on the way in to work I started playing with them a bit - I have multiple encounters every morning. If you beep the horn their ears pick up & they freeze. If you turn toward them aggressively & rev the engine they run away. I'm talking slow speed here like 25 MPH. I would'n recommend it at anything faster....

I know there are plenty of great deer hunting areas in this nation, but try being a motorcycle rider and living right next to Pike County IL sometime. I assure you it can be a great challenge.

I'll have to dig those photos back out from lastyear.
