I picked up the XB9R on Friday morning. I got off work at 7, and had to wait till 9 for the bank to open. That was the longest two hours of my life! I had just came off a 14 hour shift and was worn the heck out, but that didn't keep me from getting wound up about taking my new toy home! Anyway, the truly first ride was the short 7 miles home. I left the dealer and took the backroads for a bit so that I could get used to the bike. I looked like the typical wobbly newbie for a bit. I raced professionally during my high school years, but this is much different that running through swamps and backwoods. Learning again that you have to throw these bikes where you want them to go and not "point them" took a bit, but on the second ride the next day it was ohh so sweet to lean into a tight corner all the while gassing it harder and feeling it just muscle on through. All I can say is that I am one happy camper and a proud new papa!

I am a newbie on the board...but if any of you find your self heading through Vegas, drop me a line. I love playing tour guide!

NOw... lets get ready for Vegas Bike Fest! It starts Thursday!

Nick

Thanks!

That'd be cool! I might try to make that ride later in the year after I get a little more time on the bike...and it's a bit cooler.

Do you guys have a BRAG group happening over there?

Also from AZ... If you are new to sport-bikes you might want to pick up a copy of "Total Control" by Lee Parks. After that, try "Twist of the Wrist I and II" by Keith Code. I rode dirt bikes my whole life and these books have some VERY good information regarding sport-bike riding.

Did they ask you how much you weigh? Not to freak you out, but I'd like to suggest spending a few minutes back at the shop with your mechanic discussing how you want it to ride and setting up the suspension. Book settings leave it a bit stiffer than you might expect.

M1, Thanks for the idea. I'll give that a try. Not necessarily new to sport bikes... but new to the new sport bikes. I am for sure in a learning curve. I'll Definitely drop you all a line when I make that trip. I may drag along a buddy on his Blast when I head that way.

Mid: The dealer could have cared less... they had the money I had the bike. But.. I have been looking at the factory manual and am planning on trying their suggestions as far as rider weight, etc. Right now, as you pointed out the bike does seem to be a bit stiff, but not so much to be uncomfortable. More like the difference between regular steering on a car and rack and pinion. That make sense at all? Believe me, I have been treating the bike with the utmost respect! I did all the broken bones and beat up body stuff back when I was racing!

Thanks again guys!

My S1 is set for my weight, 230lbs, when Mr Grumpy was here this past summer and borrowed my bike for a week he said it was "bloody stiff and hard on the bones" and he was about 175lbs

Congrats, enjoy the bike. Since you live in Vegas, I suggest you get some Mobil One recap 15-50 in that baby at the 1000 mile mark.

Helps with the heat. Red Line makes 20-60 for summer.

Tucon: Yeahh.. so far so good for the Blast rider! He took the advice of someone here and made the first payment, and they bit on it! He has gotten it registered and tagged, so what he decided to do is just go on and let them make the next move. Thanks!!!!

Bruce: Already bought a gallon of the stuff! I'm trying to decide on primary oil now. I havent been able to find the Mobil 1 gear oil, but I havent checked AutoZone yet either. Any suggestions? And... thanks! I have been enjoying the heck out of it so far!

Newfie: you and I weigh out about the same. So.. I'll see how it pans out when I make the adjustments. I am going to spend next weekend doing a tuneup and tweaking the suspension. I'll be sure to let you know how that pans out.

If the bike still has the original dunlop D207's... TAKE THEM OFF!!! I think the bike will handle better on the rims.

Just kidding...

Replace them with Metzeler Sportec M1's or Pirelli Diablo's at your EARLIEST convenience. Until you do this, just set the suspension at the factory settings for your weight because the bike will be wholy transformed (for the better) by the Metzelers. It didn't take any more than about 15 feet for me to know that the metzeler's are a MUCH better tire for the XB suspension geometry.

In-case you haven't noticed yet...

With the stock tires, the XB wants to stand up under light trail braking (be sure to do all of your braking before turn-in) and it takes a good deal of effort on the inside bar to keep the bike leaned UNLESS you use proper techniques when hanging off - then the bike handles fine with the factory tires. The problem is, I don't like to hang off all the time AND once you switch to the Metzelers it still handles beautifully when hanging off... Better than beautifully IMO...

In my area, Kragen, Auto Zone and Pep Boys all carry it.

Best of luck, great bike!

Hey M1... somebody put a brand new set of Dunlops on it just before got it. They have been broken in, but still have plenty of life left on them. I'll have a look see at the Mets too though.

And Bruce: I managed to pick that oil up today at Autozone! Thanks!
