Just when you think Darwinism will thin out the squid gene pool, someone films a how to video complete with crashes! On second thought.....

I don't need the tape... I got to see a squid crash, live!

I was in Fresno over the weekend (don't ask) and was talking with a friend in a parking lot after the bar closed. In the supermarket lot next door there were a couple squids practicing wheelies on their japanese sport bikes (what else?) They were wearing regulation squid gear; helmet, t-shirt, shorts. One of them lost control and did a face plant into a curb. All his friends rushed over, but it was too late. The ambulance eventually came and took him away.

Whee!

I own a few videos like this. Every time I start feeling coragous I just watch the "Crashes" portion and remember why I stay on two wheels instead of one.

I can't bash all of them. Doing a plain old wheelie can be pretty damn hard. Takes a lot of skill to balance a bike on one wheel for any length wether standing on the pegs are sitting on your butt. As for the other stunts, I'll stay out of that. More than I'm willing to try.

Sorry Guys but I have to say that IMHO those kids really are amazing. Their bike handling skills are flat out impressive. Doing it on the streets is not particularly smart but anyone who is honest and not just jealous of their ability has to admit that it really takes a lot of time, practice and kahunas to do some of those stunts. I'm 47 and my friends think I'm nuts for trying to master some of the tricks. Not that 80 mph wheelies or stoppies are in my future but I am close to consistantly doing good solid first and second gear wheelies and 35 mph stoppies. Burnouts are also fun...just hell on tires. As long as you practice off road where you are not endangering others I can't imagine why anyone would criticize these (sometimes extremely talented) kids. Doing tricks on the road just gives us all a bad name but in their own way this new breed of riders are just as impressive as any of us old school kneedraggers, canyon carvers or track racers. Different yes....wrong no...Of course, this is just my opinion! Which as we all know is just like a certain body part...Skip

High speed wheelies take no skill at all, just tons of horsepower. They mean nothing. Anyone can do them. Now popping a bike up vertical at near walking speed, spinning it 180 degrees and going the other way, THAT takes skill!

The problem I have are the squids that do this down public streets risking the lives of others. On a closed track this people are awesome. There is a time and a place.

I found a small reference to Squids in a Dungeons and Dragons book. The Squid is a beast with extremely high speed and maneuverability, but low intelligence, low hit points, low experience and low offensive capability. The Squid is largely dismissed as an endangered species with little danger to an average warrior. In fact, because of its high speed, low armor and low hit probability, Squids are primarily a danger to themselves and their mates, although Squids accidentally kill themselves at a ratio of more than 10 to 1 over their mates. The breed is largely alive due to a male creature called the 'High School Student' which can morph into a Squid, thereby continuing the species as Squids rarely live to reproduce.

The Squid's only serious offensive capability is the 'Crash' during which the Squid rams its opponent, primarily a creature called the 'Car.' However, the Crash is almost always fatal to the Squid and rarely does more than a few hit points of damage to the Car. Squids have been known to use the Crash against a related and more vulnerable species called the 'Enthusiast.' Most Enthusiasts simply avoid the Squid as a defensive maneuver. The more serious danger to the Enthusiast is a Squid's only other offensive capability, which is a rudimentary magic spell called the 'Pass.' The Pass causes a decrease in intelligence and an increase in speed for the duration of the spell. The Pass causes the Enthusiast to behave as a Squid for a brief but dangerous period of time and can cause a 'Crash' which is almost always fatal. Italian Enthusiasts are very vulnerable to the Pass, while American and German Enthusiasts are virtually invulnerable due to a defense called the 'Leather Jacket of Indifference.' The Pass is most effective against other Squids or Japanese Enthusiasts. However, a new breed of Enthusiast called the 'Buell' is as vulnerable as the Italian Enthusiast to the Pass.

There is a whole lot of wrong with doing this stuff on the street! I take nothing away from the true stunt riders who can wheelie, stoppie, and whatever else as long as it's done in the right place. These young kids (dang I'm starting to sound like my father!) that want to cruise down the freeway at 90 on one wheel with just a helmet, some baggy jeans, and t-shirt are plain STUPID! This new breed of riders is already an endangered species.

Yeah, gotta admit...that stuff is entertaining. Hell, I even got some cheap stunt vids at Walmart!

Anyone seen the Ghost Rider vids? That guy is completely mental...it's great.

Ok Rick, you got me. I do have to admit I find all extreme sports entertaining and truly amazing. Fortunately, most are conducted on private property but that isn't always possible for big bike stunts.

I totally respect the balance and skills, but I also realize that I neither possess those skills nor do I want to spend the time and money to develop them.

I wish them well in their endeavors. However, I wish they would keep the activity in some off road environment where they don't/can't hurt the general public. As normal, semi-law abiding, motorcyclists we already have a hard enough time trying to maintain a positive pubic image.

Fortunately, there are groups like HOG that perform a lot of community service functions and raise a ton of money for National and Local Charities that help get the pressure off our backs.

Without those efforts, we may have been in deeper yogurt a long time ago, eh?
