On your workbench? Pah. I was talking about a racetrack. And I'd still beat your drill press, unless you mounted it on the back of an R1. In which case... My Blast might be slightly outclassed.

Bomber,
If, let's assume for a moment, that someone were to be down in your neck of the woods, oh, let's say around the end of September or so, what would the prospect be of testing out your speed controls on your machinery by carving out some aluminum block into something less than a raw block? I don't have the chunk of material yet (hate to call it "billet" as that makes the price go up), but I do have a rough design in mind and a rough model CAD'd up, and some rough dimensions. Have no idea how long it would take, but would have 4-6 hours to spend for a couple of evenings if doable.
How far are you from Schaumburg?
Nothing confirmed yet though.
Think triple-tree, only different, for a general idea.

Mike

if someone were to be in my neck of the woods, they would be welcome to come on into the entropy lab and make little pieces of aluminum out of bigger pieces . . . couple of weekday evenings would be fine, as would a weekend time slot . . . .

I'm about 20 non-rush hour mikes north of Schaumberg, or, measured another way, about ten minutes west of the late, much lamented Highland House

also, give me an idea of the thinkness of the part you want to make, or, more importantly, the thinkness of the stock you want to make it out of . . . . . the Mill is good fun, but it's a bit on the small size, in terms of capacity . . . . also, just a reminder, both it and the lathe are entirely BAM (brain assisted manufacturing -- no CNC in the entropy lab)

Raw block size would probably start out at 8"x3"x4" or so, not sure of the material yet but most likely some form of aluminum. (Mag or Ti would be nice but not necessary in this case.) Over half of the bulk would turn into chips. My little Unimat lathe isn't set up and isn't big enough anyways. I'll start shopping for raw material this week. I'll be making some better measurements and taking a few photos over the next few weeks. If it works it might be marketable, but the market would be small and limited if existant at all. Mainly just something for my own comfort zone while riding.

the mill can handle 3inches (plus a little so you can pop the hole all the way through . . . . )

in any event, you and your aluminum are welcome any time (I'm sure my tooling will NOT make the slightest impression on Ti, dunno bout Mag, but doubt it)

Bomber - Do you know what type of motors they are? Induction motors are difficult to control. But if they are universal motors (they will have brushes if they are) then its a lot easier.

J -- induction, sir, alas ;-}

however, through the kindness of another denizen of the board, there may be hope for this inexperienced metal butcher . . . . . . (I almost typed through "the kindness of strangers," but there are no strangers on this board!)

truely --

actually, I'm thinkin about hooking the MOdel A up to a shaft that runs across the ceiling with big ol leather straps powering all the machines in the entropy lab (as described above) . . . . the only fly in that particular oitment is that the owner of the A would have my guts for garters if I did that!
