Court, I prefer Naked bike for the Bandit, it can be a hooligan machine, but it does lack the je ne c'est pas to qualify it as a street fighter 
But, no personality? Oh, I must disagree with you there. I have a nice D&D s/o which gives it a nice deep resonance, and there's lots o' vibes from 5500 to 7500 .
As involving as Buell ( or any non rice ride)? no, but I like it better than my buddy's ZRX1200 |

as far as what qualifies as a street fighter?
I would say the mighty Norvin would be there (egli is too finished  ), I think it's too "macho" for a cafe racer (and I like to think that the SFs are a natural evolution of the CRs)
The S1 (the X1 is on that too finished line as well...)
Triumph's Speed Triple (the only production bike that I know of that stays true to the SF roots)
geez, that's about it.
everything else is too well designed (OK, overdesigned) for the streetfighter class (and I'm including the Monster in here, because it seems like it was designed as a designer bike to begin with)... as far as my knowledge of the breed goes. |

I can see there are still some Buelligan types out there who need an education in Streetfighting. How the hell does a Suzuki Bandit qualify as a Streetfighter ? It's just a rehash of every Jap four from the coffin tank Kawasaki era.
as for that Speed Tripple, do we really have to go there ? It's a flying pig , man. Cool bike , yes, but not a true Streetfighter. They just dressed it up for the masses because the Streetfighter is very popular in the UK. Triumph = UK = Streetfighter = sales, not so for Buell. The 'slow poke' V twin is regarded by the masses as an antiquated tractor engine, but hey what do they know ? Over here it's almost like Buells V twin is Americas best kept secret.

How do you figure that the Speed Triple (especially the latest version) is not a SF? I don't see how they dressed it up from the Daytona.
They gave it upright bars and did the twin headlight thing (and yes, they altered the motor, but I don't think that's as big a concern with the later iterations as it was with the 509s).
Other than that, it stays very close to Daytona specs, from what I've read.
I agree with you on most of your other points (in this thread, anyway  ) but I take issue on your view on the trumpet, if, for no other reason than to get some more conversation going |

First we had Standards, Cruisers, Touriers, and Sport Bikes. That made some sense. Now there's Power Cruisers, Retro Standards, Fighters (street and sport), Sport Touriers, Sportster Sports, ad nausium. It has far more to do with marketing than it has to do with the motorcycles themselves. Shakespeare said it best 400 years ago: "A rose by any other name smells as sweet."

I think giving people no frills, naked, unpractical motorcycles is not just a marketing scheme. It's looking at what a small percentage of the motorcycling world was doing to the current standards or sportbikes and takling heed...ripping the pretty pedals off the damn roses! |

I'll tell you what I think is "impractical" wrt a motorcycle...
1. A street motorcycle encased in plastic like it spends the majority of it's life at triple digit speeds blasting around the Daytona road course.
2. Chain final drive. Unless you like constant maintenance and filthy goo flung all over everything.
3. Valve lash adjustments.
4. Four... cylinders/valves-per-cyl/throttle bodies.
5. Water as a motorcycle engine coolant. |

Blake, you have captured most of the reasons I originally had for even being intrested in a Buell. The additional one was, of course, performance.
Rick, don't fool yourself. The motorcycle business is a business after all, and like any other business in a free market economy there are but three motivations for success (and for being in business at all): Profit, Profit, Profit. Responsibility to the shareholders is just another way of saying Profit. Anything that increases Profit is good. Clever marketing, so long as it increases Profit, is therefore good. Take an existing cruiser, do some very basic engine mods to bump up the power a bit and put some decent brake calipers on it, give it a clever new name - "Power Cruiser" - to stimulate the interest of the buying public (the source of all Profit) and that's marketing, bubba. Spend a couple hundred on the mods and charge a thousand more for the finished product. The only motivation for any of it is (drum roll, please) Profit.
Practicality (however that term may be defined this week in the motorcycle industry) isn't a factor if Profit is to be made. Take a step back... in the US, at least, all motorcycles are on the ragged edge of practicality. We don't buy them because we are thinking of practicality, or because the motorcycles themselves are practical. We have much different reasons for buying motorycles, the manufacturers know that, and their market researchers attempt to gauge those buying motives and attempt to make predictions that will lead to more Profit. Sometimes it works (the Ducati Monster, for example) and sometimes it doesn't (the Yamaha GTS1000A, the Honda CB1000).

There are products out their with more motivation than just profit...and those are generally the ones that succeed...if not by profit margins, then on more substancial levels. |

Yeah, I've seen the world of "practical" motorcyle use, and it ain't pretty. Ugly convoluted steel frames attached to the rear of 250cc machines, milk crates tied down to carry all manner of things... <shudder>. Please, let's keep "practicality" out of the Buell equation, at least for now. I think "versatility" is more in line with what Rick is saying. I think my M2 has proven how versatile a Buell really is. Any bike that can accommodate two weeks on the road, riding cross country, camping, and day hiking, with no outside support has GOT to be considered "versatile".  |
