I changed my rockerbox gaskets and did just as the manual said along with some help from some professionals from the board but something is not right.
When I started the bike up it was knocking terribly loud, way worse than any Buell I have ever heard.
What could I have done wrong?
HELP.
Ken

How long did it knock? It takes a minute or so for the self adjusting valves to re-self adjust. I seem to remember being very alarmed as well, like 30 seconds or a minute or something.

you may need to bleed down the lifters, if they got a air pocket in nthem when you relived the pressure on them they may have got air.

now this will sound radical and stupid so if you don't want to do it don't, but my 2000 cyclone did that after trailering all the way to florida from upstae NY and some bumpy roads. I got it to FL and started it and by god I thoght something was gonna blow up. Called a buddy of my back at a dealership and he told me to just rev it up quick and fast to redline a couple times and see if it stopped.

this sounded crazy to me but I did it....and it worked . but if you don't feel comfortable doing it don't. BTW I did this while riding it.

Did you happen to pull the pushrods out & not install them properly?

Not sure about the XB motors, but on the Big twins the intake & exhaust pushrods are different lengths.

They knock really bad right when you fire them back up. As already said it should go away within a minute or so but you will need to rev it up to about 2500rpms.

If that doesn't stop the knock then Dyna is probably correct and you installed the pushrods backwards.

When I started it up and heard the loud knock, It startled me and I turned it off. Then I started it again and ran it for about 10 seconds and shut it down for fear of really screwing it up. I did not pull the rocker arms out.

I'd say either the funny thingys (lifters) are airlocked or there is no oil in them. These motors don't make a great amount of oil pressure so if it were me I'd rev it up for a minute to see if that was the problem.

Just an update guys before I fall asleep in front of the monitor. I started up the bike again tonight and let it run for about 20 seconds and then I hit the gas pretty good before I took off. When I saw the puff of white smoke and the funny smell I shut it down. I then thought to myself maybe it is supposed to do that so I started it back up and took off. The loud knock stopped, it took it a couple of minutes but it stopped. I don't think it runs quite the same though, motor seems to shake a bit more along with a funny smell and ticking noise and doesn't idle as smooth now. Hell, it's been so long since I heard it run maybe I am just paranoid. What do you guys think? You think I might have scorched something?

I went on a short ride (about 15 minutes) and nothing happened out of the ordinary except it cut out a couple of times, could have been hitting the rev limiter though.

I'd say everything is alright,

My S1 sounded terrible when I did the rocker box gaskets too and after a couple minutes everything was cool.

By the way - very nice picture in your profile, don't suppose you stumbled across a few with the Newfoundland Flag on them!!!!!

Blastered -- all is normal with your scoot -- ion the process of reinstalling your rocker box covers, all you did was force the oil outa the lifters . . . .tkae a minute or three for em to pump back up again...

btw, the Blast that live in my garage did the same thing after laying on it's side for the better part of an hour, after fetching up against a tree -- the poor dear lit right off, but made the god-awful sound for a couple of minutes . . . .. once the lifters pumped up, it was fine -- so my guess is that this particular particularity is shared with tubers and XB series motors as well

Thanks guys, all this makes me feel better, for a little while I was worried.
Newfie, any flag would be fine with me if it was painted across those.....

(for some reason the song "she's a brick- awwww! keeps coming to mind)
