hello everybody!! I just found out about this site and hope i can find the time to check it all out.
my first pryority however is to fix my tempermental 99x1 lightning. I am starting to beleive my buell has a soul. I have owned it for 14 months now and am starting to have major issues. I had some problems last year with it losing power in the mid and open throttle positions intermitently and after washing it or riding in the rain, but it went away. . . . until now. About amonth ago i started loosing power again, but ONLY with pasengers aboard. I thought maybee it was mad at me for seeing other people as it rode fine under only me. (im kinda) weird a. now it's running like crap all the time. anyway problems are:
runs rough at all throttle pos.
seems like fuel line is being pinched (but isnt)
is not burning all fuell (can smell gas in exh)
can actually drop rmp to a stall by pushing on gas tank.
I think problem lies in feul injectors, fuel pressure, wire harness or ecm. ??????

If anybody has any ideas for me please let me know. I miss loveing my bike and so do the ladies.

thanks Burakuda

Have you checked the kickstand switch? A clue was when you said it happened after washing it or riding it in the rain. The switch might have gone bad and now it's intermittently cutting the ignition. It's kind of a common problem with Buells. Don't know why pushing on the tank or riding two up would do anything. Maybe that's enough to flex everything just so?

I know its not a kill switch issue. the problem occurs mainly when the bike is under a load (eg. booty on board.) And its just loosing power nnot shutting off.

How about checking the tank vent!!!!!

If thats kinked your cutting off the air to the tank and causing it to airlock.

Burakuda,
My S1W was giving me some trouble earlier this year that was very similar to but not quite exactly what you describe.

Long story short, after checking everything I could think of and replacing several things I finally got to the timing sensor in the nosecone. Swapped it out for a good one and all the wierd symptoms/problems went away, so you might want to keep that in mind.

The fuel pump is in the rear of the tank, and the wires could have rubbed through, moving the tank stops the fuel pump? The ignition systems only ground connection is also on the frame at the rear of the tank. The original isolators on the 99X1 are kinda soft - with two on the bike the rear cylinder can touch the bottom of the tank (note shiney spot on rocker box cover in picture)
Good Luck....

I have had this problem also, found that it was the rearhead temp sensor. On the 99 the head temp sensor is next to the rear spark plug. I have had this same problem when I get stuck behind a car in the rain. The mist goes right in on the head temp sensor. Once it dries out a bit, not problem. This is probably why they relocated the temp sensor to the top center of the heads (instead of the side) on the 2000, 2001, and 2002 models.}

I'm experiencing very similar symptoms in a 2000 S3...If you find a cure let me know (please). Just talked to a mechanic the other day, he thought it sounded like air-starved, especially after I mentioned the gas in the exhaust. A new filter and plugs are enroute, but w/ the nearest dealer 300 miles away it could take a few days.

Rek, if that's the case, all you need to do to test it (provided there's not some kind of blockage in your throttle body) is remove the airbox and start it up. If it's truly starved for air due to the filter then it will run fine without it.

I'd check that tank vent first....Pop the cap when its running poorly and see if it clears up...make sure its not totally full when doing this.If you open and hear a 'swoosh sound your hose is blocked.Another problem I had on my '99 was where the wiring cable was routed over the front of swingarm it wore through power wire.I have pics somewhere Ill post. And check that GROUND wire connection that 99X1 pointed out!Make sure no wires are being pinched under any part of seat...IE when passenger is sitting on it!
