A '98 White Lighting. I assume if its factory white that it is the thunderstorm 101HP motor? Were all the lightings the same?
beside the 101 HP motor and forks/seat, what are any other differences. I figure the pegs may be higher, but what of the frame etc. THANKS,

PS: Is this a good Buell to own? Only very limited local riding, so comfort is not a big deal. Are the LIghtings more valuable than standard Buells?

There was a magazine article written by an occasional visitor to the site here published in a now out of print magazine that at one time proclaimed the S1 White Lightnings could become one of the more collectible of the Buells, or words to that effect.

Do a search on the site here for Buell and History and you should find links posted in the last several days taking you to several sites with various amounts of Buell history.

Note: apparently not all White Lightnings were white. But an S1 frame is an S1 frame if from the same year, unless I'm wrong, then it's something else.

I was going to add something here about collecting Buells, and include something about Harley posters, but decided not to as it's not relevant.

I could care less if my S1W (yes, it's white) is "collectable" or "more valuable" than my S3T. What I do care about is how many grins I get while riding both my Buells. It's rather ironic that I built the S1W to be a "once in a while" ride. Now I have to force myself to take the S3 once in awhile.

There are some other differences. For one, the fuel tank is bigger (the Manta tank) 5 gal. Also, I believe the header is of a larger diameter. The paint?

Personally I just love my S1,

As for it being rare, who cares it always makes me smile when I ride it.

Some of the '98 bikes were not the T-storm variety...doesn't seem to affect the grin factor much.

Just get one, you'll have a great time riding!

The stock S1s were not T-Stormed. I T-Stormed mine about a year after I owned it.

This year I want to go with some better internal bits to make the smile even bigger.

The White Lightning series came with black heads, also you can check the vin number, there is a number designation for that series, I forget what it is. The calimned 101hp motor is a blatent lie. My 1998 S1W, all black by the way, dynoed at 78hp and 75 foot lbs of torque. Some were higher, like in the 80's. The 101hp claim would be at the crank and would still be a lie. It is a nice bike thought. I put 31k miles on mine before I sold it. Something to watch for. The field wire hidden under the hot lead from the battery to the starter likes to break. If the bike should suddenly start to run poorly with the electrics gong haywire and then go dead, check this wire.
