You always hear about buyer beware, but let me tell you, people have awfully creative ways to rip off businesses. Here's an example.

Customer has bought something from us once before. Calls and orders a couple of cylinders.

Tells us that on the first order, we shipped to the wrong address, but he got it anyway. But please, make sure this time you ship to 121, not 129.

Fine sez we. We ship to 121.

Some time later, customer charges back on his credit card, claiming he never got it.

UPS says there's no 121 on that street. They delivered apparently to a nearby place and got a signature, slightly different name signed.

Credit card company says customer's address is 129. Sides with customer and charges us back.

Fortunately, UPS insurance will cover most of it. But we still lost money.

Someone always has a creative way to rip you off.

Guess we have to verify all addresses from now on.

And I'm guessing that person may have gotten a "free" set of cylinders, but it's the last time they'll ever be able to order anything from NRHS. So sucks to be them, in the long run.

Thats a damn sneaky trick. Sounds like a pro. Did you look to see if the first thing the person bought showed up on eBay?

Good reason to use the USPS. Nothing like a knock on the door from the local Postal Inspector to make a Federal case out of it...

Get shipping info in writing, or tape your phone calls for "quality assurance."

It sure pisses me off. Damn hard just to make ends meet in a small business already without this kind of crap. When I look at our total losses from fraud and theft, it makes my blood boil.

I just don't understand the mentality that let's people rationalize taking money or property from someone else. What, they think because it's a business, it's okay? There are people behind that business, often struggling to make ends meet, meet payroll, pay the bills, and hope for just a little left over. It's no different than putting a gun to a person's head and taking it.

I'm thinking about creating a "deadbeats" page on our web site and naming names. People who've written us hot checks, committed fraud, or flat stolen from us, including internally. I'm just about to that point.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Don't confuse petty criminals with the federal government.

Blake - Spoken like a true citizen of the Republic of Texas (my wife's home state.)

Aaron - A doughnut shop here in town placed bounced checks in the glass cabinet with the baked goods, right next to the cash register. A local supermarket kept a list of bad check writers on the cash register...theoretically for quick reference by their cashiers, but carefully positioned to be clearly legible by the customer.

Josh - I have heard the USPS is tenacious in mail fraud investigation, maybe a good idea.

Aaron - do you have their phone #? For fun you might want to run a Google search on it.

I would run a google search on EVERY phone number on mail orders. Just to make sure the # jives with the address. But what the hell do I know? : )

We don't get much fraud, trying to mail order a 5 ton plastic injection mold doesn't work real well : )

Aaron, a mate of mine had an outstanding account of the month award that was made up to look like a trophy, nicely engraved and all polished up,with all the names of people who owed him money from outstanding accounts,on display in his show room.
I also had a stop credit board in my workshop. It did not say that the people were bad payers just merely letting everybody who could see it that these people would not get further credit in my shop.

Here's an interesting observation about the deadbeat customers section on Airtech's website -- they made no effort to conceal the people's checking account information. I wonder what liabilities they could be exposed to if somebody were to access these accounts via identity theft because they did not blur out the bank routing and checking account numbers? I tried to send an email to Airtech, but the email link on their website doesn't work.

I did end up talking to a rep on the phone, and they don't seem to care. Kent, the owner says there probably isn't any money in the accounts anyway. Oh well, I like the idea, and didn't want them to get burned by it, but they don't seem too concerned...
